RALEIGH -- The Philadelphia Flyers are still rolling. As for the Carolina Hurricanes ...

Even a blistering locker-room talk from Canes coach Peter Laviolette during the first intermission couldn't prevent a third straight loss as the Flyers won 3-1 Wednesday at the RBC Center for their sixth straight victory.

Matt Carle's goal early in the third gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead and was the winner. Simon Gagne had two goals and an assist, getting an empty-netter at the end.

The Canes mustered just one shot on goal in the opening period and were fortunate to trail 1-0 at the break, with goalie Cam Ward making some big saves.

"Every night seems to be a different set of circumstances," Laviolette said of the losing streak. "Tonight, there clearly was a reason we played the first period like a game of pond hockey.

"They got opportunities and we got nothing. That was the reason tonight. We were just not playing the game with any heart in the first period. The other team wanted to win badly and we did not."

Chad LaRose had the only goal for the Canes, giving Carolina a 1-1 tie after two periods. The Canes had 16 second-period shots and kept pressuring Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki, who got the start in goal and had 27 saves.

"We changed our tune after the first period and competed at a much higher level," Laviolette said. "There really is no excuse for that."

Niittymaki was the winner for the Flyers (11-6-4). Martin Biron, the Flyers' No. 1 goalie, will start Friday at the Wachovia Center. when the two teams play again in Philly.

"Nitty has been playing well for us lately," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "He has the ability to come in and win us games.

"This is a tough game to win here. Carolina has been struggling a little bit (and) they came hard. Nitty stood tall and won us a hockey game."

Carle scored at 2:05 of the third, the second goal of the season for the defenseman, after a Canes turnover in the Flyers' zone.

The teams began the third 4-on-4 after captains Rod Brind'Amour of the Canes and Mike Richards of the Flyers were called for unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of the second. Carolina went on the power play at 1:24, only to have Eric Staal called for hooking seconds into the power play.

Moments after the penalties to Brind'Amour and Richards ended, with the teams again 4-on-4, Flyers defenseman Luca Sbisa knocked away a Dennis Seidenberg pass on a Carolina rush, leading to a Flyers' odd-man rush that ended with Carle beating Ward.

LaRose fired a hard shot at Niittymaki, using Sbisa as a screen, then smacked in the rebound at 1:52 of the second period. LaRose now has goals in three straight games and seven for the season.

"You can throw film out the window. Execution and energy and heart and gritty work get it done," LaRose said.

The Canes lost forward Scott Walker, who suffered a lower-body injury late in the first on a hooking penalty against the Flyers' Andrew Alberts.

The Flyers had a 1-0 lead after the first period on Gagne's easy goal at the end of a power play. With the Canes clustering around the puck in front of Ward, the puck popped free and Gagne, who missed much of last season with a concussion, was all alone at the goal mouth to Ward's left.

"He's a consistent producer right now playing in a lot of key situations," Stevens said. "It's good to see him playing at a high level."

The Canes, who have allowed the first goal in the last eight games, hit the post twice in the first period -- on shots by Anton Babchuk and Walker -- and failed on two power plays.

Carolina was 0-5 on the power play for the game and is 0-17 in the last four games.

Ward has made some nice saves to keep it 1-0 with the Flyers controlling the puck. He stopped Joffrey Lupul on a breakaway and made some stops on a couple of Mike Knuble blasts.

The Canes' Wade Brookbank dropped the gloves and fought the Flyers' Josh Gratton two minutes into the game. Brookbank was the apparent winner. ...

Canes defenseman Frantisek Kaberle, activated from injured reserve today, was a scratch along with defenseman Tim Gleason and forward Patrick Eaves. ...

