The Carolina Hurricanes had plenty of scoring chances in the first period, but Tampa Bay leads 1-0 after 20 minutes at the RBC Center Saturday.
To name just a few of those opportunities, Hurricanes forward Ray Whitney couldn't get to the puck in time, with it trickling forward and Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith laid out in front of the net just at about the mid-point of the period.
Then Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen got a shot to trickle slowly through Smith, but Lightning defender Andre Meszaros was there to save the goal.
With just under six minutes left, Whitney and Hurricanes Erik Cole threatened to score as they skated side-by-side up the slot. Whitney passed to Cole, who passed right back. But Whitney's shot found Smith's pads.
Less than a minute after Carolina winger Tom Kostopoulos drew a tripping penalty, Tampa Bay forward Martin St. Louis put the rebound of a shot by defenseman Kurtis Foster past Carolina goalie Manny Legace. Sun, 11/22/2009 - 11:40 — Otag1Great effort for the entire 60 minutes! As the first period came to an end I made the comment to my better half that the boys are back. They have been playing consistently better each game for the last two weeks. Just hope it lasts and we can stay healthy, you can tell the Canes are feeling better and some of those nagging injuries are clearing up. Great to see us take our game to the opponent and dictate the game. The little western road trip next week followed by Buffaloe and Vacouver next weekend will be a real litmus test. If we can get 5 - 6 points in these 4 games I believe you well see the team begin to climb up the standings. Go Canes!

Pitkanen is very good, and
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 11:17 — ctillPitkanen is very good, and at age 25 he can still get better. Remember, he's the second-highest paid Cane and will be third-highest next season -- unless JR spends big bucks for a top-tier free agent. So, when Pitkanen is out of the lineup, the Canes miss him.
First Game I Have Been In Attendance
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 09:43 — WAStoutIn a couple of weeks....I must say....very different team than what I have seen on T.V.
Brindy and AWard still a step slow...other than that....no complaints.
Congrats LaRose. Congrats Sammy. Congrats team. Gleason looks like a new man out there.
And I never really realized how short St Louis is until he lined up next to Whitney. It's amazing that guy has not gotten killed out there.
Take your time Staal....100% only.
Effort
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 00:17 — garybdiverThe key tonight. A full game with the effort and confidence. Abramsdoug is spot on about LaRose. I for one was very happy to see him score. You have to feel for the guy. And I'm proud of the boys. After playing great in the first period and really being the better team, to be down by one earlier this season the game would be over. But they didn't get down and continued to dictate the flow of the game. Keep up the good work boys.
Build on this
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 00:10 — HockeydogSolid, great game tonight! Forget about those shootout wins that should have been won in regulation, this is the game to build on! 60 minutes of hard play, smart line combos, and a goalie who looks to be rounding back into NHL form.
A great effort !!
Sat, 11/21/2009 - 23:58 — esteban1949it is funny as i watched the game on FSCarolinas and to watch Joni Pikinen skate and move around the ice as he does, he makes it look effortless. Now i know that it's NOT true but the grace and ease which the guy does what he does is outstanding. And yes Chad LaRose got the "no goals yet" monkey off his back. as it was pointed out by
Chip and others here, it was a complete 60 minute game and efforts. Even A. Ward made a few hits tonight. Saw the after game interview of Manny on news 14...and he even said it was good that the team as a whole pulled together. Again a great effort !
Now if only Mark Martin had a better chance to win the Championship tomorrow, I'd be happy as a clam in a bowl of chowder !!! Sigh...but i guess i'll have to settle for tonights win huh ??
Go Canes !!
Back from the Tampa Bay game
Sat, 11/21/2009 - 23:20 — abramsdougExcellent game to watch at the RBC. The crowd was somewhat less that I would have hoped; but it was loud and energetic. The Hurricanes came out hitting and skating hard. Even after Tampa Bay scored, the team didn't let down. Ruutu continues to carry the team; and his goal set the tone. It was also great that Jokinen scored. I can't imagine what in the world Tampa Bay was thinking in trading him for non-NHL players. When LaRose scored, I think everybody in the RBC felt relief for him -- not to mention relief that there might actually be a win in regulation.
Having Pitkanen back made an incredible difference. His skating is amazing. Gleason was pounding every Lightning player he could find. Corvo was moving and passing with much more confidence. Sutter continues to be amazing and with a little bit of luck could have scored twice tonight. Cole is playing with much more intensity.
Moving Brind'Amour to the fourth line (which many of us have been begging Maurice and Francis to do), made a huge difference. Yelle has much better quickness and hands than Brind'Amour. Samsonov seems much, much more comfortable in getting passes to Yelle and to LaRose with Yelle centering. Brind'Amour I thought had his best game of the season. The fourth line was hitting hard and grinding.
Manny Legace was very solid and avoided leaving rebounds. Alberts had an amazing play where he swept the puck away from a certain score. Aaron Ward had a better game. Wallin was better positionally than in many games. I still think by next year Rodney will be on the Hurricanes team and that neither Aaron Ward and Wallin will be re-signed.
I liked the fact that Cullen was playing with urgency and was blocking shots and
weaving at full speed through traffic. When he plays that way, he is tremendous.
Forslund was saying after the game that the Hurricanes played a sixty minute game; and they did. It's the kind of hockey that is great to watch. I wonder what the lines will be when Staal returns. There are now two lines that are working quite well; and Sutter is far too good a player to keep off the first line.
With all sports the law of unintended consequences applies. I never imagined that the Hurricanes would start off so terribly; however, by doing so, Sutter was given a chance to show he was more than ready to play at the NHL level. Also, with Staal's injury, Ruutu, Jokinen, Sutter, and Cullen took on much more responsibility for team performance and team leadership. In the long run, the lessons they are learning now may well improve the team for seasons to come.
Whatever happens with respect to the playoffs, with this kind of effort, it's great to come to the RBC and watch the Hurricanes play.
Solid performance
Sat, 11/21/2009 - 22:55 — KlatterI am very impressed by the boys tonight. They are so much more confident. Cullen was flying all over the ice. Roddy looked good and had a few nice set ups for Dywer and K-Time. They got hemmed in their own zone a few times, but it didn't cost them badly. I have a good feeling about them now, but let's see how they do. I am glad because I am going to the Buffalo game next Saturday. Go Canes!
A 60 Minute Effort
Sat, 11/21/2009 - 21:46 — Shutyour5holeA very solid 60 minute effort tonight.
Well done boys !
