Carolina came out strong but had to grind it out in overtime once more.
Joe Corvo scored his second straight game-winning goal for a 2-1 overtime victory over the Florida Panthers before 14,533 at the RBC Center Thursday.
It was the Canes’ first back-to-back win since November, but the Canes now have gained at least a point in the last six games.
Corvo, dogged by defenders, moved the puck in front of the net and back-handed the game-winner with 44 seconds left.
“Just a little patience,” said Corvo. “I thought I would show a little patience.
“I think everybody in the arena thought I was going to shoot that puck when it came up to me. But the guy didn't fall for it, so I kind of had to make a desperation move around him.
“Once I got around him it was kind of a waiting game. I saw Ray (Whitney) peeling off for a one-timer and a guy closed him off, so I had to make a move."
Rod Brind'Amour also was credited with an assist on the play, his 700th, which makes him the 33rd player in the NHL books with 400 goals and 700 assists.
“It's something when you're done and you look back it's nice to have these kinds of milestones,” said Brind’Amour. “But the big thing was the win. We deserved that game, I thought. We gave up kind of an unlucky goal, really.”
For 30 minutes the Hurricanes played dominant hockey but owned only a 1-0 lead.
After playing three strong power plays, they turned their fourth opportunity into a bugaboo when former Hurricane Cory Stillman emerged from the penalty box just as Carolina wing Justin Williams lost the puck on the edge of the neutral zone.
Florida center Kamil Kreps got the puck to Stillman, who was alone. He skated towards center and backhanded a goal on Cam Ward.
It was Williams who scored first in the opening period. He hadn’t scored since November 23, 2007. Williams missed the first 25 games with a torn Achilles tendon.
It was also the team’s first goal in three first period power plays. The Canes looked strong on all three of those power plays and out-hustled their opponents through the mid-way point of the second period.
Williams’ goal came the 14:52 mark when Ray Whitney got the puck down to him in the left corner.
He charged the goal and put the puck past Florida goalie Tomas Vakoun, who kept Florida in the game with 15 saves in the first period.
The Canes would have taken a 2-0 lead into the second period if not for Brett McClean, who swiped clean a shot from Whitney that had trickled past Vakoun.

Hurricanes 2, Panthers 1 (OT):
Joe Corvo scored his second game-winner of the homestand to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 overtime victory over the Florida Panthers.
Panthers tie the game early in the final period. They had just wrapped up a penalty kill when Kamil Kreps beat Justin Williams for the puck and got it down to Cory Stillman, emerging from the penalty box. Stillman was alone and scored on Cam Ward at 2:29 mark.
The Hurricanes kept up their dominance to at least the mid-way point of the second period and killed their only penalty thus far. The Panthers failed to capitalize on the five shots they got in in the period. Carolina had 12 shots in the period. ...
Tim Gleason retaliates for Gregory Campbell's hit on Ryan Bayda. Gleason and and Campbell both are sent to the box for five minutes, but not before Gleason pummels Campbell to the ice with, but not limited to, some lefts. ...
Winger Justin Williams scores a power play goal at the 14:52 mark. Ray Whitney gets the puck down to Williams in the left corner. He charged the goal and made a move on Florida goalie Tomas Vakoun for his first goal since November 23, 2007, against the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was the third power play of the period. ...
The Canes come through with a strong first period, though they only came away with a goal on three power plays that saw them narrowly miss several opportunities. Vakoun had 15 saves on the Canes' 16 shots. Not long after Williams' goal, Whitney was robbed of a goal by Florida's Brett McClean. Bunched up in front of the net, Whitney thought he had punched the puck past Vakoun. He had, but McClean swiped the puck out just before it crossed the line. ...
Here is the starting line: Patrick Eaves, Matt Cullen, Justin Williams, Dennis Seidenberg, Joni Pitkanen. ...
The scratches: Niclas Wallin, Wade Brookbank, Anton Babchuk.

