Karmanos not worried, not panicking

Bookmark and Share

Watching the Hurricanes practice today was the man most concerned about the direction of the season -- owner Peter Karmanos Jr.

Karmanos said he was in town on business, not to drop by for a few words with the players or try to boost their morale. Like most in the organization, Karmanos said he did not have a clear answer for what's ailing this team or why it can't shake a winless streak that now has reached 12 games.

"I've never come close to having a losing streak like that," he said. "And this is a very good hockey team. I haven't given up on it. We have a great coaching staff.

"We just need to hang on tight because we're just as capable of winning 12 in a row, or more capable of winning 12 in a row as losing 12 in a row. Or, excuse me, a 12-game winless streak, which is different.

"We have an excellent hockey team. I'm not worried. I'm not panicked."

His thoughts on what's gone wrong in the 2-11-3 start?

"If I knew what it was, we could fix it," he said. "They're a team that won two very tough 7-game playoff series and then lost four straight to a team that I don't think was as good as the two teams we beat."

That would be the Pittsburgh Penguins, who swept the Canes in the Eastern Conference finals and then won the Stanley Cup.

"Something happened. I don't think anybody could really figure out why we lost to Pittsburgh," he said. "After the first game in Pittsburgh, I told Jimmy (Rutherford) that I thought we were better than they were and I felt better about that series than I did about the first two.

"The Boston team we beat was one heck of a good hockey team. New Jersey was really tough. So something happened, I don't know what it was, but it seems to have continued on through this season."

Could it be that the team's overall age is showing? The Canes are the oldest team in the league in terms of average age. Did the two rugged 7-game series take too much out of too many players, with a carryover effect this season?

"No, absolutely not," Karmanos said. "Pittsburgh has some veterans and they aren't suffering from their playoff run.

"Our key players are young. We're going to have to figure it out, but it's an interesting dynamic right now. We need support from the fans because I think the guys are working hard, I think they're talented. I think anything that could go wrong, has gone wrong."

Most would agree with that. The Canes have lost Erik Cole, Eric Staal and now Cam Ward to injuries.

There's also the matter of not scoring goals. That has been a season-long malady.

But Karmanos, again looking back to the Penguins playoff series, said the Canes, after a hot surge late in the season and in the playoffs, suddenly fell into the habit of finding ways to lose games rather than winning them. It's a nasty habit they have not shaken, he said.

"I think once it breaks, we'll see the team that went to the conference finals and the final four last season," he said.

Rutherford is attending the NHL's general managers meeting this week, but Karmanos said not to expect any trade or major transaction being conducted at the meetings. He still believes in the Canes' core group.

"We've got an excellent hockey team," he said. "Our defense is better than it was last year, I believe. We've got one of the best goaltenders in the league. Eric Staal is as good a young star as there is in the league, as far as I'm concerned. We've got balance on all our lines.

"It's not a matter of players. We just have to figure out what's going on. I don't know that it's a mental thing. I don't know what it is."

Not worried and not panicking

It's practically impossible for us to make the playoffs.

it's a new year guy's

personally i think they thought that opponents would just roll over easy this season because of how we played last season

but this is a new year guy's , somebody on this team has got to flip that switch and take control. I place my bet on scott walker.

GO Canes!!!

Think You're Right abramsdoug!

The teams needs the support of everyone. All of the observations, advice, grumbling, being put forth should carry a positive tone. As past New York Gov. Cuomo once observed about a former president, "why wouldn't you support the President, he's the only President we have." This is our hockey team, the only one we have. Make the rafters shake Wednesday and be darn glad we have this team in Raleigh. Much is being said about who should start Wednesday, Leighton or Legace. Difficult decision, but can we run the risk of having the backup goalie be the backup goalie to a backup goalie? Leighton must be down enough. Maybe a few starts would be a confidence builder for him. He's sat on the bench w/o complaining so what to do? Hard to coach, easy to criticize. Though I do believe he deserves a start Wednesday, I'd be hard pressed to say what I'd do if I were coaching. But whomever is in the net, he's my goalie and I'm for him....and the team. We gotta be positive... look up...otherwise the only ones looking up would be proctologists!!!! And I do like your positive thought process abramsdoug. Go get 'em guys!

You have got to be kidding

Quoting  Cuomo for motivation?

