RALEIGH — Eric Staal notched his fourth hat trick of the season, a new franchise record, and had an assist as the Carolina Hurricanes streaked past the shell-shocked New York Islanders 9-0 Tuesday at the RBC Center.

Tuomo Ruutu had a pair of goals, and Dwight Helminen, Scott Walker, Rod Brind'Amour, and Frantisek Kaberle also scored for the Canes, who led 3-0 after the first period and 6-0 after two.

Goaltender Cam Ward, making his 27th straight start for the Canes, earned his 39th win, topping the franchise record set by Martin Gerber in 2006. His sixth shutout of the season tied the team record held by Arturs Irbe and Kevin Weekes.

Canes coach Paul Maurice said Tuesday morning that it would understandable to have a letdown after securing a playoff berth Saturday. Instead the Canes looked like a team intent on securing a top-four finish in the Eastern Conference and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

"We played well," Maurice said. "They've got some injuries and sickness. They've been fighting as hard as they can for a long time and ... they just kind of broke tonight.

"But we came out and we skated very, very well. Our forwards did exactly what we hoped they would do — they hunted the puck down and we didn't give a whole lot. We were very sharp and clearly they weren't."

Carolina won its ninth straight game, tying the franchise record set in 2006, and stretched its record winning streak at the RBC Center to 12 games.

"We're playing like a well-oiled machine, I would say," Staal said.

Staal scored a first-period goal, then added two in the second after taking a stick in the mouth on the opening faceoff of the period. It's the eighth hat trick of his career and he has 39 goals this season.

"It was one of those nights where we're a team that's rolling and playing well and they're a team that's playing (the season) out," said Staal. "It's just one of those nights."

Helminen's goal at 2:54 of the first came on a tip of a Dennis Seidenberg shot — the goal originally was scored to Seidenberg — after Staal and Ray Whitney each missed on good scoring opportunities in the first minute of play.

Seidenberg took a shot from just inside the blue line with Helminen and Tim Conboy providing traffic in the slot in front of goaltender Yann Danis. Helminen got a piece of the puck for his second goal.

Staal scored his 37th at 9:07 with a wrister from the left circle after a nifty lead pass from Erik Cole, who had four assists.

Walker then scored with 38.2 seconds left in the period to make it 3-0. Walker's shot glanced off Isles defenseman Thomas Pock, off the boards behind the goal and then back to the forward, who popped in the puck for his fifth goal.

Staal took a stick in the mouth from Richard Park to begin the second period. The Canes didn't score on the double-minor with Joey MacDonald replacing Danis in goal, but Staal scored on a rush at 5:12 of the second after beating defenseman Jack Hillen.

Brind'Amour scored a power-play goal to make it 5-0 on a no-look pass from Jussi Jokinen. It was Brind'Amour's 16th goal, and Seidenberg picked up his second assist of the game.

Staal had hats flying on the ice with 3:09 left in the second after a setup pass from Cole, who had four assists.

Chat with Chip ?

hmmm...boy is that going to be good !! Or i hope it will be...have fun yall... Go Canes !!

Leighton didn't have the night off.....

Michael Leighton got more work opening the door to the bench than Ward got in goal!!! Great game!

It was a good game !!

I felt bad for LaRose as he tried to get # 20 but it was not to be this time, but there is thursday huh ??? And speaking of goals..How about #5...Mr. K got his first Goal tonite ! The team stayed focused, and even though Conboy had to mix it up due to a "slight' misunderstanding...of a former teamates well wishes for his new son gunner...it was a well played and disciplined game.

Go Canes !!

Cane Snow

Just in time for the playoffs, our blog got a snazzy new logo. On a black & white monitor, it looks as much like it says "CANE SNOW" as "CANES NOW". Weird.

Anyway, I hope we score 10 against the Sabres.

Awesome game. Chip wasn't

Awesome game. Chip wasn't there supposed to be an online chat session today at 1 with you and Luke?

On to the game...what can I say, the Islanders are going to be playing golf next weekend so we can't blame them for turning it in. I think the islanders played well enough to make it interesting for the fans. Canes kept to the usual to try and secure home ice advantage (who can blame them). Great game all around.

Chip chat on Wednesday

Hey, you're right. We had to move Chip back a day. His chat will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Thanks!

Its not running up the score....

Look i could see it lookin bad if it was in the islanders building...but the canes were in their building and they were  and still are doing everything they can do to get into 4th to get home ice advantage.... to me this is alexander ovechkin and the 50th goal thing all over again....yes i'm sure for the islanders it wasnt their proudest moment of the season but unless they have completely checked themselves out of the season they know the canes are battling for the best possible spot in the playoffs.... i dont AT ALL look at it as running up the score...the canes needed to win the game....whether the score was 1-0 or 9-0...the islanders are big boys i'm sure they understand even if some of their fans dont.... Now lets move on and focus on thursday and BUFFALO....shall we?.....LOL

It was totally running up the score...

