Dalpe feeling the pressure

Bookmark and Share

Hurricanes second-round pick Zac Dalpe said after he was picked on Saturday that he intended to honor his commitment to Ohio State even though the Plymouth Whalers own his OHL rights.

The Whalers are owned by Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos, but it's probably just a coincidence that Whalers coach Greg Stefan, who until last December was the Hurricanes' goalie coach, is giving Dalpe the hard sell -- which is ruffling some feathers in Ohio.

"They're already on it, already trying to talk him out of going to Ohio State," Ohio State coach John Markell said. "It's going to be tough on Zac.

"They're the only team in the league that does that. Most NHL teams wouldn't do that, but they've chosen to do it."

Dalpe told the Columbus Dispatch again this week that he was going to Ohio State.

You'd think situations like this would raise questions for the NHL about a potential conflict of interest when the business of the Hurricanes and the Whalers overlap. NHL teams are prohibited from using junior teams as farm clubs, which was once the rule.

The Canes not only have drafted many players from Plymouth -- 14 since Karmanos became an NHL owner in 1994 -- but have steered many of their draftees to the franchise (Nikos Tselios, Justin Peters, Ondrej Otcenas).

"I know Pete," Markell said. "Business is business. He's going to do what’s best for his business, but it’s upsetting."

Plymouth players on Carolina

Of the three Plymouth players mentioned; Nikos Tselios, Justin Peters, Ondrej Otcenas, only Otcenas was drafted byt Plymouth. Plymouth traded for Peters (Toronto Majors) after he was drafted by Carolina, same with Tselios (Belleville Bulls).

Frankly Otcenas was a flop, he only spent one season with Plymouth.

But other Plymouth players, now on Carolina are Chad LaRose and Justin Williams. And there are a number of former Whalers in the Hurricanes AHL and ECHL farm teams.

The Ohio State coach is on thin ice, after last season, and Dalpe is one of the highest rated NHL prospect players ever.

McBain

Just to clarify, my comments on McBain had nothing to do with Luke's point about Plymouth/Carolina conflicts of interest. I was commenting on the statements by the OSU coach who seemed to imply 1) that the Hurricanes consistently try to convince their college-bound draftees to turn pro instead and 2) that the Canes are the only team in the NHL that does it. In both cases I think the coach's comments were disingenuous. McBain disproves his first point, since Francis actually encouraged him to return (in this case Albany rather than Plymouth was the alternative), and as other posters have commented, there are plenty of examples of other NHL teams pressuring draft picks to bypass college and go pro.

I haven't looked, but was

I haven't looked, but was McBain drafted by a Juniors team? If not, then of course the Canes didn't pressure him to play in Juniors because there's no team for him to report to.
Personally I think this is all blown out of proportion mostly due to some unfortunate statements in the media. There is nothing unusual about suggesting to your draft pick that they consider which league provides the best development. There's no "pressure" in doing that. The fact that his rights are owned by the Whalers just isn't relevant as far as I'm concerned. Juniors is a better place to develop regardless of which team it is. If the Canes nag him repeatedly and/or threaten to trade him if he refuses to leave Ohio State, then that's pressuring him. But this whole notion that the Canes are somehow doing anything that the other 29 NHL teams would never do is absurd.

I do know that the

I do know that the Hurricanes management felt that Jack Johnson would not sign with Carolina. Only Johnson's people know how he felt.

It does smell fishy that the Canes would pressure one kid to play juniors and not pressure another. Add to the fact that the kid they pressure rights belong to Plymouth and it looks bad.

I hope the kid does what is right for him. It's a business and Karmanos will look out for #1.

Dalpe

Unfortunate comments, coach Markell is making a direct attack at the Carolina Hurricanes organization. I am sure it is upsetting, but at the end of the day the best way to the NHL and to be prepared for the NHL is the CHL. They play more games, the travel schedule is arduous, and there is a better talent in the CHL. Zac will have to do what's best for Zac, which will be tough. I hope whatever decision he makes it is the fastest one to wearing Carolina Hurricanes jersey.

is this a big deal?

First of all regarding Johnson, sometimes players just don't want to play in certain cities. Look at Blake Wheeler. He turned down more money from Phoenix that he will end up signing for in Boston. Does anyone honestly think that Johnson really wanted to play here in Raleigh?

As for this situation with Dalpe, I don't see the big deal. As has been mentioned before, most NHL teams will discuss with their prospects what they believe would be best for the player's development.  Obviously, the Canes feel that Dalpe's career and development would be better served playing several more games, at a higher level than he would play at Ohio State.