Hmm... let me get this right, the American people should have supported Johnson and his Vietnam war, cause he is our only president? Nah, they ran him out of town.

This oozes the typical Candy Cane sentiment...boom...boom...ra ra go team, despite being  in the basement. Uggh how much of this fluff from Abrams and his Cane website admin can you'all take.

Blah

Spoken like a true Democrat.

As a

"Independent"...do i really care what either party really does ? Nope...I'm more concerned about How the canes are doing !!

 Go Canes !!

Amen !!

despite a crappy economy...let's do our best to fill the seats and rock the house !!!
Glad to see that the owner is as concerned as we fans are and not running around like chicken little...even though it is rather tempting...hehehe

Go Canes !!

Petey K, either put down the

Petey K, either put down the crack pipe or loosen off that rubber band on your grey ponytail because you are the owner of the Titanic better known as the sinking ship Hurricane and it has almost reached the ocean's bottom. "Our defense is better than last year"??? Come on. "Weve got balance on all four lines"??? Your great coach does not even play all four lines! "We are capable of winning 12 in a row"...yeah right, when the moon turns blue and when pigs fly! "We have a great coaching staff"...yeah look at MO's win-loss record in the NHL...it's about .433% what a great coach!!!!

This bunch is going nowhere fast and the only light at the end of the tunnel for Canes fans this season is that lottery pick for first overall next summer.

Canes

I think all the fans need to stay behind this team. 5 of our next 6 are at home and all of them are winnable games: Islanders, TML, Wild, Kings, and Tampa. Plus a road game against Montreal where we normally play well. Time for everybody to have a positive attitude and let's play some hockey. I'm ready to get wild on Wednesday.

Go Canes!

The only change I'd like to see is getting Dennis Seidenberg back! Besides that, I've been having a really good time watching the games on TV even though we've been losing them all. And I'll be at the game on Friday! Go Canes!

Glad PK Said That About the Pens

That is exactly what I said last season: "Come on guys you just beat two better teams"...

I wonder if mentally they are just not into it...it showed up against Pens, they got down about it after losing 4 straight, got upbeat about the new team, then the Philly shut-out/Boston spanking just killed their attitude.....of course, injuries don't help.

I still go back to this being on the shoulders of Mo. That was a good time out he took last game...but what are you saying during that timeout? How about "how dare they score on us...go out there and get two to make up for it..." Only he and the team knows, but he has to do something to get their confidence going. Take some chances/risks here-and-there...you don't have to stick to the same game plan EVERY game...especially when we are LOSING.

Good Luck to Manny!

Fan Support and Peter Karmanos

I for one appreciate the fact Peter Karmanos gave a show of support to the team and asked for fan support. Although I have some definite ideas (which may well be totally off-base and uninformed) about a couple of changes I'd like to see, I am excited about the core team and am particularly excited about the long-term strength of the team given its present talent and the talent in Albany. It's been a rough start for everybody, but we all need to hang together (players, coaches, owners, management, and fans) and work through the tough patch. I hope the RBC will be rocking this week.

prices

I think if they didn't charge $10 to park and cut the ticket prices in half or 1/3 then the place would sell out every night. Our guys would know we support them. The reason we're losing is mental. We're in a rut. A few sell outs or all sell outs would make a difference. $10 to park? 200-300k per game to park? $8-$9 beer? Not showing 15-20 games this year? Not good at public relations. With my 3 m old and 20 m old and a tight budget, I don't get to go much. The prices are frustrating. Our team should be awesome. Our heads are wrong. It starts at the top. Show the fans the team supports us in a time of need and I bet the fans will return the gesture.

cheap

Actually compared to other professional sports or either other NHL teams, going to see the Canes is pretty cheap. They have some of the cheapest tickets out there.

who cares

what other places charge. This is Raleigh. Not the north east. Not the north. Not the northwest. Not the west. so on so on. High prices will not be accepted here. remember the ticket re-sell deal and jail?. Raleigh is being slammed with people who try to over price everything. If the prices were fair. The place would be slammed. Even when we're winning it's not sold out. Every game would sell out if they quit tryng to gank us. When the place constantly sells out. Start raising the prices..a little. But $10 to park? And they pay money to not allow parking in near by areas and are considering including a parking price to every ticket??? of $10??? I loved em while they were here.....
