Rookie John Tavares, the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, finishes off a 4-3 shootout win with a goal to give the Isles their first win of the season.
Jeff Tambellini scores for the Isles to begin the shootout, and Frans Nielsen does the same. Jussi Jokinen scores for the Hurricanes, but Tavares ends it for NY.

The Canes and Islanders are going to a shootout.
Eric Staal and Jussi Jokinen scored in a span of 1:02 late in the third to give the Canes a 3-3 tie with the Isles and force overtime.
The Islanders scored twice in a 49-second span of the second period for a 3-1 lead.
After Matt Cullen's power-play goal at 5:34 of the second tied the score 1-1 for the Canes, Tim Jackman and then Andy Sutton scored for the Isles. Jackman banged in a shot in close at 10:32 and then Sutton redirected a shot by Jack Hillen at 11:21.
Cullen scored on a shot from the goal line extended that appeared to hit defenseman Brendan Witt in front of goalie Dwayne Roloson. It came after Sergei Samsonov and Rod Brind'Amour had good scoring chances in a power play that had Eric Staal and Joe Corvo on the points.
The Islanders led 1-0 after the first period on a Matt Moulson goal and outshot Carolina 13-8. Moulson scored from his knees in the slot at 8:11 for his fifth goal of the season on an Andy Sutton assist.
The Canes' Ray Whitney, playing his 1,000th game, nearly tied the score with 4:20 left in the first but hit the post with a hard shot.
The Canes' Scott Walker did win a slugfest with bruising Brendan Witt with 7:30 left in the period.
Tuomo Ruutu had a rough first period for the Canes. Ruutu was leveled by Nate Thompson early in the game and then by Sutton in the final minutes of the period, but popped up each time. ...
A lot of empty seats at Nassau Coliseum tonight and the Yankees aren't playing. ...

Thu, 10/22/2009 - 10:30 — dustinlammersThe first period was a nightmare to watch, being outworked for almost every puck, lazy effort, missed checks, bad passes, etc. The boys seem to gain a little jump in their step in the second, but that was dampened when the Isles got two pretty fortunate goals. The tip was nice but how often does Andy Sutton really make that play?
It was good to see a fire late in the game down our top defensive d-man but it was too little too late. We can't play 50 poor minutes and 10 good ones and expect to win on most nights. There needs to be more effort from start to finish.
Something I made sure to watch last night was the amount of shots taken on the PP and it was minimal. Guys are still trying to be too cute with their passing, get traffic and take shots. It works.
I'm starting to wonder if the lack of full team practices are making for some of the sloppy play. Lots of time guys were making passes to no one and looking lost. I'm wondering if this is still a gelling thing with everyone.
Let's hope they iron it out on Friday/Saturday - win both and we're 4-4-2 and okay. Just need to get some positive momentum in the season and then we'll be rolling.
High SOG
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 09:26 — WAStoutHigh SOG does no good when 95% are from 2 feet past the blue line and you shoot into grandpa goalie's logo...
Centering passes are worthless when nobody's home...
When our offensive playbook consists of two plays - we're in trouble:
1. Skate down left or right wall, get hit...lose puck or take worthless shot with no rebound.
2. Dump and chase and lose it.
Instigator penalty?
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 08:29 — wxray1Just checking. A lot of people here defended the refs for the 2 min instigator and 10 minute misconduct after a Cane (can't remember who) retaliated on a marginal hit on Whitney in the first game.
Same thing happened last night, but Tavaras was on the other side of the marginal hit. I only see a 2 minute roughing, no instigator or 10 min misconduct.
Why?
There are three main
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 18:16 — procellaeThere are three main differences between the instigator in the first game and the one in this game.
First, the hit in this game was clean (barely). The referee did not call a penalty on the play. On the other hand, the hit in the Philly game was dirty, and the referee was going to call the penalty. If a player starts a fight after a clean hit (the referee's opinion of a clean hit, that is), an instigator penalty should be called.
That brings me to my second point. The key phrase is "if a player starts a fight". There wasn't a fight after this hit. Alberts layed down on the ice and the linesmen stepped in immediately. Therefore, he attempted to start a fight, but he didn't actually start one, which is why an unsportmanlike was called and not an instigator (nothing was instigated). If Alberts had fought, the Islander player would have gotten the full 17 minutes.
And third, this was actually the right call, unlike the first game ;).
Need some new energy
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 07:41 — rmmeliThey need to bring someone up from Albany to try and provide a spark. Apart from Pitkanen (who was outstanding) the rest of the team look like they have lead in their skates. Four forward lines of mediocrity.

Thu, 10/22/2009 - 05:02 — esteban1949one of these days the Canes will get and stay hot on a consistant basis...The Canes could have won this and NOT have it go into OT, let alone the SO, but i am or would be surprised if players like Samsonov, Kpstopolis, and LaRose don't get a wee bit fustrated, as they kept shoting at the goal, but nothing was going in. And ssadly the canes didn't keep someon on the net for rebounds alot either...alot of booming shots from near the "line" though...I think a better game than with NJ.
Go Canes !!! Please !!!
