A few thoughts after another week observing at the RecZone:
Joni Pitkanen is listed at 6-3 and 215 pounds but looks bigger. The defenseman has broad shoulders and a big frame. He's a smooth skater and does move the puck well.
Questions about Rod Brind'Amour coming off the knee injury? Forget it. He's his old snorting self, barreling around the ice with that wide-eyed intensity and controlling the puck.
You never know how things will unfold, but defenseman Dennis Seidenberg appears really fit physically and is a hustler. He really gets after it.
Ray Whitney and Chad LaRose are always entertaining, even in the informal five-on-five games. Always needling, always with a quick quip. Always fiesty.
No Brandon Sutter sighting yet. It's too bad he couldn't come in early like a Casey Borer, Michael Leighton or Brett Carson and gotten extra time with the veterans.
With Bret Hedican gone, Tim Gleason will now wear No. 6, Hedican's old number. Still seems strange not having either Hedican or Glen Wesley around. As Gleason put it, "I miss those boys."
Eric Staal came to the RecZone today about $58 million richer than he was Thursday morning. You don't think that earned him some teasing, do you?
Justin Williams and Brind'Amour work so well together. Always in sync. Then add Whitney ...
Goaltending coach Tom Barrasso has put in a lot of work with Cam Ward and Leighton after some of the workouts. Both seem to be good, patient listeners.
Still no sign of Sergei Samsonov. Maybe Monday.
UPDATE: Oops. My bad. Sutter has been playing preseason exhibition games
with the Red Deer Rebels and will report next week for training camp.
Matt Cullen is due in Monday.

08-09
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 07:18 — canes26First as you can "see" by my my username I'm an Erik Cole Fan.... I have been since his first season. Thus.... Yes, I have a bias.
My FIRST worry for this season NO Cole.
My second worry Eric Staal's output with a BIG contract and no Cole making opportunities for a goal.
My third worry the SE keeps getting better (also a positive with regard to NHL respect).... The Caps will be good and the Panthers will be better..... The SE is no cake walk.
Fourth I'm doubtful if WE got better.
Fifth I very MUCH respect Jim Rutherford's decisions, thus a positive.
Sixth; Brindy another positive.
I will PULL for Erik Cole to have a BIG year unless it's against Our Canes. I will pull all season long for Our Canes! Always have since the move to Greensboro and always will as long as I have breath.
Go Canes!
Cole is history.

I'm sorry, but Erik Cole is
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 13:52 — acidqueenI'm sorry, but Erik Cole is not going to be what makes or breaks this team. This team had good seasons without him (in Hartford, for example) just as much as they had good seasons with him.
GLEASON
Sat, 09/13/2008 - 12:24 — Anonymous (not verified)wow Tim Gleason looks much bigger then last year well lets just hoping he can move it around and be an offensive defenseman. He should be better this year he was good last year so we will see
Gleason needs to be our top
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 06:47 — FuquayCaniacGleason needs to be our top shutdown D-Man. We have offensive D-men with Corvo, Pitkanen, and Kaberle (at least for now).
Chip, Any idea where the
Sat, 09/13/2008 - 11:03 — Anonymous (not verified)Chip,
Any idea where the other guys are? I know Cullen is at home with the fam but how about Ruutu, Brookbank, Melichar?
Cullen
Fri, 09/12/2008 - 23:45 — Anonymous (not verified)Has Matty Cullen showed up yet? I'm worried about him and how well he can recover.
Cullen
Sat, 09/13/2008 - 05:36 — JRs_FaultMy guess is he's spending as much time with the new baby as he can before coming in. Can't say I blame him.
Where's Cullen? I'm still

hope they work hard.
Fri, 09/12/2008 - 23:08 — Salim (not verified)hope they work hard.
Barrasso a great addition...
Fri, 09/12/2008 - 23:07 — Bill Bailey (not verified)I was listening to a Canes podcast a while back and Cam Ward was talking about how Barrasso was already showing how the simple things count and was advising on certain adjustments to positioning. I think the Canes made a great move when they brought Barrasso in and hopefully it will show with the goalies.
Sutter
Fri, 09/12/2008 - 22:25 — bu11durmSutter is with his junior team playing in some exhibitions in Red Deer, isn't he? should be here soon.
That's why Sutter's case is different than Borer, Carson, Leighton.
