Hordichuk headed to free agency

Bookmark and Share

Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford confirmed Monday that negotiations with Darcy Hordichuk have broken off and the Canes will not sign the free-agent forward before he hits the open market next week.

Carolina sent a fifth-round pick in 2009 to Nashville for the rights to the rough-and-tumble forward Thursday, but were unable to work out a deal. They'll get Nashville's fifth-round pick in 2010 if they don't sign him before training camp — which looks unlikely.

"We're not going to get anything done with him," Rutherford said. "The fact that we had tried to get a jump on it and he wasn't interested in what we had to say, it would appear we're not getting him."

what do you think about

what do you think about Darcy Tucker, in regards to not signing Hordichuck, only reason I bring it up is because Toronto is on the hook for 2/3 of his salary, which might make it a decent deal. What is everyone's thoughts?

I posted this on another story also, just want to know what you all think...could be the worst post ever, just getting a carolina vibe...

No biggie...

This falling through means nothing to us. It was probably just a "good-faith" gesture from JR to Nashville.

Hordichuk was heading to free agency, which means he just leaves Nashville, and they have a 5th round pick in 2010. Carolina gives them 2009 Fifth round pick for Hordichuk, which gives Nashville at least a chance at having two 5th round picks. It didn't work out, so they only have one, but it is in 2009, not 2010. It still has some benefit as they will possibly reap the benefits of that player a year sooner that they would have.

So it actually works out in Nashville's favor, which may help grease the wheels for a future trade with them.

JR the lowballer?

Hordichuk made peanuts...as far as NHL salaries go. I don't think JR was "lowballing" him, he probably didn't want to come here...that simple...it's not like JR loses anything, he'll get the 5th round pick back.

I always hated Hordichuk anyway, he's not even a good tough guy.

On another note.... we don't NEED to get toughness from Ruutu, that's not why he was traded for. We need production from this kid. You don't sign tough guys to multi-million dollar contracts. Sticking up for you teammates is play gets chippy is one thing, but it doesn't need to be his sole purpose.

Conboy! Conboy! Conboy!

The answer is with Conboy! He's far more versatile than Hordichuk (can play wing & D) and hit just as hard. Plus he isn't afraid to beat somebody down if need be.

The idea I get from JR's

The idea I get from JR's statement is that Hordichuk didn't even really give him a chance to make offers.
Probably just doesn't want to play here.

This team will look alot like last year

JR will be unable to deal for a D-Man during the UFA signing Period. The trades will happen in November and at the trading peroid. If we trade Cole before then we will give him away. Personally, I hope he gets resigned. The Toughness will come from Brookbank,Conboy,Ruutu. The Free Agent Blue Liner will be a Power play guy and Sutter won't be up till January

How JR spends his money from here on out.

1.5M Larose
2.5M Ruutu
.6M Conboy
.6M Brookbank
3M Free Agent

1.5m for LAROSE? Are you

1.5m for LAROSE? Are you smoking something? I hope you mean over a multi-year deal. I like Rosie, but no way is he worth 1.5 per season.

As I see it...

Although Conboy and Brookbank played some offense they are defensman.  Rutuu isn't resigned yet and neither is Seidenberg.  Keep in mind Sutter could make a run at a #4 center spot in camp.

Personally I think we need a top pair d-man to pair with Corvo, not Gleason.

I also think 1.5 is too much for Larose.  I like him a lot but just don't see him being worth that much.  Seidenberg may see $1mill.

I am also not sure why you say JR "will not be able to deal for a D-Man during the UFA signing Period."  While I don't expect the flood gates to open for the Hurricanes on July 1st, I do expect around August teams that though their d-man was worth a lot and found no takers will start to lower their prices, it happens every year.

Corvo - ???
Gleason - Wallin
Seidenberg - Kaberle
Borer/Conboy/Brookbank

Whitney - Staal - Cole
Samsonov - Brind'Amour - Williams
Ruutu - Cullen - Walker
LaRose - Letowski/Sutter - Eaves

compensation

I assure you Montreal and the Rangers are offering some sort of (currently confidential) compensation if they do in fact sign Sundin or Campbell, respectively.

Didn't think so

I didn't see this happening anyhow. He isn't the best fighter and I won't lose any sleep over this.

Is it not possible to get by with team toughness and not rely on hired muscle?

::sniff sniff::

I have some extra tissues if anybody is crying over this one...

Hey, at least we didn't

Hey, at least we didn't waste any time on that one.

JR the Lowballer

JR probably asked him to take a pay cut to come here and play for the former stanley cup champions like it's his dream job.

So, I guess Conboy has a

So, I guess Conboy has a better chance of re-signing now.

Quick question for you Luke,

Quick question for you Luke, if teams like Montreal and the Rangers can get permission to talk to star players like Sundin and Campbell then surely we could've done so with Hordichuk. Why didn't we? I would think we'd want to get an idea of whether or not he has any interest in playing for us before trading for his rights. Not a huge loss with a swap of 5th rounders but it still seems like it was rather pointless.

Quick Question

I agree--good question.  Admittedly, I'm not in the inner circle but I always wonder how situations like Hordichuck and Dalpe happen if the Canes did their homework.

On an unrelated matter, I'm surprised that Mike Commodore's name has not surfaced--unless I missed it.  He was a real fan favorite and seemed devoted to the Canes.  He wasn't the same player in Ottawa. Loyalty goes a long way in my book. I'd like to see him back in Carolina....

Oh no we suck again.

Oh no we suck again.
