BOSTON — There is a tomorrow for the Carolina Hurricanes.
Scott Walker's rebound shot with 1:14 left in the first overtime has given the Hurricanes victory in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
It was Walker's first playofff goal. Ray Whitney fired from the right circle and Walker was there to put knock the rebound out of the air past Boston goalie Tim Thomas.
Walker, normally tough as nails, choked up in a post-game interview with FS Carolinas' Tripp Tracy. It was a rough week for Walker, who punched former Hurricanes defenseman Aaron Ward. There were different sides to the story, with Carolina fans turning sour on Ward, who lives in the area, and several talking heads calling Walker's swing a sucker punch.
The Hurricanes will face the Pittsburgh Penguins next. ...
Boston forward Milan Lucic has tied the game at 8:19 in the third period.
Boston’s Marc Savard was behind the net and tried wrapping around. Carolina goalie Cam Ward deflected the puck out to Lucic, who was in front and he scored his third goal of the playoffs. …
Canes forward Sergei Samsonov, moving quickly up the slot, was there to receive Joni Pitkanen’s pass across the crease and score to take a 2-1 lead on the Boston Bruins at 7:44 in the second period.
Pitkanen’s pass came from the top of the left circle and Frank Kaberle, playing for the first time since late in the first round of the playoffs, earned his first playoff point, the secondary assist. …
Carolina defenseman Dennis Seidenberg’s shot, from the top of the slot, appeared to touch captain Rod Brind’Amour, who was camped in front, on the way past Boston goalie Tim Thomas.
Seidenberg was given credit and the game is tied in the first period. UPDATE: Seides' was originally given credit, but Brind'Amour was given the goal some time later. Seidenberg has two huge assists now in the playoffs, firing the shot that Jussi Jokinen deflected off his skate in the first round, for the latest regulation finish in the NHL playoffs books. There were two tenths of a second remaining.
The goal came as a power play expired. ...
Boston’s Byron Bitz put a rebound past Carolina goalie Cam Ward at 7:42 in the first period.
Bruins defenseman Dennis Wideman fired from the point and with plenty of Boston traffic in front of the net, Bitz was there with Ward drawn from center. ...
The Carolina Hurricanes get one last chance to deliver a knockout punch to the Boston Bruins, though they'll have to do it in enemy territory and without the momentum they once had.
Now that the starting lineups have been released, it looks like Scott Walker is joining Eric Staal and Ray Whitney on the top line.
Tim Conboy, Dwight Helminen and Anton Babchuk are all healthy scratches...
There has been talk about line changes, but during the pregame warmups, no changes could be discerned.
The Canes' lines remain as follows:
Whitney-Staal-Cole
LaRose-Cullen-Walker
Samsonov-Jokinen-Ruutu
Bayda-Brind'Amour-Eaves

Differences between Bruins fans and Canes Fans
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 14:40 — CaniacGuySummed up in 2 sentences:
Bruins fans *assumed* they had the series won.
Canes fans *believed* they would win the series.
Never assume. Never quit. Never listen to the "expurts".
ok Caniacs we need a name
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 11:07 — jejohn8ok Caniacs
we need a name for this game and this series...

The Boston Pee Party
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 14:54 — Hockeydog'Cause they ended up peeing themselves lol
( just having fun, the Bruins are a very solid team that will be a champion if they stay together)
Hey Hockeydog
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 16:58 — esteban1949that should be The Boston Peed Party...as that is what they did...hehehe...now anybody seen the natural gas & "flutice" party spokesman AKA Jumptheshark dude around lately...i was going to thank him for his kind, and encouraging words of and about the Canes and We, The fans...he was here a while ago...but like a puff of "gas"...he's gone!!! seemed like a likeable chap...in a round about way.... But I'm an old guy ...what would i know ???
Go Canes !!
