Forslund on: Game 4

FS Carolinas broadcaster John Forslund has been sharing his thoughts with Canes Now during the conference finals. Here's his Tuesday morning installment:

Here's is one phrase you would like to hear coming out of the Hurricane dressing room that could be uttered louder than most as they face elimination for the first time in this series. It would be "it's time we worry about what we do and not what the other side does." Indirectly they have said it. But no one seems to come right out and elimnate Pittsburgh totally out of the equation when explaining what has gone wrong.. It's hard when Mrrs. Malkin and Crosby have been displaying why they are possibly one/two in the world of fellas who get paid to do this.

For the Hurricanes this adage could have been applied after game one. The first game appears to be their best. Within that game they did many of the "simple" things they want now. In that game they committed mistakes which should have been corrected to put them in a better position. But as game two unfolded maybe that's where the series unraveled. The Canes came out of the gate with two great shifts. They didn't score but applied sound pressure. The Pens scored on the game's third shift and then Hurricanes did the same on the next one. Maybe it's a reach, but appears that's when the Hurricanes decided to open up the ice and trade chances with Pittsburgh. Probably a subconscious decision but nonetheless it happened. That's when the preoccupation with the opponents started. They began to ask themselves how do we shut this down as opposed to how do we re-focus our game.

There is one more chance. The Hurricanes must adapt the way THEY play and how THEY want to do it. Crosby and Malikin will still be a great as ever. That was the case on April 4th when the Hurricanes dropped a 3-2 OT decision on the Pens. The Canes were playing their style and so were the Pens. It was a game with speed but the Hurricanes seemed to have it channeled in the right direction.

Is Pittsburgh that good? You can bet your next IC Light on that. The Canes have one more chance to be better in the neutral zone and limit Pittsburgh rush speed. One more chance to make a safe, secure exit pass from their zone. One more chance to adjust their game and dictate the pace they want to play at. One more chance to be tougher on the puck. One more chance to be positionally sound in the defensive zone.

The Hurricanes are playing on May 26th because of how THEY have played. The Pens will be better than ever in attempt to close out. For the Hurricanes nothing has changed from what was said at the start of this series. To beat this team is has to be completely fundamentally sound from the goal out. To be fundamentally sound it starts with how they approach their OWN game. Here's your last chance.

Enjoy.

Game 4

John, as usual ... great commentary and insight.

No doubt about it, Pittsburgh IS that good. Right at this moment, they have obviously shown they're better than the Canes, and arguably are showing they should be the 1st seed against the West, assuming of course the Canes don't pull off a miracle.

Our fellas have played their hearts out I think, only to have them broken by a few bad plays, some missed opportunities and the occasional brain fart. All of those happen all season long, and for long stretches since the winter, they avoided all of those for the most part, and when they did occur, there was enough time left that it wasn't "the end". This series, and obviously tonite and the next three games after that, should they be necessary, is the worse time for these downers.

We're all hoping, and a lot of us Caniacs believing that there's yet another miracle or three or four, another back-from-the-brink recovery from what seems to be Cardiac arrest, another opportunity to picnic at the world reknown RBC Park :-) with what has to be the greatest and most loyal fan base in hockey today.

Regardless, it's been a GREAT run, GREAT fun, GREAT organization, players, fans, and I have to say, broadcasters!

John ... you and Tripp are (and I've watched a lot of out of town games this year courtesy of Center Ice) the cream of the crop when it comes to television broadcasters for the NHL. Mike on TheFan has shown he's got what it takes. Chuck is ... just Chuck. No more needs be said about Chuck.

If tonight's our swan song ... thank you FANS, PLAYERS, MANAGEMENT, BROADCASTERS, the folks at The Eye, my friends at Guest Services, the parking lot attendants to whom I've given a lot of grief and the concession workers to whom I've given a lot of money. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you, and even more, come September.

If tonight's NOT our swan song ... the same thank you's, and more. If tonight's NOT our swan song, let's hope we've got at least one more home game left on Sunday, and let's cross other bridges when we get to them.

Thank you. All of you. Again, and again.

Well what do you know about that....

You said it. You really, finally, and without gripe or excuse, said the other team has been better.

That a boy. Canes may give them a good game tonight. May even win. May even make something of a series of it yet.

Doubtful they can come back. They'd have to play outside of themselves. But, there's always the outside chance.

By the way, whoever comes out of this is going to have all they can handle with Detroit. They are flat out the best team remaining in terms of size, skill, speed and depth. And their goaltender is a mad man whenever the playoffs come around.

Good luck. The truth has set you free (I stole some of the phrases contained herein, by the way. I hope it's okay with you).

For The Record

For the record, I did not "finally" say it in the post to which you refer.  I said it yesterday, in my first post on this series, and directed towards your concerns that no one here was doing so.

As a service to you, I would like to tel you that you should be aware that the phrase "the truth has set you free" has an ominous similarity to one used by the Third Reich and which could be considered as being at the least mildly offensive to some readers.

Ummm...

"And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free".

The Book Of John (8:32)

That some vile dictator from last century may have perverted this passage is an invalid argument. That your first cognitive association of this passage is to that of a genocidal regime is disturbing. Many twist words and meanings to suit their own agendas (have a look around this site). It's the original author's intention that ultimately matters, that must not be overlooked. The educated among us understand the origin and the intention of that passage.

There is a certain organization that was formed in the Deep South early last century that based its murderous agenda and hateful beliefs upon the idea that Man is not the result of Evolution, as Darwin suggested, but is instead a devine creation of God. With that single and simple yet inflammable idea--one that was easily grasped and quickly derided by the church-going southerners of the time--this organization, through the effective propogation of this misconception, was able to convince a few otherwise normal folks to run around in the night setting crosses ablaze and lynching innocent men, women and children.

Ironically, that behavior goes against much of what the bible teaches, of what these individuals claimed to believe. That behavior is in fact punishable by death and eternal damnation by The Almighty, Himself.

But it wasn't even about the church or Darwin or anything remotely associated to either. That was the great misconception...the great lie. For those vile individuals, it was merely an easy means to a sinister end. There were many who supported this organization in principle. They perhaps didn't go so far as to suit up for the cause. But like gullible children wondering at the artistry of the conjurer who produces from thin air a shinny new coin, they merely marveled at the misconception, accepting it completely, never thinking to peer more closely up the sage's sleeve.

I'm sure this wasn't Darwin's intention when he first published his little black book. But since it was used to incite such hatred, and caused so many to suffer the sins of others, perhaps it should be eradicated in all of its forms.

And for darn sure don't quote it.

So, there you go.

Very Well Said

Our team has given us wonderful moments and many memories.  Thanks for the ride if, in fact, the ride ends tonight.  If the ride doesn't end tonight, we will all be with you every step of the way.  Couldn't be more proud to be a Caniac!
