Game 1: Penguins 3, Canes 2

PITTSBURGH — The Carolina Hurricanes have lost the opener of a playoff series.

Then again, they've done that before — twice.

The question now: can the Hurricanes win Game 2, which they have twice before in these Stanley Cup playoffs?

The Pittsburgh Penguins held off the Hurricanes 3-2 Monday in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final at Mellon Arena, bolting to a 2-0 first-period lead and getting a strong game in goal from Marc-Andre Fleury.

Philippe Boucher's power-play goal at 11:33 of the third period was the winner for the Penguins. Joe Corvo's goal for the Hurricanes with 1:29 left made it 3-2 and Fleury had to make a huge save on a scoring try by Eric Staal with 25.7 seconds left.

After a two-day break, Game 2 is set Thursday night at Mellon Arena. The Hurricanes, in advancing past the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins, dropped the opener in each series but then bounced back to win Game 2 and then the series in seven games.

The Penguins, who blitzed the Washington Capitals 6-2 in Game 7 of their fierce conference semifinal series, came out with plenty of jump for the opener of the conference final.

Miroslav Satan and Evgeni Malkin scored goals in the first 10:41 for a 2-0 lead — Satan on a breakaway and Malkin with a wicked backhander from the slot that Canes goalie Cam Ward couldn't stop.

But after the Pens' big early push, the Hurricanes kept their composure, settled into their game and made a game of it. Chad LaRose made it 2-1 with 6:56 left in the second on a well-executed rush that had Matt Cullen pass to Erik Cole, who dropped off a pass to LaRose coming down the right wing for the score.

Cole suffered a leg injury in the third period after a collision with the Pens' Matt Cooke and left the game. The Canes also lost forward Tuomo Ruutu to a lower-body injury in the second.

Much of the pregame focus was on the brother vs brother duel — the Canes' Staal and Pittsburgh's Jordan Staal. The two centers often were on the ice together and Eric Staal's influence on the game negligible against the Pens' checking line until the closing minutes.

Staal, who has nine playoff goals, managed three shots for the game. But the Canes, in turn, limited the offensive chances of the Pens' Sidney Crosby, the leading scorer in the playoffs with 12 goals.

The Canes could have had the early lead had it not been for Fleury's solid work in goal.

The Penguins had two power plays in the first five minutes of the game, but the Hurricanes killed off both while generating the best scoring chance — Cullen and LaRose teaming up on a shorthand rush, only to have Fleury snuff out LaRose's shot.

The Canes then had a power play after a holding penalty on Satan, organized it well and got good shots from Ruutu, Joe Corvo and Joni Pitkanen. But Fleury again made the stops and the Pens quickly struck after the Carolina kill.

Satan jumped out of the penalty box and was off on a breakaway. He faked a forehand, then went backhand on Ward at 9:17 for his first goal of the playoffs.

Eighty-four seconds later, it was 2-0, Pens.

Keeping the puck in the Carolina zone, the Penguins' Philippe Boucher got the puck to Malkin in the slot and he backhanded a shot that fluttered through the air and over Ward's left shoulder.

It was the kind of stop Ward has routinely made during the playoffs, but he couldn't stop Malkin's shot and Mellon Arena was rumbling.

With Ruutu out, Canes coach Paul Maurice moved up Rod Brind'Amour to center the line, with Jussi Jokinen moving from center to the wing opposite Sergei Samsonov.

Ward made some sparkling stops in the second to keep it a 2-0 game before LaRose's goal. Ward gloved a bullet from the slot by Bill Guerin, then denied Tyler Kennedy on a breakaway, much to the dismay of Penguins fans.

A little more than two minutes after LaRose's goal, his third of the playoffs, the Canes had a goal disallowed and Cole called for interference when he bumped defenseman Hall Gill into Fleury.

Defenseman Sergei Gonchar, who injured a knee in the conference semifinal series against Washington, was in the lineup for the opener. Gonchar played Game 7 against the Caps, but his availability for Game 1 against the Canes was uncertain until just before game time.