Hey, Esteban
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 17:13 — NCBuff_CaniacThe gassy one wimped out and signed off yesterday at around 5:40 in reply to one of Luke's other posts. He said don't bother to wish him well, because he wouldn't be checking the N&O blogs anymore. Guess he know the B's were going down. Actually his sign off was reasonable classy. Too bad his posts generally weren't.
Lemonade
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 10:47 — Caniac16Does anyone know where to find the best lemonade in North West Raleigh? I heard a small stand somewhere off Norwood is excelent!!
Great series
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 10:09 — HockeydogCongrats to Boston for a great game 7, could have gone either way. Just watching the faces of players last night the Canes seemed to be the calmer bunch. Boston had more pressure to win at home, being the #1 seed. Cardiac Canes seem to thrive on the pressure better. Not that they have a lot of external pressure as nobody gives them much respect.
Good, keep it that way. After a series like this the handshake at the end really shows itself to be one of the great traditions in all of sports. But then hockey is the greatest of all sports!
Double the Joy
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 11:01 — canesman1Bettman tried his hardest to make sure Baaaston will be in the finals, the hockey gods said nope...not this year. Wins like this are sooo much sweeter when the refs and the leauge front office so obvoiusly don't want you to win. This is also twice as nice for me because i'm a Yankees fan as well. Those arrogant SOB's never showed proper respect. Great job Guys. GO CANES
Officiating and the NHL Playoffs
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 11:33 — abramsdougOn the subject of officiating in the NHL, I concede that officiating an NHL playoff game is one of the most difficult jobs one can envision as a referee. I also concede that by definition an NHL referee rarely, if ever, pleases both teams. I continue to be convinced, however, that the overall thrust of officiating has been similiar to that of the NBA -- where certain superstar players have their own personal space and rules. What is a travel or hack for ordinary stars is merely a great move or fine defense for them. In the NBA I found the officiating so partisan and predictable that I stopped watching NBA games. I was not shocked at all to find that at least one NBA official had been shaving points with his calls. I had played enough organized basketball including at college that I could tell by the timing and nature of the discretionary calls in the NBA that the officials were trying to be outcome determinative. In short, they were attempting to influence which team won. In the NHL, the officials permit certain teams to play "their style of play" -- despite the fact that if another team performed the same acts, penalties would be assessed. I also would be skeptical that the referees could pass lie detector tests that their own personal views of how a game should be called doesn't influence potentially the outcome. I don't suggest the officiating in the NHL has been lowered to that of the NBA; but I do submit it is time for the NHL to study closely the timing, context, and frequency of certain calls and non-calls. NHL fans are passionate and the NHL is increasing in popularity. The last thing it needs is to have poor officiating become more than typical pro sports conversation to a matter of major concern.
Let's not spew inaccuracies
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 19:04 — MichaelProctonThere has been no NBA official proven to have "shaven points."
True
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 13:21 — GoShelfCertain players seem to get away with a lot more (Chara) and certain players (Crosby) get every call. I understand officiating is tough, I've been a hockey ref before, but there's no excuse for some of the calls we witnessed this past series. The blown icing call, the lack of penalties called against Boston, the ticky tacky stick calls they called against us last night. It's tough when we have to beat the ref's and the other team at the same time. It also bugs me when something gets called in the first period but stops getting called because it's the 3rd period, which usually means it shouldn't have been called in the first period - ref's are officiating proactively and not reactively. I hope they get it straight this series.
Walker's dance on the ice reminded me of...
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 08:34 — wxray1A bit like Jimmy Valvano. That, "I can't believe this, I need someone to hug but don't know what to do" jump and wander thing.
It was great. Now, everyone calm down and get some class.
The Bruins played a great game and series too. The Canes have more work to do.
Congrats Canes
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 07:50 — Penscrosby87What a great game!! Should be a great series coming up. Ward is playing unreal!! I look forward to the Staal vs Staal storyline and how it will unfold. I love that Ronnie Franchise is behind the bench as well....always a classy guy!! I am sure the Canes are a better team having him there. Wish he could have finished his career in Pittsburgh! Off to the ECF!!
