Kings 5, Canes 2

Tags: Canes Now

It's now 13 in a row.

The Carolina Hurricanes simply cannot win a game, even after rallying from a two-goal deficit to tie the score and seemingly wrestle away the game's momentum.

After Tuomo Ruut's second goal tied the L.A. Kings 2-2 in the third period Wednesday, the Kings got a power-play goal from Randy Jones and an even-strength goal from Wayne Simmonds to take control again.

Former Hurricanes forward Justin Williams finished off a 5-2 victory with an empty-netter. Williams also assisted on Jones' winning goal at 6:41 of the third, pushing the Canes' winless streak to 13 games.

Backup goaltender Erik Ersberg had 22 saves in posting his first victory since December 2008. Manny Legace made his first start for the Canes and had 26 saves.

Jarret Stoll's goal at 2:01 of the second pushed the Kings ahead 2-0. But the Canes rallied as Ruutu scored at 15:25 on a wicked shot from the right wing to make it 2-1.

Rod Brind'Amour assisted on Ruutu's goal, tying him with Kevin Dineen for second on the franchise career list with 294 assists.

Ruutu scored again at 4:03 of the third, off a Ray Whitney assist, to tie it 2-2. But the Canes' Scott Walker was called for roughing at 4:55 and Jones scored with 14 seconds left on the penalty.

The Canes had a chance at a shorthanded score on the Walker penalty, but Matt Cullen couldn't get enough stick on a Chad LaRose pass.

Stoll beat Aaron Ward out of the corner and to the front of the net and beat goalie Manny Legace for his fifth goal of the season after a shot from the point by Randy Jones.

Ryan Smyth's power-play goal gave the Kings a 1-0 lead at 3:31 of the first.

Smyth scored seven seconds after a boarding call against the Canes' Matt Cullen.

Manny Legace, in his first start, made a sparking glove save three minutes into the game on a Peter Harrold shot.

The Canes earned some cheers by killing off 1:50 of a Kings' 5-on-3 in the first after a tripping call against Bryan Rodney and delay of game against Joe Corvo. Stephane Yelle and Aaron Ward blocked shots and Legace made a pad save on a Smyth shot.

The Kings outshot the Canes 13-2 in the first period, but the Canes had an 11-7 edge in the second.

Nothing About The Stripes?

We're getting hooked and interfered with on the cycle — no call. Slashed and held in the slot — no call. Cross checked in the back and driven to the ice — no call. Scuderi loses his edge and Cullen gets called for boarding. Seven seconds later, Kings 1 Canes 0. LaRose is just about tackled working the puck along the half boards. A few seconds later, Walker lays a love tap on Doughty and gets called for roughing — Kings 3 Canes 2. Add to that the 0-13 run we're on and the fact that last season's least penalized team is this season's most penalized team, and it's only natural for a Caniac who's seen more than enough to start thinking conspiracy. Anyway, conspiracy theories aside, last night's refs — Messrs. Peel and LaRue — did indeed suck.

I did mention the LaRose

I did mention the LaRose play in particular. I had a close up view of that, and I was surprised no call was made. I didn't even see Walker's penalty. But it is rare that you can actually blame the refs for a loss. After the goal, it was only 3-2 with 13 minutes left in the game. The Canes had plenty of time to score another, but it looked like they handed in the towel yet again and just gave up. Blame goes to Canes, not the refs.

Peel has a history of officiating against the Canes. I knew how one-sided the officiating was going to be when I saw the referee's names up on the jumbotron.

One thing that I was going to mention originally, but decided against, was that I thought it was a smack in the face to the Canes fans when he called that penalty with 38 seconds left in the game. We had been booing at him all game, and he eventually made a call, but with barely enough time to even score one goal.

Losers always complain about refs

I'll agree with you there. Walker gets called for roughing then a few minutes later gets the same type of late hit laid on him, enough to injure him - no call.

The losing team's fans always complains about refs but... I have no shame in doing it here. I think you're allowed to complain when you've lost 13 straight.

My Point Exactly

When you're on an 0-13 roll and watching the season slip away, everything sucks.

Who is leading the players?

I was at the game last night. What is most dissappointing is the obvious lack of player leadership. The boys just looked like zombies out there for the first period. One time we only had 4 skaters on the ice when it was 5 on 5. Another time Sammy is in the offensive zone making moves and turns to pass it to the point, only to see the 2 D-men at the bench on a change. So we were skating 3 on 5 when we need goals. Roddy is a huge dissapointment right now. His quiet leadership style is not what we need right now. Someone in the locker room needs to step up and get the attention of their teammates. At least show some heart and fight through the frustration. Not seeing much of that right now.
Also, sit Rosie and Corvo and let them watch for a few games. Maybe that will get their attention.

