TAMPA — Another day, another game, another comeback victory.

Trailing the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0 late in the second period, the Carolina Hurricanes fought back to force overtime and then won 4-3 on Eric Staal's goal.

Power-play goals by Rod Brind'Amour and Matt Cullen, and then an even-strength goal by Staal tied the score. Staal then won it at 4:56 of OT on a shot set up by Ray Whitney.

"We don't want to do that every game but we'll take it," Staal said. "The guys kept battling and battling. We really put the pressure on them. We kept attacking and attacking."

The Hurricanes, after falling behind 3-0, broke through on  Brind'Amour's power play goal with just 8.7 seconds left in the second.  The Canes had failed to score with a two-man advantage a few minutes before Brind'Amour's goal.

Cullen followed early in the third and then Staal struck at 9:56 to make it a new game.

Mark Recchi's goal at 8:20 of the first period gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead in its home opener. Recchi, a member of the Canes' 2006 Stanley Cup champions, scored on a rebound of a Matt Carle shot against Michael Leighton, getting the start in goal.

Defenseman Janne Niskala then added a power-play goal at 10:27 after Wade Brookbank's roughing penalty. ...

Defensemen Anton Babchuk and Josef Melichar are again healthy scratches for the Canes. ...

It's hard to find too much fault in a 6-4 season-opening win, and Canes coach Peter Laviolette was pleased -- both last night after beating the Florida Panthers and after reviewing the game video.

But he is a coach. And coaches, you know, are never completely pleased.

"I liked some of the things I saw last night and some things we can get a lot better at," he said today as the Canes prepared to play the Tampa Bay Lightning. "We gave up too much and I don't think we generated enough. I do think there's room for improvement.

"There were things I liked about the game. I liked our resiliency. I liked coming back from 2-0. We gave up the lead and tied it up and came back again and played pretty good down the stretch.

"There were some real positives to take from it but I think there is room for improvement."...

While Cam Ward was big for the Canes in goal when it counted, Laviolette wants sharper defensive play tonight against the Bolts.

"It needs to be better," he said. "It's early, but I think communication goes a long way. There are times when we could have talked and eliminated a lot of problems.

"Maybe we're just not comfortable. The lines are still somewhat new. You could tell it was early in the season, but we need to get better than we were in front of the goaltender last night."

Rod Brind'Amour put in almost 18 minutes in the opener but said the left knee was holding up. "It's fine, no big deal," he said today. ...

Summa youse weren't payin' 'tenshun...

The reference to Cam in goal was from Coach Lavi's comments from BEFORE the game, referring to the Friday game. And agreed it was a bit confusing.

Not Cam in goal

That was Leighton not Cam in goal.

monday blackout?

is mondays game a blackout for the fans? i know the team is where the 3rd jerseys, are we all wearing black?

We can't keep ...

We can't keep coming from behind like that. As it will catch up with after a while...And tampa's goalie while good....Cam Could have been better...But where was the D ? to help Cam keep the crease clean and get the rebounds and get them down the ice ? True it is early...yet Like the Coach...I am never totally pleased...All the time...and sigh...The Rats Lost 4-2 ...

Go Canes !!

Actually

Leighton was in goal last night ... not Cam!

The D does need to crank it

The D does need to crank it up a notch in front of goal-- but dude, Cam didn't play in this game-- Leighton did.

You mean Leighton, right?...

You mean Leighton, right?... But, I do agree in part.  The best thing about this, besides the 4pts,  is the fact that in 05-06 we had a habit of coming back from early deficits.   Early, but character building.

i remember a couple of years

i remember a couple of years ago we came back with very dominate 3rd periods... how did that season end up?

Michael Leighton was in goal last night...

....but your point is taken.

One of the hallmarks of the '06 team was its ability to regroup and win games in which they were trailing going into the third period, however, I don't know that you want to get out of the gate expecting to have to come back every night.

The defense looks shaky right now, with the same zone-clearing issues that plagued the last two seasons.  That said, the Gleason-Pitkanen has the potential to be huge for this team.

It takes time for new faces to get used to each, but I think folks like Glen Wesley and Tom Rowe will get their blue line shored up as the season progresses.

And, finally, note to Matt Carle and the Mullet: Of all the players you'd least like to anger on the Canes, its Eric Staal!!

Tampa merely has Lightning, we've got the full storm!!!

Cam?

Cam didn't play last night night. Leighton did.

Pitkanen

Pitkanen was absolutely ridiculous tonight. That's the type of impact a legit top-pairing defenseman can make on a team.

Couldn't agree more

Pitkanen was absolutely the player of the game. How there was no mention of him the report in the N&O was amazing. He was without a shadow of a doubt the number 1 star. He kept driving the team forward...in fact at times it was hard to believe he is supposed to be a defenseman.
