Canes forward Erik Cole will be out four to six weeks after breaking a bone in his left leg, general manager Jim Rutherford said today.
Cole was bringing the puck down the left boards and was injured with less than three minutes to play in the Hurricanes' 7-2 loss Saturday at Boston in a collision with the Bruins' Dennis Wideman. Cole's leg hit Wideman's right leg as Wideman attempted a hip check.
Cole was traded by the Canes to the Edmonton Oliers after the 2007-08 season but returned to Carolina in March in a three-team trade. An unrestricted free agent after the season, he signed a two-year, $5.8-million contract with the Canes in July.
Tim Conboy will go into the lineup for Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay. In Sunday practice, Conboy was working with Stephane Yelle and Tom Kostopoulos. Scott Walker was on Rod Brind'Amour's line with Jussi Jokinen.
A Raleigh native, Chip has worked at the N&O since 1979 and is in his second season as the Canes beat writer. He can be reached at chip.alexander@newsobserver.com. You can follow him on Twitter at @ice_chip.

Cheap shots? Are like cheap Ed spots
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 13:39 — esteban1949will go away ...but i have never seen Tim Conboy throw a cheap shot. Grant you Tim Conboy may never become a HOF for his stats...but he does have plenty of support and respect of we the fans. And yes as many of you here are STH'ers and regular game attendees do expect a large bang for the bucks...and i can't really fault anyone of you for feeling that way. but let none of us forget that the players are just like you and me...human,made of flesh and blood, prone to error and mistakes...so appreciate the things we and the Canes do offer to we, the fans...and let's all have an "attitude of Graditude"...after all wouldn't anyone of us desire the same thing ? For those of you who are able and blessed to be able to go and see the canes play tonight please remember those who can't... have fun, but please be safe !!
Go Canes !!
PS...can somebody please find a away to get rid of those silly cheap ed 7 other spam ads please !!!
Let me try this another way...
Mon, 10/05/2009 - 20:47 — robotron2084Will I support Tim Conboy tomorrow night? Absolutely. The guy brings the energy and enthusiasm. Do I think adding him to the line-up, and shuffling the lines, gives the Canes a better chance of winning then giving Boychuk a callup? No, I don't. That's my opinion, as a supporter of this team, and I'm sticking with it.
I support the team just fine thank you
Mon, 10/05/2009 - 20:39 — robotron2084I've been a season ticket holder since they arrived in Raleigh so I think I support them plenty. I have bought tons of stuff through the Kids 'N Community organization, so I support that too. And I support the team enough to call it as I see it without the rose-colored glasses.
That said, I fail to see how I've criticized the team. I have criticized Bettman and his ridiculous instigator rule, but know that it is what it is, and every team knows exactly what happens if you decide to stand up for your teammate - a powerplay for your opponent. Tim Conboy is absolutely a heart and soul guy. Never said anything to the contrary. But he is not a skill player and we just lost a top 6 forward. I know no one suggested Conboy play on the 2nd line. But inserting him means we now get a new 2nd, 3rd and 4th line combination as opposed to bringing in Boychuk who has shown skill and leaving the 3rd and 4th lines to continue to gell. If you love Conboy, put him in for Kostopolous who hasn't done much but get knocked out (there, now I've criticized a player for your pleasure).
So, does supporting the team not extend to the thinking young skill players like Boychuk should get a shot when a spot opens up? Seems I had plenty of good things to say about him, but guess he doesn't count in your book.
Well said...
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 14:52 — hockeyhick...but i think the real reason Conboy was called up instead of Boychuck was to send a message to all the players in the organization, Albany included. The message that the Hurricanes are gonna play TOUGH. That we are gonna fight (as in BATTLE), hit, and not get pushed around. It was the theme of the entire off-season. It also send a message to the guys that got fat new contracts that it's THEIR TIME to earn that money. It speaks to Staal, Ruutu, Rosie and Jussi and tells them THEY need to start scoring-we're not gonna bail you out with a callup of Boychuck.
Conboy himself, Maurice, JR, everybody- they all know that Conboy isn't gonna score 30 goals or 50 points. But they ALL KNOW that he will bring an energy, a toughness to the lineup that should be contagious as it was last season.