At least Friday..

We get $1 hot dogs.

Unbelievable

I have been very quiet on this blog this year because, frankly, I can't find words to discribe what I have been seeing.  I am speechless.

So the facts and video do

So the facts and video do not lie...Sutter gets called up 2 weeks ago and has 3 goals and works his tail off. Boychuk gets called up and in 2 games has an assist and many scoring chances. Rodney gets called up and at least skates hard and is trying to compete every shift. So 3 young players all working harder and competing harder than all these overpaid vets like Brindy with his 20+ minutes of ice time and AWardo with his slow, brutal D and Corvo with his sissy play. So it's a fact that this team needs more youth and fire than the old farts that were supposed to lead this team, it's also a fact that bullet proof Maurice knows his job is safe and no matter the result JR and Karmanos love him and he is set for life. The end result is alot of losses, alot of horrible games and alot of disgruntled Canes fans that will just stop supporting the team. All and all a season to forget from every angle and the only hope is the lottery pick with some good young players joining this org for hope for the future.

Caniacs Won't Abandon The Canes

Caniacs are more than hockey fans. They know the game and they know, as inexplicable as it may be, that stuff like this happens. They don't stop supporting the team because they know the team needs their support now more than ever. This season may be in the tank, but the fun part will be watching the moves managment makes to dismantle what was supposed to be a top five team in the East and a lock for the playoffs. They'll be clearing space for call ups (case in point — Conboy on waivers, Boychuk on the team). They'll put players who will be UFAs at the end of the season on the block. Brind'Amour will pass the "C" onto Staal, then retire. If Mo keeps staring up at the Jumbotron with that "WTF Just Happened?" look in his eyes, he might not be as bullet proof as you think. What Bruce Boudreau is for the Caps, Tom Rowe could be for the Canes. Tell you what — instead of forgetting about the season, why don't you drag your big, bad, disgruntled self over to the RBC Center and get behind this team you profess to love.

Time for changes

I agree with most of what has been posted. The Canes just looked awful. They looked like a bunch of beer league players trying to bring the puck up ice. The Maple Leafs looked better when they were the worst team in the NHL. I have never seen a team of players whose confidence is so fragile. After all this is for the most part the same bunch that went to the Conference Finals last year, and a number of these players won a Cup! Slumps are one thing but it seems that most of these players forget so quickly what they can do and panic so fast. I guess that is why most of these players were available to a small market team like the Canes, because other teams figured them out and moved on. We have been lucky to see them when their confidence was high, and now it seems like the organization is waiting for dumb luck to ignite another round of hope for this franchise.
At this point I could count on one hand the forwards I would keep on this team if I could, and the other hand would definitely cover the blueliners.
This organization needs a change. And it needs to start from the top down. If you look at http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=CAR&season=0910 most of the players contracts expire within the next two seasons. It is time to bring in a new GM so he can start to re-shape this team. Rutherford has made some good moves, but for the most part his choices have been streaky players who lack size. Bring in a new GM, let him decide on any coaching changes, and lets rebuild.

Two comments

Last I heard a big part of the coaches responsibilities are: preparation, inspiration and motivation. I don't see any of those...

If every man on this team played as well as he did last season (for whichever team) we'd be making a run for the Cup!

Last nights game

I was at the game and from what I saw this team is in complete dissarray, offensively, defensively, mentally...how anyone can continue to say the Coach has nothing to do with that result is illogical. If that is true then exactly what is the Coach's responsibility? This team looks completely lost most of the time, like they have no clue what they are supposed to be doing while on the Ice.

I am as surprised as anyone at how bad this team is playing this fast under Maurice..but facts are facts. Look at his career record, look at how the team is performing and tell me how he can remain blameless? This is a dissaster, JR needs to admit he made a mistake and take action to get this Team headed in a new direction...it is time for the Mo era to end.....for good this time!!! Before permanent damage is done to this Franchise, Fans have suffered through this before with the same Coach, asking them to do the same again is too much to ask!

Veterans Day

I was hoping the Canes would celebrate Veterans Day by giving some of their veterans the night off, but no such luck.

