The Canes' Eric Staal, Tuomo Ruutu and Joni Pitkanen will be going to Vancouver for the Winter Olympics. But what about defenseman Tim Gleason?
Team USA will be announced tomorrow, and Gleason hopes to hear his name called. But will he? His thoughts:
"I think my chances are 50-50," he said. "I think I've played well enough to make an impact or make them think twice or whatever the case is.
"If that's the case, obviously I'd be honored to do so. If not, then that's the way she goes. You get 10 days off.
"It would be a great honor. I'm looking forward to the opportunity if it arises. If not, I'll work hard and you never know if it'll come again."
Gleason attended the Team USA orientation camp this past summer. He said he believed the U.S. selection committee might be leaning toward taking younger players -- someone like 21-year-old forward Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks, for example.
"At the camp they mentioned the 1980 (U.S.) team, where there were a lot of young no-namers, a young team," he said. "I think they're kind of going toward that route.
"I'm sure they'll have a few veterans as well. But at the same time, I think they're going to go a little younger and be a surprise team."
Gleason is 26. Does that rate as young or old?
"I feel old," he said, smiling. "But I don't know if 26 is old in this league.
"On that team I think it would be closer to the older side of things. So I don't know. I'm guessing they'll go a bit younger, so we'll see."

WHAT MORE CAN YOU SAY?
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 16:35 — PretzelManAfter taking a puck in the face, being stitched up, and coming back in to make a short-handed goal what else can you say about the the toughness of Tim Gleason? I really hope he makes it!!!!

Thu, 12/31/2009 - 14:19 — CharlotteCaniacI'll join the list of Gleason supporters. There isn't a person on our roster more deserving of the opportunity. I think he is the ONLY person on our roster deserving, period.
If Team USA has 6 defensemen
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 13:23 — caneshockeyfanIf Team USA has 6 defensemen better than Tim Gleason I like our chances in Vancouver. Besides the aforementioned character traits, Gleason is a really solid defenseman that has added an offensive dimension to his game and improved his skating. 26 is *not* old for a defenseman. Maybe for a forward, but not a defenseman. I'm hard-pressed to think of 6 d-men from any country that I'd rather have on my roster.
Tim Gleason for Olympic Team
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 12:57 — Caniac5As Reelpirate stated, if anyone deserves to make an Olympic team from the Canes, it would be Tim Gleason. Tim is a very classy guy that gives his all for the team, the fans, and then himself. He is very down to earth and remembers what he had to do to get here.
I vote Tim Gleason for the US Olympic Team!!!

GLEASON FOR TEAM USA
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 11:53 — schelle92I totally agree with reelpirate. Tim deserves the opportunity to represent his country (and given the chance he would do it with class). I personally hope I have to spend some of my Christmas money to personalize my Team USA jersey.

Gleason on US Team
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 10:33 — reelpirateIf anyone on the Canes (other than Ray Whitney) deserves to be on an Olympic team this year it would be Tim Gleason. I am really surprised Jokinen didn't make the Finland team. He would be another guy that seems to have played well enough to have earned a spot.
