Pat Dwyer, called up by the Hurricanes Saturday from the Albany River Rats to play against Tampa Bay, has been reassigned to the AHL team.

Dwyer was needed with forward Patrick Eaves out with an upper-body injury that Canes coach Paul Maurice said was not serious. Dwyer played 5:57 in the 3-2 win over the Lightning.

His TOI may have been much

His TOI may have been much more had the 'Canes been on the PK more. I guess in bringing him up, JR was playing better safe than sorry.

The cost of...- to All

first of all and seeing that when i was up to my armpits in Hockey related issues, was during the Bobby Hull era, things back then were a wee bit more " labor" intensive than they are today. And i'll be honest, i forgot that unless Dwyer were to get Traded from Albany, His #39 jersey would remain on the hanger, for any & all future use by him . And yes i do see the value of him being here when he was,and as it was explained. But it did bother me as i am not a cheap skate, but considering what we, the fans have to pay to see some decent if not great sports entertainment& events. Who wants or desires to pay more than one has to for a seat when it may NOT be necessary in the first place. That was my reasons for raising the issue. Have a great week everyone...Be, and Play Safe !! Go Canes !!

Once again, your train of

Once again, your train of though has departed the station on time, but took a wrong turn somewhere and derailed later on.

Dwyer's call-up didn't and won't affect ticket prices.  And since YOU brought it up, please be reminded that Carolina has some of the cheapest tickets in the league.  We have always paid considerably less than the league average, and the front office has done a good job of keeping it that way even when it hurts the bottom line.

yup

YUP, and I enjoy going to games for $10. thats the only way I have been able to afford to go to 4 games this season (Montreal, Anaheim, Edmonton, St. Louis).

Well Dwyer's had a uniform

Well Dwyer's had a uniform since training camp, and he provides his own equipment, so that's a non-issue. But I just fail to see how this makes any difference at all. Recalling players happens constantly for all teams, it's the cost of doing business, so why all the sudden is anyone concerned about what it cost to bring up Dwyer for 6 minutes? Heck, the Canes have brought guys up in the past simply to sit in the pressbox as insurance in case a player wasn't ready to go.
Heck, I thought esteban has been suggesting bringing up players from Albany left and right all season, and now he's concerned about Dwyer's air fare? There's an old saying, penny wise, pound foolish.

i understand

your point and while it has been a long time since i physically saw brookbank on the ice.Not say he hasn't mind you, but still your point is well taken.Too bad we can't find out what the " total" costs were and are...as in wages for the people who work with the uniforms, equipment, and as i said earlier..the actual plane fare to Tampa and now back. Then divide that by 6 mins. And man that has got to be an awlful lot of monies..Thanks Piratepike...i know we don't agree or see eye to eye on things...but hey...perfection was found in the garden of eden ..wasn't it ?

Go Canes !!

20/20 hindsight

Sure, it's a lot of money to spend for 5:57 TOI, but we didn't know how much Dwyer would play at the time he was called up. If there had been another injury to a forward or a lot of penalties to kill, we would have needed Dwyer more. It's kind of like an expensive insurance policy.

Why are you so caught up on

Why are you so caught up on this?

It costs a lot of money to operate a sports team.  Yes.

Although I have no knowledge of the exact logistics, I would doubt that the Hurricanes pay standard airfare when they send a player up/down like that.  They probably have some corporate deal and/or a ton of frequent flyer miles accrued.

As far as Dwyer's "uniform and equipment", he's already been up this season, so there wasn't any additional cost for his uniform.  He most likely brought his gear with him, so there was no extra cost there either.

Seeing as how Brookbank is not at 100% (and is pretty lousy even when he is 100%) the only other option would have been to dress seven defensemen and/or double shift Ruutu or Walker.  That still wouldn't have done anything to address the fact that Dwyer was needed as a  good penalty killer.  At the time of the call-up, the nature and extent of Eaves' injury wasn't exactly clear.  Maybe they would have done it differently if they had known it would be for just one day.  Maybe not.

While it may not make fiscal sense to you to spend a few thousand in salary increase for the day, it was the best solution to address all of the needs.

Maybe you can look at it this way.  By sending Dwyer home today instead of waiting until Tuesday, they saved a few thousand dollars.

Well...

i was glad he came and tried to help out, but for what the canes had him do verses what it cost the canes in air-fare, uniform & euipment preperation and his salary for the one game( not being Cheap mind you) but when one were to add it all up, for all but 6 mins. and then divide what it cost the canes,by that 6 minutes, heck they could have given that kind of funds to the Kids charities the " canes' support. It would have been better spent as in better Stewardship, of one's resources or heck they could give that kind of "chump change" to some disgruntled fan and blogger,so they wouldn't have to throw fits, or 6.00 dollar hotdogs at somebody there at the beautiful RBC center in opie land, where the parking pattern never works for anyone !

Go canes !!

dumb argument

Also -- why do you keep harping on $6 hotdogs?  Hotdogs are only $3 at the RBCC.

Yo Tonka

i only mentioned the 6.00 hotdogs because somebody else a few days ago was asking if i sat in a certain section  trying to make people mad at me for bad mouthing the ref while attending games there at the Center...to where they'd get mad enough to want to throw 6.00 hotdogs...and to perfectly honest when  it comes hot dogs...don't want to be seen dead in the same room with them...because if you ever seen how they are made and even though the plants are clean, i never had the desire for another hot dog except one

and those puppies aint cheep but they are good...

I can agree.....

I can agree it was quite a bit of money for 6 minutes of playing time, but I do have to say that I would rather Dwyer be on the ice playing for 6 mins and Brookbank sitting in the box than Brookbank on the ice for 2 mins.