Maurice again made defenseman Anton Babchuk a healthy scratch and went with veteran Frantisek Kaberle. Babchuk had the overtime winner when Carolina topped the Penguins 3-2 on April 4 to clinch a playoff spot.

####

A Joe Corvo one-timer on the power play cut the Penguins lead to 3-2 with 86 seconds left in the game.

The Hurricanes had a couple of chances to tie the game, but Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury stopped Eric Staal’s back-door attempt and the Penguins hung on to win Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Mellon Arena Monday. …

Pittsburgh's Philippe Boucher has given the Penguins a 3-1 lead past the mid-way mark of the third period.

His shot trickled past Carolina goalie Cam Ward, giving the Pengions their first power play goal of the game. ...

Hurricanes forward Erik Cole has left the game after a knee-to-knee collision in the third period. ...

At 13:04 in the second period, Hurricanes forward Chad LaRose slices Pittsburgh’s lead in half.

LaRose received a pass from Erik Cole and then went to the net and held off before wristing the puck behind Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Just a little more than a minute later and LaRose got the puck past Fleury again, but the goal was called off as Cole was penalized for interfering with Fleury.

Canes forward Tuomo Ruutu left the game with a lower body injury. His return to the game is uncertain. ...

After killing a pair of interference penalties and then having several chances on a power play of their own, the Hurricanes gave up a pair of goals to the Pittsburgh Penguins, who now lead 2-0 at Mellon Arena.

First, the Penguins cleared the puck out of their zone at the end Miroslav Satan’s holding penalty. He got a jump on the Canes blue line and out a backhander past Carolina goalie Cam Ward at 9:17.

Then at 10:41, Evgeni Malkin scored less than a minute and a half later. The two moved down the right side, with Malkin shooting off the pass back from Philippe Boucher.

The Hurricanes had a tough first period. The first couple of minutes, they out-skated the Penguins, but then took their offense out of the game with a pair of penalties, which they killed off impressively. They did a lot right in their first power play of the game, but didn't score and then gave up the breakaway to Malkin. ...

The Canes have taken the ice for Game 1 against the Penguins. Defenseman Anton Babchuk did not come out for the warmup but Frantisek Kaberle did, so that answers the question about whether Babchuk would continue to be a scratch.

While Canes coach Paul Maurice has been known to disguise his lines in pregame (ask the Bruins), here's what they look like:

Whitney-Staal-Walker

LaRose-Cullen-Cole

Samsonov-Jokinen-Ruutu

Bayda-Brind'Amour-Eaves

The starting lineup has been announced and Walker is staying on Staal's line. ...

Great game... Going to be a great series!

Both teams are fast and skilled. Goalies WILL determine the outcome. That was pretty good hockey. I can easily see this going 6 or 7 and going either way. God I love hockey!!!!
@WOOOOOOOOOOO: Is English your second language or are you 7? Nice unintelligible post. Crosby did only have the primary assist on the game winner, and if not for a superb stop by Ward (which was outstanding), set Guerin up for a gimme. But if you think he's done, he must be.

Crosby

I don't understand all the Crosby disdain that goes on in some blogs.  Crosby is an amazing hockey player.  He's very mature for his age and does a great job representing hockey and the NHL.  I could use a little less of Versus wanting to canonize Crosby, but certainly Crosby can't be blamed because some commentators worship the ground upon which he treads.

Crosby

Either you love him or hate him.  It was the same thing when Gretzky emerged...sounds like pretty good company to me!  One thing is for sure...he is an amazing hockey player!  Anyone who disputes that has no idea what they are talking about.

This series needs some more intensity.  Maybe the Ruutu and Cole injuries will help bring that aspect.  I was really impressed with Fleury last night.  After Carolina killed those two penalties in the first and were pouring it on, Fleury stood on his head.  That would have been an entirely different game if not for those saves in the first.  I've never been a big Fleury fan but he looked good last night.

I agree with all your points, Canes73.

It's only game 1, but we need a little more sandpaper in this series. Players like LaRose, Bayda, and Eaves could be the difference since they tend to get under the skin of the opponent. They will need to step that up this series.

