Cullen puts aside rumors, plays hockey

Bookmark and Share

The Canes' Matt Cullen has heard all the trade rumors. He knows anything can happen, and could happen by Friday at 3 p.m., when the trade freeze for the Olympics begins.

But Cuilen says it's not hard putting that out of his mind and just concentrating on hockey.

"You just do," he said today. "That's the only way you can do it because it's part of the business.

"It's just one of those things you learn as a player, that you have to block out any distractions that you don't have control over. And this is one of those."

If you believe the speculation, there are at least four teams actively seeking a deal for Cullen, a good two-way center who can be used on the power play and is an aggressive penalty killer. If you believe the speculation, general manager Jim Rutherford wants at least a second-round draft pick in return for Cullen, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

"I just focus on what I'm doing on the ice and don't consider anything else," Cullen said. "I think that's the best way to be successful. That's what I've learned from guys like Roddy (Brind'Amour), to just focus on the game, because that's all you can control."

Cullen said this is the last thing anyone could have expected, to be in February and all but out of the playoff chase and having everyone guessing which players will be traded and when. Ray Whitney's name is being tossed around even more than Cullen's.

"We didn't expect it but that's the way it worked out," he said. "It's just the way the business works. Everyone knows when they're going into the final year of their contract, if they're not in the playoffs are whatever, there's a likely chance."

Cullen does not have a no-trade clause in his contract, so he said the information he's getting is sketchy. Canes management, he said, handles the negotiations.

"I know all that talk is out there but I don't really worry about it or look into that," he said. "There's nothing I can do to control it, so it's a waste of time and energy for me."

Regardless of how things shake out, Cullen said he would like to be back with the Canes next season, if all can be worked out suitably for both sides.

"We have a home here and love it, and obviously have some great friends and great memories here," he said. "Certainly this is the place where I really like playing, but we'll just have to see how it plays out."

Cullen costs less than

Cullen costs less than Whitney (an important consideration!) and is more versatile. I believe we have players-in-waiting who can backfill Whitney's role although it may take them a while to pile up as many points. On the other hand, re-signing Cullen would give us three legitimate NHL centers (Staal, Sutter, and Cullen). Usually, teams don't win cups without three good centers.

Monday Debate?

This sounds like an interesting Monday Debate topic. If the Canes could only re-sign one of their unrestricted free agents during the offseason, which one should they pick? Whitney, Cullen, and Corvo would get most of the votes, but there could be some good arguments for another player like Walker or even Yelle.

which to re-sign

Personally Whitney ,but for the team Corvo...why? scoring from the point and harder for us to replace points from there...and Boychuk/Bowman/Tlusty can fill in quicker than a d-man...We all know how we miss the points that Seidenberg and Babs had from there last year plus continuity is harder to establish with new d-men as we know to well this year...Cullen is a very versatile player ,but we are stacked with table setters we need a finisher in which Bowman is that player and I hope he gets the call-up this time. That 10min of ice time and NO powerplay min made me scratch my head...other than Staal/Whitney Bowman is the best finisher we have in the system period and he's good in the shoot-out.

Myself personally

i really woudn't want to see him or Whitney go. but as matt has pointed out, it is part of the business end of the sport. And his "attitude" is very commendable. like we all love to pea, whine, moan and complain about the weather...no one here can do anything about it...just what the front office of any pro sports team does...it is something any player can't do much about as a general rule...so i think all of us should take the stance Matt Cullen has...just stay focused on the game and do the job...play hockey...and for us fans to cheer and root for our Hurricanes...

The Canes are Good,My Grandkids are Better, and Life is Great !!
Go Canes !!

Cullen/Whitney

This is the part that I hate the most out of having a bad season...I hope they both come back next year ,our young guy's need vet's with work ethic like Ray and Matt to lead them...where-ever they go somebody's getting 2 real hockey players and will be missed...But i would hate to see them go and were maybe 7-8 pts out at the break...Just trade them OUT of the East J.R!

Cullen and Re-signing Him After the Season

Cullen has been playing some fantastic hockey over the last 30 games or more. I think he has been very, very steady throughout the season -- even when some of the other veterans were having trouble getting out of pre-season gear and into playoff mode hockey. Cullen still has speed, quickness, and good hands. I really hope there is some way that it is economically feasible for him to re-sign with the Hurricanes.

Whatever happens, whoever signs Cullen is going to get an excellent hockey player who gives it 100% every shift.

Agreed.

I know this might receive some flak from some fans, but I would rather re-sign Matt at 2yrs/2.5 a year than re-signing Whitney.

I like them both but if I had my pick I'd take #8.

We could have forward core that looked like this:
Staal-Jokinen-Cole
Sutter-LaRose-Ruutu
Cullen-Samsonov-Kostopolous
Boychuk-Brind'Amour-Tlusty

If Rod were to retire we could insert - Bowman or first round pick into that slot.

Cullen

Cullen definitely, Whitney depending on the deal - I wouldn't give him more than 2 years at a very modest salary.

Staal-Hall-Jokinen

Cullen-Cole-Ruutu

Sutter-Bowman-Boychuk

TKO-Dwyer-someone mean and nasty who play hockey.

We need to add someone to our 4th line who can play hockey & fight - Cody McLeod, Jamal Myers like. I think we package Samsonov & our 2nd round pick for a dman.

Flak Given

We have heard the excuse for the past couple of seasons that Eric needs Erik on the wing to make him play at the elite level.  Can we put that to bed, please?  Playing with Ray and Jussi he has shown what he can do with capable, and healthy, players. Personally, I would bring both #8 and #13 back.  Both for 2 years but in Ray's case the 2nd being either the teams or his option on the 2nd.  Erik was supposed to be back by now and he isn't.  He is practicing, but in the yellow jersey.  I think the team has to sit down with him and the doctors to see what is truly wrong.  If it is something that prohibits him from playing any longer, then the team is able to get any medical exemption relief due since he is unable to fulfill his contract because of health reasons.  That leaves this possible scenario:  Whitney-Staal-Jokinen; Ruutu-Cullen-Larose; Sutter-Kostoupolos-Samsonov; Brind'Amour-Tlusty-Boychuck with maybe Samson or Bowman waiting in the wings.  Also, since there are so many players who will be UFA's, that leaves wiggle room under the cap to sign a player or two

Love #8

Cullen is my favorite. I hope he sticks around, and if not, I hope he goes to a team who'll make a run at the Cup, and then comes back home next season.
