RALEIGH — The Carolina Hurricanes' overtime hero, Jussi Jokinen, scored yet another big game-winning goal. Jokinen's goal gave the Canes a 3-2 overtime win and a 2-1 series lead.

Sergei Samsonov's shot from the right circle hit Tuomo Ruutu in front of the net and Jokinen was there to score the winner off the deflection only 2:48 into overtime.

"That was a great play by (Samsonov)," Jokinen said. "When he moves, he's at his best and [he] moved the puck to the net hard.

"Sammy got a good shot and I was able to spin out of my defenseman. I didn't get a lot on my rebound shot but I got enough. Big goal for our team and a big win."

The goal came after a frantic first couple of minutes, in which the Bruins managed four shots and had some good opportunities.

"I was concerned enough that if we had another one of those shifts I would've taken my time out," said Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice. "But, we didn't."

That's because as soon as the Hurricanes got the puck deep, they scored.

"We don't call any plays on the bench," said Maurice. "That's all feel. It's the players on the ice. ... Ruutu and Jokinen do have some chemistry together. (Ruutu) knows that on that line his job is to get to the net as hard as he can. I though (Samsonov) has had a really good series. He really has skated well and driven down and used that agility that he has to make plays. It's been very good."

Bruins coach Claude Julien said his team didn't deserve to win.

"We had some great chances," said Julien. "You know, there's such a thing that they call hockey gods. Sometimes they'll give the breaks to th eteam that deserves it. Tonight, unfortunately, we didn't really deserve this game the way we played."

#####

At 9:03 in the third period, Boston forward Mark Recchi tied the game at 2-2, after Chuck Kobasew’s shot from the right circle touched Recchi on the way in.

It was Recchi’s first goal of the postseason and defenseman Steve Montador was also credited with an assist, after passing to Kobasew. …

Just like that, the Hurricanes scored a pair of quick goals near the end of the second period to take a 2-1 lead over the Boston Bruins.

First, Carolina center Eric Staal scored an unassisted backhander after the Erik Cole chipped the puck to the boards behind the crease. Staal scored the power play goal at 16:49 to even the score.

Only 1:09 later, the Hurricanes took the lead. Carolina forward Jussi Jokinen collected the pick after Boston center Phil Kessel fell in the neutral zone. He passed to Scott Walker, who took to the right wing before centering a pass to Sergei Samsonov.

Samsonov fired the past Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas at 17:58.

The period ended with a four-on-four. First, Carolina defenseman Niclas Wallin was called for a two-minute boarding penalty after sending Boston center Stephane Yelle head first into the boards at 19:21.

Then Marc Savard was called for goalie interference at 19:56 after knocking over Cam Ward.

The Hurricanes have a 27-15 shots on goal advantage after two periods. …

At times in the first period, the Bruins outskated the Hurricanes.

Carolina still had more scoring chances than their opponents and outshot them 12-8 in the period. The Hurricanes failed to convert the only power play of the first period, though they had their chances there, too. ...

Boston forward Milan Lucic has notched the game’s first goal at 8:43 in the first period.

Lucic collected the rebound of defenseman Dennis Wideman’s shot from the right wing. Ward deflected the shot but was pulled out of position, allowing Lucic to score his first goal of the postseason.

The Boston Bruins, who finished the season with the best record in the Eastern Conference, are smarting from the Carolina Hurricanes' 3-0 win in Boston on Sunday.

The series, tied at 1-1, moves to the RBC Center for two games starting with tonight's Eastern Conference semifinals game 3. ...

The Hurricanes successfully had the Bruins guessing and missing on their lines. Here are the lines, which bear little resemblance to the lines scribbled on the Bruins' whiteboard earlier today:

Whitney-Staal-Cole

LaRose-Cullen-Walker

Samsonov-Jokinen-Ruutu

Bayda-Brind'Amour-Eaves

The defensive lines haven't changed, and now that the starting lines have been released, it's no surprise that Boston defensive big man Zdeno Chara will continue to play opposite Staal. ...

Dwight Helminen, Tim Conboy and Frank Kaberle are the Canes' healhty scratches.

Tripp Tracy

Needs to have his Contacts with the NHL officiating squad come and watch some of the " fishy" officiating that wasn't...but i do have to admit both He & Forslund had it right when they said at least they are allowing the " boys to play" ...now grant you some of the obvious fouls should have been called on both sides...but the ones that " normally" would have been called but ignored, as in too close to call...well Tripp & John did have a point.
Go Canes !!

ferrance

any body heard anything on his injury

LaRose......

was all over the place again last night and my wife and were loving it. When Chara had the puck and LaRose skated behind him and stole it away from him...well, all we could think of was David and Golieth. Rosey rocks and so does the RBC Center.

And folks, again, please quit already with the old and tiring NHL doesn't want the Canes to win, especially after they win. It just helps fuel the notion that we are a bunch of hicks that know nothing about the sport. Especially after we dominate a game like we did last night.

GO CANES!!!!!!

Highlights

I just went to watch the highlights on the Canes web site. Could the NHL not have put the Canes feed as opposed to the Boston feed? Watching their highlights made in look like a completely different game.

Do you actually watch the

Do you actually watch the game Javier? Staal's goal was on a wrist shot, not a backhander as you described it. There is a huge difference, I would be more than happy to do your job if you don't understand hockey any better. Recently you called Whitney's goal in Game 6 (against NJ) as a shot off of a tape to tape pass from Staal. In actuality he knocked the puck out of the air. It's really not that difficult to understand the difference.