As for Fleury, again i agree, he looked great last night. But he has a tendancy to be streaky, so it's important to keep peppering him with shots and crowding the net.

The better team lost in my

The better team lost in my opinion but Fleury outplayed Ward in that first decisive period.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!
SIDNEY GIRLY FACED CROSBY GOT NUTTIN !

HES DONE !!!!! STICK A FORK IN THAT BOY HES FINISHED !!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

S'ok

I don't mind Pens fans coming on here to comment. I like most of you better than some other club's fans. But just to remind you, both the Devils and Bruins fans thought we would be down in 4. Don't underestimate us. I could complain about bad calls (and announcers on Versus) but hopefully there will be a game or two where Pittsburgh can complain about the refs. This is a good match. I have a feeling I will enjoy this series the most, and in fact have been awaiting it as I am a former Pens fan myself.

Go Canes!!

Ok, thanks for proving me wrong

I'm starting to think your decent fans are actually the minority. Wow, now I feel bad for putting down Philly, because they have nothing on you guys. Cole hit Orpik from behind in tonights game, same exact kind of hit. Had Orpik been injured you would be celebrating. You scored a goal late that made the game closer than it should have been on a blatant no call, but the refs cost you that game. Ok. I now hope the Pens sweep. Go Pens! Have fun crying the night away folks.

Brooks Orpik is simply

Aaron Ward Jr. He plays in the "gray area" between physical and cheap but he is not "tough." Same hit? You can't be talking about the big hit Cole laid on Orpik, must be another dirty hit that me, the refs, the annouoncers, and everyone else watching the game missed. If it was the same hit, Orpik would've been injured.

No one here, well, no decent fans here, want to see ANY player on either side get hurt. But if it happens due to CLEAN, physical play, well, it's an occupational hazard and i can live with it. If it's due to a BLATANT knee-to-knee hit (Cooke, Ovechkin on Gonchar) or a dirty hit-from-behind (Orpik in 06') then it just shows the true colors of your hockey team. I said it during the Boston Series, and it still applies here: if the Canes have to resort to chepa shots and dirty play to win, I'd rather lose.

And while I'm at it-no one's crying the night away. We lost game 1 of each of the first 2 rounds. But here we are. I welcome your overconfidence and can only hope your team shares with you in it. Ask Boston and NJ how it worked winning Game 1.

Same kind of hit??

Go back and review those two hits... Coles hit last night was good and hard, into the back wall as Orpik turned away.  Orpik's hit in '06 was a run at a guy that clearly had his back turned, and in a vulnerable position.

You really don't want to take this argument up here and now, do you?

No Worries!

We looked better than we did in Game One of either of the first two series this year. Fleury can be had and our Canes will do it. Now if we can just get the league to call things both ways . . .

Whoops we did

Yep we did it again ! Meaning and while it was a good game for both teams, i feel the call against Cole was bogus, but them are the rules. Chad LaRose seemed to take it in stride.
The canes still could have tied the game at 2 or even 3 all, and went into overtime, but we let game 1 get away. Both teams let their guard down several times during the 2nd & 3rd periods...So over all it was a good game but not a great one.

Go Canes !!!

Officiating and Life in the NHL; Lost Opportunities

It was pretty much as expected with the officiating.  A complete lack of consistency and miraculously suddenly the least penalized team in the NHL is having phantom penalties called.  Still, the officiating did not decide the game as much as the lost opportunities by the Hurricanes.  If LaRose lifts a couple of shots, Hurricane win.  If Staal hits the open net at the end,  we probably win.  The non-calls on two knee to knee contacts are dubious at best.  Within our household, we have a debate on the Cole penalty, so I can't say it's irrefutably incorrect (although I think personally it's a bogus call).  The Pens are the real deal.  Excellent team that stakes hard and has skill on every line.  I do dislike Orpik and look forward to him receiving some Gleason clean but mind-rattling hits.