The Canes skated well for 30 minutes or so. That's not enough. There's no excuse for that first period. I've never seen momentum swing so drastically every game like it does with the Canes. It's more than inconsistency and more than what you see in a normal hockey game. You go to get a drink and come back wondering if it's the same game. Perhaps it's confidence. Perhaps they're just not pissed off enough at the fact that they suck. (Yeah, harsh, I know, but the results speak for themselves. *Right now* they suck. Maybe later in the season they won't.)

I wonder what it is about the young guys that we as fans don't see. I think every call up has done well. I'd be happy to see Rodney, Sutter, and Boychuk in the lineup with some high-priced vets sipping water in the second level. Yet, it took the GM stepping in to get Sutter top-9 minutes, Boychuk is in the 'A', and I'm guessing the same fate for Rodney.

I'm starting to wonder about the team's preparation and system. The Canes looked out of position and outmanned so often last night that I found myself counting Kings skaters. Maybe it's neither preparation nor system and the Canes are just that slow.

Here's hoping Friday the 13th is the good luck charm this team needs.

Crazy bad

I know I am no hockey expert but even I can see that Brind'Amour is so slow it is embarrassing. At times he looked like he had no clue what to do with the puck. Watching the game all you can do is wonder why he is being given so much ice time....20:36mins....crazy. I will always remember the Stanley Cup run and how he led this team. That is what makes it even more painful to watch. Please hang up the skates Rod.

It is incredulous to me that we have speed in Boychuk and we send him back down to the AHL. Rodney also was pretty good and needs to stay. Sit Wallin, too slow and looks completely lost. Sit Ward, too many missed assignments. The defense looks completely lost as to positioning.

Well

What i saw on TV ( after the tech. Difficulties were fixed) was this:

1. the kings out skated the canes
2. the kings out fore checked and made better passes
3. Kept the puck in the canes zone more
4.While the likes of Rosie( who was still working his booty off)Sutter,Jokinen,Samsonov,Whitney, and Cole tried to keep the puck at or near the net, it was the canes lack of consistency that did them in yet again. heck even Rodney had a shot on goal i think.
5.Manny over played the puck 3 times...and when that PK goal showed up, Manny wasn't squared up and Jussie couldn't handle the guy who had a all but wide open net to score...and who ever made the decision to pull the goalie with 2 mins to go...needs to pay a 10,000.00 fine...each time the Bench as does that the other team got a goal each time...and to me that adds to the " humiliation" of the loss...and that Penalty to Walker while a close call...I saw it as a good call, a stupid thing to do at the wrong freaking time, but a good call...sigh...

Now if the canes can & will correct 3 of the 5...maybe they Can & Will WIN ONE !!!

Go???? Canes

No ticket?

I didn't see you there in attendance supporting your team. Yesterday, you said, "let's fill the seats."

hnic66

trust me...if i could have been there i would have,as there are some situations that do physically prevent me from wanting to be able there. i even had tickets to the games that were played on oct. 6th,(Tampa Bay) & the 28th ( St. Louis) but life & such got in the way...i ended up eating them both times, but it 's all good...just how masny did show up lasy night ?

Back from the L.A. Kings Game

The same players are making the same mistakes over and over and their errors drag down the entire team. Other than the square-wheeled players, I very much enjoyed watching the Hurricanes players who obviously care and were giving 150%. Ruutu was excellent and especially because I am convinced he is having to overcome injuries while working so hard. Sutter was battling all over the ice; and again showed tremendous talent, grit, and hockey intelligence. Rodney was the most confident defenseman for the Hurricanes. He made tape to tape passes all game long. Cullen, too, was fighting hard. Kostopoulos had some gritty play and was working the front of the net. Brind'Amour is getting worse and worse. He is knocked off the puck as easily as a paper doll and has zero acceleration. Wallin is staking with concrete skates. LaRose is totally unproductive;and at this point is mishandling the puck repeatedly. I still am mystified why Aaron Ward is so bad this year in coverage. I don't know if he is hurt or what the problem is, but he seems out of position frequently. I have mixed reactions to Legace, but all in all, he was as good as could be expected. The radio commentators were singing his praises, but I didn't have that positive a reaction. Like everybody in the RBC tonight when Ruutu's second goal went in, I thought this game was the one to end the losing streak. Then Walker took the roughing penalty and the penalty kill failed. At that point, the momentum vanished. One thing is clear, the Hurricanes need more speed and need desperately to sit down the unproductive players. The power play is still without even a semblance of organization. It seems inevitable that there will be some trades soon and that Boychuk will be brought back to the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes defense let the Kings camp out in front of the net so long that I am surprised the Kings didn't have to pay rent to the RBC. Teams now know all they have to do is crash the net and look for rebounds and the Hurricanes defense will back down or misplay a puck. The sad thing is that the Hurricanes have more than ample talent to be a playoff team if two or three of the non-producing players are replaced. Another bright spot was the RBC crowd was enthusiastic and particularly after the first Ruutu goal. As disappointed as I am in the year thus far, I think this season will be an exciting year to watch the transition toward next year's team. I believe within the next two weeks, there will be some trades and some of the talented players from Albany will be on the ice. I really don't see the playoffs in this team's future for the 2009-2010 season (as much as I hope I am proven wrong); but I do see this season as one for adding speed and size and enthusiasm as a foundation is laid for the Hurricanes team of the future. Speaking only for myself that process cannot begin soon enough.