Is that making him feel the pressure? Are the Canes supposed to just be quiet and not tell him what they think is best for him?  It would seem to me that if your goal was to play in the NHL, you would be interested in lictening to what the team that drafted you had to say on the subject.  Is it really that unusual?

It's still the kid's decision. As someone else stated, Jamie McBain stayed in school and Edwards Mills Road didn't explode.

Regarding Jack Johnson

For those who still question the situation with Johnson: why? This Dalpe story tells me all I need to know what happened now. For you Caniacs who continue to stay ignorant, then I don't know what else to say.

Dalpe's junior rights

Saw one of the comments below: what does McBain have to do with this? Luke is 100% correct: Hurricanes business and Plymouth Whalers business interests should not overlap. The problem is that the Plymouth Whalers own Zac Dalpe's CHL rights, so of course Karmanos' yes men thinks it's a grand idea for him to go center Chris Terry. A measure of a man's worth is in his word, but the Canes want him to go back on that. That's a problem for me. So, in a nutshell: 1) Karmanos business interests should not be bumping heads and 2) don't make the kid compromise himself.

Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson chose to drink cheap beer with his college buddies at Michigan rather than win a Stanley Cup...great decision...and now he can be a virtual unknown in LA for another 5 years until they can build a competitive team...good choice...sounds like Jack is getting some "good" advice or perhaps he is just his own man! Good luck Jack!

Jack Johnson

I heard a story that Jack Johnson didn't leave college to play for the Canes because he wanted to play for a "real hockey city". Probably a good thing he didn't play in this "fake" hockey city because we may not have won the Cup that year.

Yes, blame JJ

So, I take it you didn't read the articles in the Columbus dispatch.  It's written out in black & white for you, tell me why you don't understand still?

No one likes a pushy

No one likes a pushy salesman.

Johnson rant (part 2)

Before the season at Michigan was completed or likely even started - the trade took place (Sept 26, 2006). I don't blame Johnson for jumping ship after 2 spectacular seasons (statistically speaking) at Michigan (didn't win the title either year). At that point - nearly 6 months later and at the end of the Michigan season - Johnson signed and played for 5 games. The need for Defense and Johnson's willingness to stay at Michigan in my opinion is what caused the trade. Had we waited the entire year, would Johnson have wanted to go back for his Junior year at M? We don't know. We didn't get that chance. But don't post on here whose fault it is without a little bit of reasoning in your response.

And the Islanders had no

And the Islanders had no involvement with Kyle Okposo leaving the University of Minnesota in the middle of the season? The OSU coach's comments are disingenous at best.

Let it go - Johnson is gone (Part 1)

Look, unless any of us knew Jack Johnson personally (I doubt any of us did) or unless any of us are in the inner circle of the Canes Management - we don't and won't fully know the Jack Johnson situation. All we really know is what was ever published ... so lets look at that. It was published many times Jack wanted to attend Michigan. No secret there. He wanted to win a National Title. It was also published that the Canes were trying to get him to play for us after his freshman year (05-06). He says he's not ready and wants to keep trying for a title at Michigan. The Canes (who were playing quite well as we all remember - were by all published accounts upset). The Canes tried again during his sophomore year to get him to sign, again, he said he wasn't ready. Based on that, it looks to me like the Canes were rushing him. The Canes needed defense - especially in 06-07 - something had to be done.

Sounds like this college

Sounds like this college coach is desperate! His team must bite and he is blaming all outsiders.

Dalpe

Have to wonder about the OSU coach's comments. There was no indication at all that the Canes tried to get Jamie McBain not to honor his commitment to Wisconsin. In fact, Ron Francis met with him personally after this past season and encouraged him to return for his junior year. McBain was also a 2nd round pick, and is now considered to be a solid NHL prospect. So this would seem to contradict the statement that the Canes try to get players to not honor their college commitments. I can also assure you that plenty of other teams have tried to convince Badger players to change their minds, so suggesting that no other NHL teams put pressure on their draftees is not very convincing.

Jack Johnson was the bad guy no doubt about it

Jack Johnson did not have a problem leaving college to go to the glamour of LA, that answers that question. Next?

Couldn't be worse.

Couldn't be worse.

Jack Johnson the bad guy?

Makes you wonder if Jack Johnson was really the bad guy or if the organization just tried too hard to pull him out of college.

With the record of the 3

With the record of the 3 players mentioned (Nikos Tselios, Justin Peters, Ondrej Otcenas) that have gone thru Plymouth, you'd wonder why Karmanos or the organization continues to do this?