Maybe not a Lavi issue

The more I watch the more I think the progress this season is not a coaching issue. I think it is a Jim Rutherford issue. This team is just too small/weak overall. When Lavi lets them have it between periods and they come back out with a snarl someone usually gets hurt. Mr. Rutherford did a super job anticipating what type of team would work post-lockout but he didn't keep his eyes and mind open as the small, quick teams that the Canes and Buffalo had post lockout quickly were devoured by bigger yet still fast teams like the Ducks in the next couple of years. This team held fast to small and quick. Now I like Staal. We have seen what he can do when healthy, which by the way he is absolutely not right now. But look at the 2003 draft and see the type of rugged player the team could have drafted. Staal is tall and lanky, but not a rugged type of player. Eric Cole was always hurt. He had to play harder than his body would allow to be effective. And so on.
Some of this can't be blamed on even Mr Rutherford. He is GM of a small market team. He simply doesn't have the money to spend a stronger players with skills. I am okay with that. This IS a small market and I don't blame Mr Karmanos for holding to a budget. Also look at the Canes records, they make the playoffs or usually just miss the playoffs. When you draft in the middle of the round all the players with size/strength and skill are gone. Had the Canes just decided to rebuild the fear would be losing its footing in this non-traditional hockey market. They had to bring in what they could to try and keep making the playoffs.
There is no easy fix either. You can't just tell the GM to go get this guy or that guy. You have to have a willing dance partner and a player someone wants that you can give up.
Now where the GM does get blame is by not drafting well when the good picks do come along, and by not seeing the writing on the wall and getting the team bigger over the course of the years after the Cup was won. Over the course of a few seasons it is much easier to re-tool than in the middle of one season.
This team has skill, and it has speed, and it has a few good rugged players. But based on the overall size/ strength of this club they don't have enough skill and speed to make up for the lack of strength. Can coaching find a system that will accommodate this roster and find some success? Maybe. If you think so than you'll blame coaching. I'm not sure coaching is the issue.

Canes Lose But

The Rats won last night and the Plymouth Whalers won too...hmmm...I also found out the Chad LaRose is an "alum' of the Whalers too !..gee now i see where he got his work effort from...No I wonder if the Jr Canes in Lethbridge will get a win the next time up...only time will tell...huh?

Observations

Was at the game last night and came away with a few observations:

1) What a woeful first period. How can this continue to be such a problem? There was one 5 or 6 minute stretch where the Canes seemingly did not have possession in their own end...AT ALL. It was like half court hockey. Ugh. My only kudos for that first period go to Cam Ward, who was stellar in keeping us in the game when we did not deserve to be, and to Chad LaRose and Ryan Bayda who, though they only got around 4 mins of ice time each, seemed to be the only players on the ice actually interested in playing a hockey game on the NHL level. Brookbank fought, sure, but it didn't seem to do anything to light a fire under his teammates.

2) As much as I hate to say it, Rod Brind A'mour is doing absolutely nothing to help this hockey team right now. And if he can't win faceoffs, he's got nothing to offer. I made a point to watch him closely on the ice all night - no jump, easily pushed off the puck, and at one point he lost 5 straight faceoffs. At the end of the game, with out goalie pulled, he lost 3 straight faceoffs. Minus 2 for the game. Rod has always been one who leads by example, and right now he's seemingly has nothing to give on the ice.

3) Staal was obviously injured early in the game, and though he gutted it out, and did not play particularly poorly, he did not really stand out either. 3 shots on goal in almost 20 minutes of ice time. You need more than that from your best player. If he is hurt, if Brind A'Mour is hurting, we should just sit them down for a game or two in hopes that they get their legs back. Sure, it might put us as a disadvantage, but we are 3-6 over our last 9 with them on the ice. How much worse can it get? Ok. Don't answer that.

4) I thought Ray Whitney played a solid game. He tried to bring energy and physicality (which is not his game btw, but someone has to do it). At least you noticed when he was on the ice, which is more than you can say about most of the other forwards not names LaRose or Bayda. Felt like Ruutu was mostly a non factor last night, which was surprising.

5) Scott Walker's injury really hurt us. Had to break up the lines again and scramble for combinations. Hope it's nothing serious.

6) I'm pretty sure that Carle's goal came on the 3 on 3 Chip, not 4 on 4. Brind A'Mour and Richard came out of the box after he scored.