Well, for the most part

After reading through these comments I need to clarify that my respect is for most of your fan base. You do have a few whiners among you, must be transplants from Philly. Was there such an uproar when your player was not suspended? I also think you guys are a little hard on Orpik, though I understand why. He hits hard but watch him all season and you will see that his hits are generally clean, especially for such a physical defenseman.

But you've got to realize...

When a player committs a blatant check from behind and breaks a guy's neck (!!!), people are going to be mad.  Combine that with the fact that Orpik missed 3 games to Colesie's 45, and we're not going to get over it.

Sorry

On behalf of civilized Pens fans I apoligize for engineer comments. I'm glad to see fellow hockey fans with such passion for such a great game. We are not all like him, just the bored Steeler fans among us. I still feel this will be a great series, a long series and the more fans who share the passion for this great game the better. I respect your fan base and feel it has presented itself better than some "traditional" hockey markets.

Brutal officiating and Knee on Knee hits

I thought maybe we were through with dirty Hockey...guess not...two of top six forwards take out by knee on knee and leg whip..Orpik tried of the trifector with an elbow attempt to Walkers head...guess Bylsma will have to spend some extra time with him he missed

1 Down 3 to Go - Pens Superior

Enjoyed the ride...time to start thinking about golf boys. Time for the 35% of the roster who are Canadian to leave the Royal Bank of Canada Center and head north.

The Canes were lucky, pure and simple, to make it past the Bruins. The Bruins put up a half-hearted effort and managed to take the Canes to 7 games. The Penguins are hungry. Welcome to the real playoff world.

Cheap shot artists such as Walker, Jokinen, and LaRose have lost my repect! Walker's sucker punch against Ward made a mockery of the NHL.

Two more losing seasons and the Canes fans can join the likes of the Coyotes and Predators. Too many short-lived band wagon fans that have little to no hockey IQ. Just look at the attendance after the 2006 season...sad.

The luck just like their stamina has run out.

Good to have you back...

JumptheShark.

I was thinking

the same thing!

two knee to knee hits

not good.

Seriously?

Come on guys, we heard enough about the refs from Philly and Washington, I thought you guys had more class. The interferance call was not bogus because it was called because he hit a player away from the puck, interferance it was and that is what was called, they did not call goalie interferance. As a side note Staal was not called for goalie interferance when he should have been, I'm not complaining, but it is what it is. Actually a lot of things were let go on both sides and neither team had a real advantage because of refs. Great game between two great teams, coulda gone either way, and should be a long series.

seriously???? Really???

3 touch calls in in first 6 mins two on Canes one on Pitt then they allow blatant interfernce, holding you name it, leg whipping, knee on knee...simply unbelievable.

Larose's disallowed goal

Can someone explain to me why Larose's second goal was disallowed when Cole ran into their defender outside of the crease and their defender splayed into Fleury? Was that bogus? The Versus announcers barely commented on it.

yeah...

The fact that the whistle blew before the shot even went in the net didn't bode well for the goal regardless. But the call as I saw it was that Cole, in crashing, intentionally drove the defenseman into Fleury thus interfering. I don't know whether that was the case though, because the VS guys were obsessing over the non-goal more than the interference call. Would have been nice to see more analysis/replay of that.

It was a weird game tonight. I find that I really don't mind Pittsburgh like I do some other teams we've played recently. I thought we played well on Defense, shutting down Crosby for the most part. Those guys are sharks, and it could easily turn into a bloodbath with a team like Pitt. Good job Corvo. Malkin, of course, will be dangerous. They have some real talent over there, and the speed is such a great match for us. It's funny how both teams tacitly agreed not to play a hitting game and just skate and pass. My only fear is that the Pens at their best will out-Canes the Canes.

Ya know?

I actually kind of like Crosby. But O-Pr*ck? He's proof that you can actually anthropomorphize and animate fecal matter.

Wow...

Pittsburgh manages to take out our top two right wingers, yet they somehow manage to rack up ONE penalty in the first 56 minutes. Looks like we'll be playing against more than just the Pens. Still, though, we won the last 50 minutes of that hockey game.

Ruutu

Chip, are you hearing anything else about Ruutu's status?
