Kaberle clears waivers

Defenseman Frantisek Kaberle has cleared waivers and will remain with the Hurricanes.

"It's part of the business," Kaberle said after today's practice. "It happens.

"After the (foot) injury, I haven't played much. With one more year (remaining on his contract), probably nobody I know is going to take me."

The Hurricanes placed Kaberle, who has a $2.2 million salary, on waivers Monday. NHL teams had until noon today to claim him but there were no takers.

A broken bone in his right foot suffered against Oct. 28 against the Los Angeles Kings first sidelined Kaberle for 24 games. He returned, then had to sit out five more games because of recurring problems with the foot.

"Before the injury happened I felt great and I think I played good," Kaberle said. "It's bad luck."

Defenseman Niclas Wallin appeared to reaggravate an ankle injury that has kept him out of the lineup today and left the team practice at the RecZone. That makes Kaberle's availability more reassuring for Canes coach Paul Maurice.

A little relief that Kaberle cleared waivers?

"Yes sir," Maurice said with a smile.

Maurice did not think Wallin reinjured the ankle, just suffered a "tweak," saying defenseman Tim Gleason went through mcuh the same in battling soreness after his high ankle sprain.

Of dealing with Kaberle after putting him on waivers, Maurice said: "It's not such a new situation. This happens fairly regularly around (the league). For some players ... it turns out to be some kind of turning point in their career.

"When Frankie came to camp, from my understanding, he really worked hard, he really looked focused and he really looked good. And he had the injury and he hasn't gotten back where he was. Then we got healthy and we saw some younger defensemen.

"With that being said, he may never miss a game. ... He's probably not overly happy about it but he's handled it well."

Funny, no one mentions that Gleason is out on a regular basis-has been since he first got here. He does not have the physical presence he's given credit for. He may throw a few punches, but that doesn't accomplish much when he is often the only guy called for a penalty. They threw too much money at Kaberle right after we won the Cup and then he showed up injured and did little the next season. They should have not gotten so carried away-kinda of like the Bret Hedican deals after 2002 playoffs.

Wallin and some Hypocrite fan commentators

Give me a break!  Preseason this blog was dumping all over Wallin. Then he had a great start and on came the "Wallin For All Star" campaign.

Now his ankle is hurt making a good defensive play and some are back on his case. Learn the game or pllllease stop commenting!! Nick is a legit. #3 or 4 D on this team and carries a big part of the physical load.

Thank You

Wallin

Wallin plays pretty well...when healthy. Unfortunately, Wallin isn't healthy all that often.

Hey Canenut

While i don't have anything against the guy...but like you...I'm Not Surpised...either...

About time...

Wallin has a no-trade clause and is a good player. He has already used it once and I feel that he would use it again. Plus, what team would want a player that can't skate right away. Frank played pretty much terrible last year and I was thinking he would get traded in the off season. We have a lot of great young defensemen in the system that could be used.

Why not Waive Wallin?

Seems the Canes are waiving the wrong guy. Since Wallin has been out, the Canes have shown improvement. They aren't great but should at least be at average until Wallin returns, then back to dismal. What's Wallin got that JR likes?

I agree but...

Wallin is currently injured, at last as of last game.  And Wallin and Karberle both are contracts I think the team can afford to move if able, I think Wallins stay-at-home size makes him more valuable.  Kaberle is considered smaller, and more of an offensive d-man, which we have several of.

Not surprised