5) Was pretty neat to see a 3 on 3 though. Cannot remember the last time I've seen that, outside of the rookie all star game.

Overall, very bummed about the loss. About the string of loses. About the overall effort. Not sure what the remedy is.
Just hope that they come up with something soon.

Go Canes.

Happy Thanskgiving.

Please Mr Rutherford

Please Mr Rutherford put us out of our misery. Laviolette has obviously run out of ideas of what to do next. I was also there last night. The PP is embarassing to say the least. The ploy of a defenseman hitting the puck up the boards on the off chance someone gets it is so lame. As for the "new" dump and chase offense....what can you say. We are back to pre-Laviolette mind-numbingly boring hockey and we haven't even got a team that is built to do it. The team and the fans are dying a slow death.
As for the forwards, what can you say. When LaRose is consistently the best player on the team you know something is definitely wrong. Staal and Brind'Amour are non-factors. If they are injured they shouldn't be playing as they are not contributing squat. Samsonov is the fastest player in the NHL at skating in a circle. Somebody remind him that he needs to attack that thing called a goal.
Chip, have you asked Mr Rutherford how he feels lately?

This no morning skate

This no morning skate philosophy needs to be dumped. Every 1st period is just a lackluster effort. We can play our hearts out in the second but by the time the third rolls around it's too much of an uphill battle. Something needs to be done about these slow starts.

Morning Skate

I totally agree with dustinlammers on this.  They are out of their game day routines and don't get going until the end of the 1st period at the earliest.  Even if it is only 30 minutes of 4-on-4 pickup hockey on game day, do it!

Suggestion

Not much left to say about this team, but here's a good topic for Monday's "debate."

"Who is playing worse, Rod Brind'Amour or Eric Staal?"

Discuss.

Who is Playing Worse

"Who is playing worse, Rod Brind'Amour or Eric Staal?"

It's a tie because it isn't possible for key players with a "C" and an "A" on their jersey to play less inspired hockey.  As a test of how badly they are hurting the team,  Lavi could put Samsonov and Ruutu with Sutter for a few shifts in additon to their play on the first line. I predict, they would light up the rink even though Sutter is 19 and in his first year.  Sutter gets it and shows grit and backbone.  Perhaps Brind'Amour and Staal are just so banged up they can't motor.  If so,  Lavi is doing them and the team absolutely no favors in having them out on the ice because in the end the quality of their play isn't measured by how well they play hurt, but instead is measured by how well or poorly they play.  Here are some telling stats over the past five games:

Brind’Amour

0 goals  1 assist   -3

Staal

3 goals (hat trick)  1
assist +5  (1 assist last three games, no
goals)

Ruutu

1 goal  1 assist  -1

Samsonov

1 goal 3 assists +2

Whitney

3 goals 3 assists  +/-
0 (no points last three games)

LaRose

3 goals 3 assists +2

Cullen

1 goal  2 assists  +/- 0

Can Anyone

can Anyone here, and yes Chip you too are included tell "we the fans" or even show us Fans a reason to fill the seats or to keep coming towant to fill what seats we who have them, to even want & desire to even show up ? The only things that have NOT been tried let alone done are : Putting Stormie in a bikini, the cheerleaders in nuns habits, benching what players who don't put out consistantly, or replacing the coach, getting a proven or center who can preform as we need him too...Gee i wonder If Bobby Orr Inc...has any ideas...cause JR and Mr. K sure are silent, and Forslund & Tracy aren't, at least tripp is combing his hair better huh ? And don't worry about cooking any turkey for Thanksgiving, because we had enough from lastnight didn't we ? Maybe the Rats will do better or put on a better show that the canes did...maybe... Happy Thanksgiving Everyone !!! Go Stormie !

SBISA

OH, if ONLY the Canes ever got the opportunity to draft a defenseman like Luca Sbisa! You know, a guy drafted in '08 (that's this past June, kids!) who could've been sent back to junior but played so well the Flyers kept him with the big club. The one whose coach had so much confidence in him he played the 18 yr old rookie on a 3 on 3 - the #3 Star of tonight's game. It's just not fair the way the Canes don't get the chance to draft franchise defensemen the way other teams do!