Wow, what a Great series
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 07:32 — Canes73Woooooohoooooo.
You know, as much smack as the Bruins fans talk during the series, at the end of it all, you gotta give them credit for going out with class. They way they stood there and supported their team after they lost, was commendable. You wouldn't see that in Montreal.
Too bad we have to wait till Monday to see the Canes play the Pens...I want them to play now...although I'm sure the players are really looking forward to some recovery time after going to war with Chara, Lucic and the boys. Should be a great series! GO CANES!!!
Bruins Fans
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 09:59 — Butch42Sorry, I can't give props to the fans at the Garden. That was the 3rd game out of 4 in this series that they have booed their own team. I can't respect fans that boo their own team when they're behind. No, it wasn't a Luuucic cheer. It was during the power play in the 2nd when they couldn't score. That's just pitiful.
I agree with you about the
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 11:46 — Canes73I agree with you about the booing of the powerplay...that was bad. I can understand booing if your team completly doesn't show up but that wasn't the case. It was a great game and could have gone either way. I was glad to see them turn it around and respect the job their team did at the end. I hope they now give the Hurricanes credit for being a great team. The Bruins didn't lose the series, the Hurricanes won it!!!
Excitement & Class
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 06:37 — SkylinerCan it get more exciting? And didn't we all appreciate the class demonstrated by Mark Recchi when he embraced Cam Ward at the end as well as the post-game handshake between Ward and Tim Thomas. Mr. Thomas surely must have been hurting inside, but he smiled and extended congratulations... two great warriors acknowledging the talent of the other. Also, Claude Julian stood tall when a reporter made a feckless attempt to lure him into saying something negative about Scott Walker, as did Paul maurice when he refused to take credit for strategies that helped the Hurricanes win. No chest beating or "I'm the man" here, just men of class demonstrating their poise by doing nothing more than being themselves. As for Scott Waker's tears, he didn't give himself those tear ducts; they are there for a reason...let 'em flow Scotty, this has been a tough year for you. Now, we've got more hockey to look forward to people!!!Let's trust Carolina continues to play the Phoenix role and rises to any occasion. Now I want to see the Hurricanes ownership/management do the right thing regardless of what happens from here on and extend to Paul Maurice a long-term contract and maybe even a very large bouns for his contributions this season. To paraphrase what Mel Allen used to say about the Yankees, "How 'bout 'them' Hurricanes?"
Cool the Commets
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 05:17 — greensborogeezerWhat a great win for Carolina. Let's cool some of the comments. As a New Eng lander for my first twenty years and a Carolina resident for the past 60 years, I have learned to admire how respectful folks here can be.
Pride
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 01:39 — mdavidhallI am so proud of this team and all that they have overcome this year. They just bounce back off the mat again and again. I have been amazed again and again.
Scott Walker. What can you say? That guy deserved that goal so much it's silly.
What a game. What a series.
Bring on the Pens.
Proud to be a Hurricanes fan tonight.

Easy now
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 00:42 — DenovoinncUs Canes fans have to win with class. Having attended game 6 vs. Boston and seeing them play half a dozen times before, and attending games in both the old Garden and new Garden, I must say that Boston fans are probably the best fans out there, except for, of course, Canes fans. They were not rude (like the obnoxious Buffalo alcoholics) and they are very hockey wise. Keep in mind, the same can't be said for their sportswriters. Years of frustration and a combative northern attitude get in the way of good objective journalism.I never really understood the whole "Hockey Gods" thing until this year, with this team. Everything was pointing to a Boston win tonight, even after clearly outplaying Boston. You had to think that wasted chances spell doom. But not with this Canes team. They are like the Energizer Bunny. I truly don't think they have a pulse sometimes (which is a good thing). And with Walker scoring the game 7 winner, how can there not be Hockey Gods? And ESPN? They still can't get over Raleigh (of all places!) stealing their home team. They have become somewhat irrelevant in the world of real sports TV, sort of like MTV has become with music. Versus is ahead of the curve (but I wish they wouldn't obscure the top 1/2 of the screen like they do.And here's praying the Pens are "heavily" favored. We wouldn't want it any other way.