You're right again Abramsdoug

Everyone, everyone to a person sitting near me saw what management is apparently not seeing. Can't tell you how many times fans were railing on our "Defense" and the haphazard way it just throws the puck around the ice with no apparent purpose. Can't believe these guys were ever given a legitimate contract...and Wallin a "no trade." Unbelievable.

Each team we play seems to  try to set something up with its passing game, but the Hurricanes "Defense" just continues to dump and chase. The Kings set their game up with crisp, purposeful passing, but our teams just steps on the iceand sends it end-to-end and the other team usually gains control.

It is not so much the losing as it is how we lose. Right now the team isn't playing to win. I actually cringe every time Tim Gleason takes the ice. Notice how often he stands behind the net waiting for something to happen instead of being proacricve and trying to make something happen. One man said "I'm not a player, can hardly  skate and even I can get out there and hit the puck as hard as "H" and skate a shift and take a seat."

I know we still have to support our team, but it gets harder when those 4 "defensemen" play....maybe that's it, they're playing andnot out there working at winning.

Why is Gleason, Wallin, Aaron Ward and Alberts out there??????? And you're right about Rod Brind'Amour. The poor guy skates like the Book of Job reads.

I wish I had better control over my emotions when it comes to our "Defense". I will continue to root for our team, but let's trade for players who know how to pass, who will take up positions in front of our defensive net, and look for opportunities ion front of the opposition net.

MY wife says I must remain hopeful and positive.

OK, so we get the first round draft pick next year...No. 1 pick!

Tim Gleason

Tim has been our best defenseman.  When he screws up (and EVERYBODY on this team has), he usually redeems himself (unlike most of the team).  The reason you see him waiting behind the goal is that he is waiting for some of our players to move their slow butts onto the ice so he can make a play.  It seems that everyone has taken advice from Eric Staal's playbook and decided to skate as slow as humanly possible to get back onside or get onto the ice.

When Dose He Not Screw Up?

I certainly honor and respect your opinion about Tim Gleason, but we surely see him from different viewpoints.  I like the guy personally, but as a hockey player he, in my opinion, is less  than woefully inadequate. And what in the blue-eyed world does he do to "redeem himself" as you suggest? He has no career statistics to speak of!

Even if he was our best "defenseman" that wouldn't be terribly complementary of any skills he might have.

And as for being slow, I'll agree with you on that. So why should we expect anything different? Brind'Amour is about 39, Aaron Ward 36, Yelle 37...(ages approximate),  and Walker is up there as is Wallin. Tim has no such excuse.

You and me probably should be putting our collective energies into finding good things about the team, but just now that's difficult. I do support the Hurricanes; you know, my team win, my team lose....my team...but I regard Tim Gleason as one of our  weaker players, age notwithstanding!

Timmy G

OK...how about he is one of only 2 players (Scott Walker being the other) who are not in the minus column for +/-.  That should say something right there.  He must be doing something right since he's not getting scored on like the rest of the team.

From my view up close to

From my view up close to the ice, it is really noticeable who is playing hard and who isn't. Kostopoulus, Ruutu, Cullen, Sutter, Rodney, and Cole all showed heart. They fought for the puck, skated hard, etc. Kudos to them. You also see who isn't playing hard and who needs to sit down on the bench for 55 of the 60 minutes. Brind'Amour is just too slow. I remember near the end of the game on an off side, Jussi was taking the puck in (skating in a straight line, not dancing like Samsonov), and Brind'Amour went up to the blue line and just started drifting. It looked like he had a mental lapse - he was about 5-10 feet over the line by the time Jussi got there. Time to hang them up, Rod. I could tell that Whitney is still hurt. Corvo was taking shots tonight - but missing the net. I personally think Legace played well with the defense he had. He overplays the puck behind the net though.