Wait, what was that...? Philly took him AFTER the Canes picked?? So we DID have the chance to draft Sbisa??? But Rutherford passed on him (and Del Zotto) so we could get...another 5'9" winger.

Well...good thing we don't have to worry about a little thing like the draft, right?! I mean, for SOME organizations - the ones in small markets, with a cheap owner & hardly any fan or media accountability - that could be cause for concern! Good thing the Carolina Hurricanes are a high-profile, well-established, profitable franchise that attracts top free agents, has an unlimited budget & doesn't have to worry about drafting well.

PHEW!!!

It Just Hurts!!!!

Going to the game tonite reminded me of going to the dentist . LaRose, Ruutu, & Cullen are the good stuff to dull the pain! The rest of the game was a major ROOT CANAL!!!In Wardo's defense his teamates through him under the bus on several ocassions!!! PP's UGH! Dump & Chase same old.....same old No one in front of net Good old four corners play....I don't want to shoot it ....here you do it...no not me... you do it...Do you get my point? Please JR Shoot me up with some change ...I'm starting to get numb!!!!!!

dump and chase...

reminds me of Coach Mo's PP...

Losing Streak

I hate to rain on the parade even more...but I can see a 10-game losing streak easy without a change.

We ain't gonna win in Philly, and Ducks, Penguins, Caps, and Rangers coming to town....JR better do something NOW.

Lavi Quote

"They got opportunities and we got nothing. That was the reason tonight. We were just not playing the game with any heart in the first period. The other team wanted to win badly and we did not."

Heart in the FIRST period????? How about all season pal!!!

Heading Down the Tubes Fast in 2008-2009

I was at the game tonight. The effort in the first period was not as horrible as the one shot period might otherwise indicate. Still, the comparison between the first and second period was indeed night and day. I have had to reconcile myself to the fact that the team has lost faith in Lavi; and JR will not make a major change until the team misses the playoffs one more year. Additionally, Staal and Brindy are simply under-performing on the energy and physical side of the game. The forwards aren't perfect, but they are hustling. The third line is doing all anybody can ask of a third line. If Staal and Brindy were carrying their weight, Carolina would be leading the Southeast division. As it is, the Hurricanes lack a big-bodied center who can impose his will on the opponent's defense and take the puck to the net. The season thus far can be summarized as (1) Lavi cannot get the team to play two games in a row at full throttle; (2) the Hurricanes lack a big-bodied center who can carry the puck and score on a power play; and (3) without Staal and Brindy making the defense worry about their offense, there are no shooting lanes to be found. If JR wants to salvage this year and keep Lavi, he will need to talk PK into investing in a center who can run the power play, including taking the puck and scoring while handling the puck. Unless that happens, I predict we can kiss the 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs goodbye.

different night...same power play

When are we going to change this thing up? We keep trotting out the same guys 4-6 times per game and we get nothing 5-on-4 or, heaven forbid, 5-on-3. It's time to shake it up. Put four forwards out like last year. Put Francis in charge of that unit. Put LaRose out there - he's got more even-strength goals than anyone on the team. I don't know the answer, but I know that Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result. We don't need Einstein, just a little coaching.

Frances

Frances over PP?  Put him over the whole team.

 New Head Coach baby.  PLEASE!!!!

Yo JR...Yo Karmanos

Can we PLEASE fire Lavi BEFORE it's too late??????

Yes he won us a cup but what has he done for us lately????

Heck, my kid's 6-year old hockey coach would do a better job....give him a call....he gives minutes to kids who actually try and contribute!!!! He actually knows that you can play in the CENTER of the ice too! Not just cycle and dump-n-chase all night.

Whatever....no more money from me pal. I'll stick with going to B-ball and the Panthers....go back to Hartford.

Once Again...

20 Mins of Whatever It Takes.
40 Mins of Whatever.