"To be the Best...
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 00:30 — AllenH...you have to Beat the Best" - Richard Flehr
(AKA Rick Flair)
Boston fans stayed and applauded their team who gave them a great season.
ESPN predictions-hot off the press
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 00:07 — AN0NYM0USMatthew Barnaby from ESPN picked the Pens over the Canes--"they (the Pens) will be 'heavily favored'." ESPN devotes so little airtime to hockey--all you see is dunk after dunk in the NBA. With their minimal NHL coverage, you'd think they'd at least get someone who knows what he's talking about. I think Matthew took one shot too many.
And not only that...
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 13:19 — MichaelProctonBut he was quite certain that the Hurricanes were "the team Pittsburgh wanted to see in the conference finals." Seems pretty dumb to me. I'd rather take a team that couldn't handle us over seven games in spite of home-ice advantage.
ESPN Is Garbage
Fri, 05/15/2009 - 00:41 — FurbishLousewartThat's one of the reasons I stopped watching ESPN completely a few years ago. Not due to lack of NHL cover explicitly; just because of the way they operate.
Well I don't want to dwell on things I hate let's get back to that victory! GO CANES!

Aaron will get his tonight...I for one and hope others join me will wear out the Boston Globe when we win just like you Baston a**holes do on here.
The Bruins played a great
Thu, 05/14/2009 - 23:29 — mjjunkThe Bruins played a great series, but the Canes played better. The Pens should be a cake walk after beating the No. One and Three seeds.
Far from it
Thu, 05/14/2009 - 23:38 — Canesfan1287The Pens will be far from a cake walk. Any team with Crosby and Malkin (21 and 19 points respectively) on it can never be considered a cake walk. They gained lots of experience last year and it showed in the series against Washington. They have an outstanding (albeit streaky) goalie in Fleury. And strong defense in the form of Orpik, Gonchar, Scuderi, and Eaton (Eaton, Scuderi and Orpik have combined to block 89 shots through 13 games). Also, if the officiating is half as bad, they have a formidable powerplay clicking at 19.4%. In otherwords, they are to talent loaded to not score on the power play if they are given multiple chances.
Go Canes!! It should be a great series!!

Good Riddance Bruins fans...
Thu, 05/14/2009 - 23:15 — gmwannabeeJust because you are all up North, does not mean you get a free pass to the conference finals. Your team was the top seed and lost. Go yell at the yankee fans now. We may have rednecks down here...but I seen plenty of trolls in the garden.
What a game. What Boston did during the season against us meant nothing. What they did in games 5 and 6 made us play better than they did when it mattered most.
Great job Hurricanes..4 wins away from the finals.
Forbid the Woo!!
Thu, 05/14/2009 - 23:12 — odictamisI forbid the the Boston Press Announcer to ever utter the words Woo!! into his mic again! Ric Flair endorses the Canes!!

Now, on to the Bruins fans who came on here, talk an unbelievable amount of crap, and acting so smug and so confidant. You deserve this loss SO MUCH. You. Deserve. It. Game 7!! If not for that OT loss there would be none. That was the only game I was on edge of seat, others were decided earlier in games.
OT would be fitting.
Just hope the refs do not decide the game. No matter the outcome, looking forward to trip to Hockey Hall of Fame this summer and seeing either team engraved on the Holy Grail......
Best thing about hockey is the tradition. The handshake at end of series is unique to hockey and is examplary of what sports should be.
Enjoy the game. I'll be watching with Fitzy, Sully, Dots, Mac, Obie and Taz