Send down Brindy, bring up Boychuk, keep Rodney up.

View from Up Close

I agree with Procellae,  it is very noticeable which players are giving it everything they have and which ones are not.  I agree with his assessment that Ruutu, Cullen, Sutter, Rodney, and Cole were skating hard.  I would add Jokinen as working hard and making good decisions, with one lapse.  I realize opinons differ on Samsonov and I think he is trying hard to get things going for the team.  I strongly agree that Brind'Amour is just too slow.  Whitney did seem to be trying to play through his injury.  Boychuk needs to come up and Rodney needs to stay.

Veiw from the 3rd Bowl

The only thing I disagree with most of you is that I still think Rosie is showing heart and hussle. I think after Yelle went down last you rarely saw the same line twice last night. One thing from the start was effident, we were more than a step behind the Kings. I will always admire Brindy for what he has brought this area, but it's time.

Heart and hustle???

More like running around helter-skelter, with no effectiveness at all.

This

LaRose may be skating hard, but he is ineffective. Most of his checks were after the puck was gone, and he is not big enough to force the large defensemen to make turnovers. He is not scoring goals (i.e. partial 2 on 1 with Brindy, he had the chance to shoot, but he passed it to Brindy. However, the puck was behind Brindy to the three trailing Kings.).

I'm wondering

When will people start wearing the bags to the games? Anyway, was at the game tonight. I'm glad for Rutuu, imbaressed for Roddie, Love Sutter and I feel for Rosie. To me the bottom line is we are just slower the Kings. Actually most teams out there. We'll see what Friday brings.

Forget the Bag

They'll just stop coming.

Good luck with that return on your investment, PK.

i remember

when the NO saints NFL team were so bad the fans who wore bags called the team the New Orleans "AINTS" . now if the canes are no Longer powrful Like a hurricane...what are they...a light breeze ? a puff of wind ? Not being ugly mind you ...but the way the team is playing Hurricane's they AINT...but like others here and even i said we must be faithful and hold the course & have hope...but like many of you who do get to go and watch what is going on...i'm sure it is hard...

Stay warm & be safe...

Go Canes !! PLEASE !!!!

I was about to copy paste my comment from last game.

Well, at times you can see it. This team has the potential to be a good team. The second period and first quarter of the third period was very good. When Ruutu scored his second, I think everyone in the arena was thinking, "That should provide the spark! Now they will keep pushing." But then good old Tim Peel continued his hatred against the Canes. LaRose was hooked going into the zone (being in the corner section, I had a perfect view of the 5+ seconds the stick was horizontal), everyone in the lower bowl started yelling about the missed call, and suddenly we get a call against us. Then we got scored on. And now I will bring up what I say every game: they lost their confidence. They saw the score was 3-2 after they worked hard to tie it, and they just stopped. The issue is in the head. Something needs to happen to this team by the hands of JR, whatever it is.

On Monday night I purchased

On Monday night I purchased a new car.... Last night I wrecked the new car....

All that pales in comparison to the friggin' hockey game tonight.... @#$%&!

Gee Santo Mateo

That's rough...but i can go one better...how about you buy the car and drive it off the lot and as you go to turn say right to get on the street...a garbage truck t-bones ya...and totals the car...And yes i would sadly agree with you about tonoights game too...glad your ok...OBTW...that situation i just discribed...happened to my eldest daughter...3 years ago...and the car had 2 miles on the odometer...sigh...isn't life grand ??

Be safe !!! Go Canes ???

Go for it!!!!

come on guys...let's at least the record of most games ever lost! Heck, as long as we're going to be the worst, let's go all out and break that record! So close that we can taste it....UGH!
What a debacle this year. Who the heck could have ever seen this coming. The team looks slow and just out of sync. I think it's time to start trading guys that will bring us some high draft picks for the next draft. Between that and some call ups form Albany, the team can retool for next year.
Can you fellow fans believe that we are talking about "wait till next year" and it's only November 11th???? What a nightmare!

We Lost Again?

No way.

Keep Rodney here.  He was awesome.

Rutuu.  Glad you could join us.

Mo.  Bye.  Oh...nevermind.
