Hurricanes 3, Flyers 2 (overtime)
Sergei Samsonov wins the game at the 3:53 mark of overtime, skating up the left side, then crossing in front of the goalie and putting the goal past goalie Martin Biron's right.
The Canes out-shoot the Flyers 11-6 and had a few strong spurts in the third period, but neither team scores and the game goes to overtime. ...
Hurricanes 2, Flyers 2 (third period)
The Canes started the second period with some sloppy play and nearly paid the price there. That quick spurt of goals late in the period gave them the lead, but the Flyers tied the game back up in the final minute of the period. The Flyers led in shots in the period, 14-5.
Hurricanes 2, Flyers 2 (second period)
The Flyers strike right back in the final minute of the second period. A trio of Flyers move up the right wing and Joffrey Lupul passes to center where Jeff Carter puts the puck in the net at the 19:14 mark. ...
In a quick series, the Hurricanes tie the game and then take the lead in the span of 1:06. First, Patrick Dwyer gets his first NHL goal. Joni Pitkanen had fired from the left wing, but the puck apparently touched Dwyer, in front of the net, on the way in at the 15:00 mark. Then, Tuomo Ruutu scores from the right wing. Eric Staal and then Sergei Samsonov moved the puck up from the right corner to Ruutu at the 16:06 mark. ...
With Philadelphia's Arron Asham in the box for interference at the 2:53 mark, sloppy puck-handling led to a short-handed opportunity for the Flyers' Jeff Carter, who brokeaway and might have scored had he controlled the puck better. The Flyers lead the league in short-handed goals with 8. Just after the power play, the Flyers appeared to score with superb passing, but the goal was called off because of a penalty on the bench for too many men on the ice. ...
The Canes out-shot the Flyers 10-5 in the first period. A better first period than Wednesday, perhaps, but they trail, nonetheless. The Flyers' first shot of the game, is the only one that's found net. And, as it turns out, Lupul's goal actually was guided in by the stick of Canes' defender Joni Pitkanen...
Hurricanes 0, Flyers 1 (first period)
Wachovia Center is pretty full, but not packed. Surprising considering it's the day after Thanksgiving. Too much turkey. ...
Wade Brookbank and Josh Gratton go to fisticuffs. Brookbank get's Gratton's sweater off, and both land solid blows. If you ask the Philly crowd who won, you know who they'd likely say. ... They both get five minutes in the box at 6:37. ...
Niclas Wallin sent to the box at the 3:42 mark for hooking and 25 seconds later, the Flyers' Jeff Carter passed from the top of the left circle down to Joffrey Lupul, who extended his stick in front of goal and put it in, though the replay shows the puck bouncing over Pitkanen's stick. ...
Here is the Canes' starting line: Ray Whitney, Rod Brind'Amour, Chad LaRose, Joe Corvo and Niclas Wallin. Cam Ward in the crease. ...
Tim Gleason, Josef Melichar and Scott Walker are scratches.

Without knowing the details of any possible injury, then we can't really say what's best. What if Staal indeed has a shoulder injury as has been rumored. What if he can't really make it worse by playing, but in order to get truly healthy, it requires the type of surgery that Kaberle and Stillman had? One that requires 4-6 months recovery time. Then what do you do? It may simply not be as simple as a "couple of days" rest to get them fully healthy.
Complacency?
Sat, 11/29/2008 - 12:29 — scomilI don't know how you can use that word in the same sentence with Samsonon this year. He's been skating hard all year. Cullen was the one who finally took advantage of it in OT yesterday. I guess if you can't give him credit after a game like that you never will, for whatever reason.
Samsonov (I guess)
Sat, 11/29/2008 - 00:39 — Nico37So! Now Sammi's on pace for 6 goals this season! (for the slow kids, that means based on performance you can expect 5 more goals this season). Why on earth would any GM sign this fool (again, for you slow kids, we're talking about Samsonov) to a contract longer than 1 year? It's not like any other organization was going to "lure him away". *snicker* He should've only been signed to a 1 year deal. It's obvious any contract longer than a year gives this guy a sense of complacency. Although...part of me can't wait 'till 2010 when people in this city actually start questioning why Rutherford signed him to a contract for 3 yrs - when he'd always performed horribly with any sort of long term contract & ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER TEAM was even vaguely interested in him.
Oh, well...ignorance is bliss :-)

Fri, 11/28/2008 - 21:59 — scomilWhat a highlight-reel goal by Samsonov. To me that one of the best games that Cam Ward has ever played. He just did not have any lapses. Oh, if he could keep that up - hopefully he does. Pleasant surprises were Pitkanen and Eaves who both had a lot of hits and displayed a really nice attitude out there. Cullen and Staal looked more like themselves. Wallin is having a helluva year so far. I guess the gist of it is that this was a team effort - everybody pitched in. The question is, what will the Canes look like this Sunday?
Yippie !!
Sat, 11/29/2008 - 00:33 — esteban1949We won !! I am shocked ! But after seeing the play of Larose,Sutter Joni and a few others...This was a very very pleasant surprise. As my next door neighbor invited me over as he knew i was a hockey fan...and we also were watching the Nebrask Colorado game but we had to go when it was 24-24...as his grandkids showed up and they drug him off to the Mall...trust me he was kicking and screaming all the way out the door...we locked up for him...laughing as i rolled back to my side of our yard. I be glad i have a power chair...my grandkids can't do that to me !! Was Glad to see yet again the work ethic of LaRose, Dwyer & Sutter, the skated their hearts out. And to top that off the jr.Canes in Lethbridge won 4-2 tonight, but sadly the Rats Lost !!! Bummer !!
Canes 3, Flyers 2
Fri, 11/28/2008 - 16:37 — RichardcairnGlad of the two points. Props to Cam Ward. But we still have an apology for an NHL team. Certainly more effort than in recent games but still not nearly enough. Brindy and Staal showed flashes in the 3rd period but still only shadows. Tripp wondering if they (and others) are injured. If these two are then for goodness sake rest them. Better to get them 100% and playing the way they can rather than putting up with the way they are. Wallin has been playing well most of the season; hope those who wanted him outta' here are suitably embarassed. How to read Ruutu's comment about team not well prepared before games, hence poor first periods? Shot at coaching staff? Shot at JR for having banned morning skates? Shot at players for not working to get their game face on before the puck drops?
