Corvo: decision not based on money

Bookmark and Share

Joe Corvo probably could have signed with another team for more money. A free agent with quickness, skating skills and a powerful shot, he was desirable.

But Corvo said today he wanted back with the Hurricanes. This is where he wanted to play. This is where his family wanted to live.

"It's good to be back and not have to worry about where I fit in and stuff," Corvo said after signing a two-year contract with the Canes. "This makes it easy. This is the best situation for me."

The new deal with pay Corvo $2 million the first season and $2.5 million in the second.

"It's probably sounds like a cliche, but you can't make all your decisions based on how much money you can get somewhere," he said. "I know where I stand with the people and the organization here.

"Jim appreciates the kind of person I am and player I am. That meant a lot."

Corvo said he appreciated general manager Jim Rutherford trading him to the Washington Capitals on March 3, allowing him a chance to make a run at the Stanley Cup. That didn't work out as the Caps were knocked out by the Montreal Canadiens, but Corvo remembered being given the opportunity when it was time to sign a new deal.

"This organization is a quality organization and Jim did a good thing for me by trading me to Washington and possibly having a chance to win a Cup," Corvo said. "I wanted to do something for him to say, 'Thank you.'

"I'm looking forward to getting back with the guys. I'm familiar with the coaches, so there won't have to be any transition. Maybe we can stay healthy this season and surprise some people."

Refreshing

Very refreshing to hear, especially with all of the "King James" garbage being spewed forth 24 hours a day from the NBA lately.  Good to have #77 back - we need him.

Corvo and the Canes

It is really admirable that Joe Corvo not only spoke about the importance of making decisions about an NHL career with considerations not solely or primarily influenced by salary; but made some critical life decisions based on those values.  Corvo is also right that the 2010-2011 Hurricanes may well surprise the NHL with their play in 2010-2011.  It is great to have Corvo back.

THANK YOU JOE!!!!!!!

Thank you for your dedication to our team AND STATE!

I was sad to see you leave BUT LOVE THAT YOU ARE BACK!

I still have that Florida OT game winner by you as one of my favorite games.  That's Hockey baby.

I CAN WEAR MY 77 AGAIN!

Thank you J.R. and Joe!

I was glad to have Joe back before

A little suprised, but glad.  Now, given the sentiment Joe expressed, I am very happy to be able to say, "Welcome Back!".

Ray

Hey Whitney read this article, see its not ALWAYS about the money. Welcome back Corvo!