....and rightfully so. Maurice even said as much in his post-game-he purposely kept putting out the big guys because the Islanders kept taking cheap shots. It was, and I quote, "...our only recourse." And I LOVE IT!!!

after clinching saturday

after clinching saturday night... exhale...  ;)

Each game it seems

there is a different element of this team on display. Against the Rangers it was team toughness. Against Pittsburgh it was determination. Tonight it was discipline. This game could've turned real ugly, real fast. But the Canes kept thier focus on the team and didn't get goaded into any crap and got their retribution on the scoreboard.

I don't care that it was against the lowly Islanders. Much like Cole's first game back against Calgary, it didn't matter WHO was at the other end of the ice. This was a game that could have easily gone the way of the Islanders. But there was as much urgency in the Canes play as if it were the Cup finals. They sent a message to rest of the NHL: the Carolina Hurricanes accept all comers. After seeing this game tonight I could care less about home ice. I really don't think it matters at  this point, to this team. They are robotic. They believe they can win any game they play.

Great effort on the part of the entire team. And Paul Maurice puts the "Mo" in "motivation."

Another lame rip-and-post

Another lame rip-and-post from the pocket-poor N&O.

EXACTLY...

Who cares?

Wanna make a difference?

You go to the games (both home and away), GO not watch on TV, and you post your article about the game, and maybe the N&O will hire you to be the Canes reporter.

There's always somebody isn't there?

Canes are doing great, let's rip on the reporting now...

Whatever

GO CANES!!!

Uhh PK74

You must not understand that there are Cane Fans who are overseas, who live in other nations and states and sadly there are die hard fans who simply don't have the means to be able to attend even if the seats were in the nose bleed sections...let alone going off to where the canes play. And as for ripping or raggin on the press coverage here at the N&O...i am sure that even where you work or the place of business you may own...there is always room for improvement...is there not ? So and i respectfully request that you go and grab you spray bottle of Windex and go back to cleaning all of the windows in your cystal palace, unless you are worthy of "casting the first stone" ??

Hold up esteban...

I think it comes down to this question: WHY do people feel like they have to cling to the negatives? It takes more energy to frown than smile...The way our team is playing it literally takes EFFORT to find something to gripe about. I believe 100% that the fans have a right to expect a certain level of performance from their team, their newspaper, whatever it is they are spending their money on. But with the availability of info on the internet, traditional print media is a thing of the past. Newspapers are hurting. Chip Alexander is at every practice, posts updates on the Canes throughout the day, and does a darn good job if you ask me. Why would someone post a negative comment on an article that was posted as the game was happeneing, the entire article of which was posted mere minutes aftrer the conclusion of the game? If these people are too stooopid to find out information and have to rely on the local print media then the times have passed them by. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it is just getting old how these "fans" keep dwelling on negative stuff. If you don't like the way the team is playing, do support them. If you (not you personally, esteban) don't like the level of coverage from the N & O, don't read it. Just don't be a buzzkill simply because your life is so pathetic that you have to dwell on negative stuff to feel better about it.

EXACTLY... AGAIN

I understand that not everone can make it to all the games, or catch them on TV, myself included, my gripe is with the negativity.  I think our guys do a great job reporting, and if they use an AP story, so what?  We could be in a market where our NHL team get a section the size of a couple want-ads, but we have great reporters in Chip, Luke, and Rachel, so I'm not griping about them.

My son for one is overseas, and I'll get an email from him within hours of a game ending, asking me "Did you see the game/score?  Awesome!" So its not a matter of bad reporting, its a matter of someone not liking what was reported, or that they didn't write it themselves.

Like I said... who cares?  It is reported, and if you don't like it, why feel the need to bust on it?  It could be worse.

And what's up with the whole:

So and i respectfully request that you go and grab you spray bottle of
Windex and go back to cleaning all of the windows in your cystal
palace, unless you are worthy of "casting the first stone" ??

I know you are know for your "colorful" style, but that was just lame.  Who was I throwing stones at? "V"?  Whatever.

Go back to oiling up your Rascal for spin around the block, and don't feel the need to run defend someone who is posting negatively about coverage that the majoritty thinks is great.

GO CANES!!!

Uhh PK74

1. I don't own a rascal..it's a hoveround...and i don't wax it...but i do polish the chrome alcoa wheels on it though.

2. I was trying to get you to relax, calm down from the tone that was to me anyway full of negitivity...Yes this is America, and for the time being we all have the right to freedom of speech, expression and etc...

3. But i guess i was just being too narrow minded in my happiness that the canes did make it into the playoffs this year, and from the tone of your posting, i allowed it to bother me. Something as a rule I never allow or permit to happen to me, because i am supposed to know better. But it would sem and appear that my " humanity" got in the way. So with that I do apologise for being wrong and out of place in my statement.

Go Canes !!

please go away

did you watch the game? if so, why do you need someone else to tell you what happened? why must you complain all the time? can you not find anything positive to say? who cares if the paper hasn't filled the front page with Canes coverage?!? of all the good things to talk about with this team right now it boggles my brain why people continue to dwell on the ONLY negative thing they can find!!! it is sad!

again, who cares???

again, who cares???
