Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour always pushes himself, whether it's in the weight room or on the ice. But he may have pushed himself a bit too hard in the Friesen 5K Fun Run two weeks ago.
Brind'Amour said today that his left knee began to hurt as he rumbled to the finish line in the annual charity event at the RBC Center.
“That’s when it happened — right in the last 100 meters,” Brind’Amour said. “It was fine for the first 18 minutes of that run. I was feeling great and decided to put a little extra into it at the end. That’s when something kind of went in there."
Two days later, he had surgery for a cartilage tear. It's the same knee that required reconstructive surgery last season, causing him to miss the last 22 games.
Brind'Amour doesn't second-guess participating in the event and said he may have been fortunate to discover the knee needed arthroscopic surgery.
“It’s better to find something then than a couple of weeks down the road,” he said.