Canes looked great tonight. Ward was the difference in the opening minutes of the overtime. Abramsdoug I couldn't agree with you more. The officiating is horrific. Wallin was guilty of boarding, but at the least they could be consistent. I can specifically remember Chara practically bodyslamming Ruutu from behind and then sitting on him. Or Ward crosschecking Ruutu after the play (when Ruutu earned the tripping penalty). Apparently, it has come down from the top that the B's are to be given the benefit of the doubt. As Chara and Ward (along with other of the B's) are allowed to get away with whatever they want.

Speaking of Chara does anyone know if Staal got his wallet back yet?? I'm thinking Chara took that and possibly committed a sex crime on Staal back in game 2 in the corner.

Jussi " The Juice" Jokinen

And his line came through once again...even Chad LaRose had some shots on goal as did several other players tonight. Was glad and very pleased that the canes did pull this game out, as my only complaint was : While some players were on the net but not very often. Can anyone imagine what the score could have been if the Canes had a few more players parked at the net more often than they did with all the rebounds that thomas was giving up ? Other than that...I am happy as a clam that the Canes won & no one in the tirangle or Triad got hurt or had property damage with all the storms that went through. And my black 7 White TV worked good...i had no problem with it or my HD TV...it all looked great...

Go Canes !!!

Dominance

In the past two games, excluding the third period of game 2, the 'Canes have dominated the play. They are showing that Boston is beatable.

Not much else to say. I love our forecheck right now. They have learned how to play against Chara: dump the puck into his corner, make him play it, and send in Cole to get physical.

The worst thing about this game? The officiating. There was missed calls both way, I know. But they were just too inconsistent. Chara gets away with multiple infractions behind the play. Bayda almost smashes his head open on the open bench door, and only two minutes? I think that is a situation deserving four. That could have been really bad. And then Wallin gets called for boarding. Yes, it was boarding. But Chara had been doing that too. Away from the play.

Anyway, we won. Crowd was amazing again. I would hate to be one of the Boston fans walking out of our arena today.

Oh, and shark jumper fellow, how is your team's superior system doing now? Boston fans seem to be a bit too overconfident.

Officiating and the Lack Thereof

The officiating tonight was as poor as one could imagine. From where I was sitting, it was amazing how many times Boston was grabbing players in plain view without any penalty being called. Then to have Wallin called for boarding when Chara was given free reign to obstruct and hold, was a joke. Fortunately, the Hurricanes have the mental resiliency to ignore the officials and are able to play to win.

Picture

N&O,
Love the celebration picture with Jokinen and Samsanov and the Bruins fan in the background, you made my day.

Jussi

What a huge pickup Jokinen has been. Clutch performance by him this entire postseason, I am sure his father is watching down from above, so proud of what his son has been doing in these playoffs.

Shoot, Shoot, Shoot

Keep the B's to 2 goals or less and put at least 35 shots on Thomas and I like our chances is what my keys were to this game. Simplify the game, everything else falls into place. We'll see a very desperate B's team on Friday, we need to get on them early and often. First 10 minutes will be very important, they feel they're the better team, their record suggests so, we need to prove otherwise.

Ouch

I hold my breath when I see Chara out there.
Granted, he has his assets, but more liabilities.
See the circle on the ice, that's from Chara doing 360s.
Bruins can win next 2

OH YEAH BABY!!!!

THE "JUICE" IS LOOSE!!!! WAY TO GO CANES!!!! WASH, RINSE, REPEAT ON FRIDAY!!!! WOOOO! WO-WO-WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Bruins

Boston Bruins will take tonight's game. I see a 5 - 3 Bruins win.

BOSTON SUCKS!  BOSTON SUCKS!   BOSTON SUCKS!  BOSTON SUCKS!   BOSTON SUCKS!

I am tooo amped up to

care if I'm replying to some bot, but WHATEVER DUDE!! Typical Boston OVERCONFIDENCE. I don't care what the Bruins throw out in the third. Give me 20 more minutes like that from the Canes and all of Raleigh will be happy.

Patience. Persistance. Belief. These are the intangibles gleaned ONLY from prior playoff success. Regular season means squat. C'Mon Canes. Give us 20 more minutes. We believe in you. But more important, you believe in yourselves.

THIS is HURRICANES HOCKEY!!! MY VOICE IS ALREADY GONE, AND I'M WATCHING THE DAMN GAME BY MYSELF!!!

Not a perfect period by any means

but not too shabby. Canes came out with good energy. Now is when they need to utilize their patience and experience. Still trying to make that pass that isn't their outta the d zone. Keep the pressure on and play to the whistle.

Also, I think we are very lucky to have such classy announcers in Forslund and Tracey, Tracy, or well. Tripp. Not only do they know the game of hockey, but they are very balanced and unbiased in the commentary. It really gives you both sides of the story and helps you really understand the dynamic between our Canes and the opponenent. The don't just "homer" it up.

The RBC is rocking pretty good, but I think they could kick it up a level. Next goal is huge...

Oh Please, Dude!

Put on some sunglasses and watch the damn game!

TV Coverage

Too bad the game isn't on Versus. At least they know how to white-balance the cameras. FSCAR is a joke

It looks fine on my TV...

It looks fine on my TV...

It looks great folsk, I

It looks great folsk, I like it a lot.