Panthers Game
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 12:28 — abramsdougI appreciate the job Paul Maurice and Ron Francis are doing. The team is giving much better effort and is playing much more intelligently since the coaching change. Offensively, it is very difficult to generate offense from the second line with Brind'Amour not playing as well as everybody has come to expect of him. His play is improving, I think, but he is nowhere near his pre-injury condition. I hope his pre-injury speed, quickness, and relentlessness will return soon. Similarly, Justin Williams is making great progress, but he is nowhere near 100%. He is getting better each shift; but when he gets his skill level back, the offense firepower of the team will improve dramatically. Patrick Eaves is playing well, but he is not yet finding his goal-scoring touch. To my mind it is fairly remarkable that with only the Staal/Ruutu/Samsonov line showing consistency in scoring at even strength, and with two key players still recovering from major knee surgeries, the team is hovering at the eighth spot. The Hurricanes are capable of scoring 3 to 4 goals a game once they get more comfortable with the Maurice/Francis system. Of course, the scoring firepower could be enhanced if Jim Rutherford were suddenly given the green light to add a large-bodied, quick, and intensely competitive forward as an offensive threat.
Happy ?
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 09:37 — esteban1949from what i heard on the radio broadcast and now from all of your posts, it seems we still have a micro-wave popcorn mentality way of thinking...even i have been very guilty of that.
But we are fans, who live in the time of instant gratification and what it aint done yet mentality.
gee it is good to be human and a fan huh ? we can't win either way can we ? as a win while was good..but it could have been great IF...But we all woke up this morning though didn't we ?
And here some think I'm the dumbest rock in the pile...I liked last nights game and yes i too could and can find fault...But i am not going there...I was glad we won..! But come time for Boston...and folks...if we don't come out with blood in our hearts and seeking to rip them a new butt with no quarter given...then this road trip will be a long and hard one...
So what do we want for Christmas ?? The Cup of Course ! But i'd be very happy if we got into the playoffs, did our best...regardless...or is that not good enough ?
Go Canes !
Canes are responding
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 09:25 — Hockeydogto the coaching change rather nicely. They looked good on the PP and the passing and puck support 5 on 5 was as good as I have seen this team in quite a while. Both the Canes goals were very nice. Justin Williams is starting to look awesome again. Don't sell the Panthers short. they are a good team and this was a good win for the club. I didn't see anything horrible last night.
Mo Humor
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 09:22 — wxray1Mo is relaxed. I guess with no great expectations, he's just relaxed.
I forgot how much I missed his understated humor. Yesterday's interview about the Panther's coach and last night's quip about losing the "amour" for Willi after the give-away were classic Mo. I dunno, I think it's fun to watch. Never know, he might even drop an unsuspecting F-bomb.
Glad for the win...but that 3rd was horrible
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 08:55 — Richie7The biggest difference between that 3rd period and the one against the Flyers was that the Panthers are not the Flyers...For whatever reason they seem to be going in to a shell in the 3rd period and letting the oponent have control of the puck, good teams will make them pay for that kind of play. If the 3rd had been played like the first and second, 2 pts would have been earned in regulation. The 3rd period was survive in their own end, dump puck and change, that is not inspirational hockey.
No Mystery on why we have terrible 3rd with the lead...
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 09:37 — TheReaper49If you were around during MO's previous tenure, then this should not be a surprise. The guy absolutely has his team go into a complete defensive shell as soon as they get any kind of lead.
The results are what happened in Philly and flirting with disaster like we were last night.
All that said, the team has more jump, is looser, and has more confidence. Not sure where this season goes, or what happens next season as far as coaching goes, but I am glad Lavi is gone. Just not ready to say I am happy MO is here.
truthfully
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 09:02 — wylde4canesThe 2nd was not a great period either. The third was on and off.
I was at the game
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 09:23 — Richie7well not sure how it looked on TV and what Trip and Forslund were saying but it just felt to me like Florida owned the puck in the 3rd, thankfully they did not capitalize. I still felt like we were skating and attacking in the 2nd but the third felt like we were reacting and trying to survive..again that is just what it felt like to me. Also felt like we went back on the attack in OT but 4 on 4 tends to lead to that.
Again I am grateful for the win but am holding off on the euphoria till I see more proof that there is reason.

Fri, 12/19/2008 - 08:27 — wylde4canes2 wins in a row, is nice, but I ain't buying it just yet, next 3 games are defining for our season, then we can make some real judgments.
Nice
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 05:15 — jgrant641I blame coach Mo for the win!

haha..You also have to
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 08:24 — JPMajorhaha..You also have to blame Ronnie! It's nice to see the team doing well agian. Let's just hope it continues. Hopefully Mo & Ronnie can keep them headed in the right direction..GO CANES!
Blame the coach
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 06:41 — CanenutJohnnyg you made me laugh out loud.
If we are going to blame him for the loses then we should blame him for the wins.
What ever Mo is telling these guys they are listening and executing.
I have certainly enjoyed watching them since the return of Mo.
Agreed...
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 10:00 — jgrant641People can hate Mo all they want, and whine about it every day...
...but the fact is the players on the bench are now smiling and seem more relaxed. Staal is playing almost to form and I even thought Brindy looked a bit better the past few games... maybe not 100% yet, but better.
I am in no way suggesting that the team is back to 100% either, but all it takes is a good feeling in the locker room to turn the tide.

good win!!
Fri, 12/19/2008 - 08:28 — vdotuI am glad for the change, and I am glued back to the game. Lavi's system had me changing channels.
Keep it going boys. On to Boston!
Ward was sharp... almost
Thu, 12/18/2008 - 22:53 — ctillWard was sharp... almost stopped the Stillman goal.