I think it's waaaay too early to bandy about words like "chemistry"-the lines will not be the same at the end of the season as they are now. The new faces will take time to find their groove. Now is, however, the time for the TEAM to make good on it's proclaimed "NEW IDENTITY". And I think Conboy sends that message.
No, no, I don't "Love
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 07:42 — SkylinerNo, no, I don't "Love Conboy" I merely believe the guy deserves a chance sans prejudgment from any of us. I too am disappointed in the initial performances of our new acquisitions (Kostopolous, Alberts, Ward, et el) and see redeeming virtue in what is in our pipeline up in Albany, but the season is just out of the chute so let's see if things settle down a bit before we make massive adjustments. Boychuk seems to have great potential, but perhaps we should fully determine what Conboy can do (over time) before we relegate him to the slag heap of hockey players. The man deserves a chance to prove himself.
No need to defend yourself so vigorously. Sometimes reaction is drawn not by what is said, but by how it is presented. And since this is a forum for opinion exchange, if not an occasional left handed bard, it's OK for us to verbally spar. Besides, anyone who strongly supports Kids 'N Community is OK with me!!!
Hockey 101
Mon, 10/05/2009 - 11:19 — robotron2084It may be Hockey 101 but not in Bettman's NHL.
No one is afraid of anything anymore because of the instigator rule. And I assure you, no one is afraid of Tim Conboy and his 2 minutes of ice time.

Sun, 10/04/2009 - 19:34 — wxray1This is "better" than an ACL/MCL tendon tear, but man, there has to be some collateral damage. I suspect the joint "collided" and caused some sort of compression fracture. Hopefully it can all heal at the same time. Knees are so fragile!
Erik is a tough guy. I'm hoping for the best.
Callup time
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 18:08 — robotron2084Sounds like Boychuk needs to be called up from Albany. We don't need 4-6 weeks of Conboy.
Big Plus
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 20:36 — drsinvestWhen Conboy gets in a fight .. we get to hear his theme song ...
"We got a beautiful convoy rockin' through the night ... Convoooooyyyyy"
Really?
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 19:17 — WAStoutLet's look at Conboy's Win-Loss record while "In" as a Hurricane.
Think he would of taken that crap Saturday night?
Is he Cole? Of course not. Rutuu will do just fine on the first line and Conboy will add that "toughness" we really need.
Go get em Conboy. Put on the foil.
Yes Really
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 21:37 — robotron2084You seriously think that Conboy is the main factor in winning those games? Really? And if you think Conboy would add the toughness to prevent what happened against the Bruins, then I suggest you look at how much playing time Gleason had on Opening Night thanks to Bettman and that horrid instigator penalty. That rule is destroying hockey. Let's see, Conboy will get 2 for instigating, 5 for fighting and a 10 minute game misconduct while the other team goes on the powerplay (against the Canes crappy penalty kill, so just go ahead and hand them a goal). Yeah, that'll teach 'em not to mess with us.
But sure, far better that they shuffle 3 lines than to bring up a kid that has already shown he has the skill necessary to play in the top 6.
Support the team!
Mon, 10/05/2009 - 17:33 — SkylinerYou just pulled the Hat Trick of negatives.Three comments from you and they all negative. Don't you have anything good to say about anyone? Maybe Conboy isn't a game breaker, but the guy had paid his dues (hate that cliche) but it's true. He's been up and down to Albany like a yo-yo and not complained and is doing his best...a much better testimony to dedication, determinatiion and effort than an interloper who sits on the sidelines and directs criticism at others. What more can be asked when a man gives his best? He's not great but he plays to his talent level. By the way, what have you contributred to the hockey team or are you just a cynical critic who contributes nothing but pessimism? Pay no attention to that "man behind the curtain" Tim. True Hurricane fans are behind you!!!!!
Hockey 101
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 22:57 — scomilHave you been watching hockey this year in the preseason and first few games of the regular season? Head-hunting and fighting is back big time - especially in the Eastern conference. Conboy should have been in the lineup against Boston. I can promise you this - if Conboy isn't playing in a lot of games this year, several of our starters will not be playing much this season.
Cole's Injury
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 17:24 — dwayne1203Having some experience with leg injuries, I think a broken bone is better than serious knee injuries,(eg ACL,..)
Cole
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 17:42 — chipalexander (author)Watching the replay, it's hard to believe he didn't tear up the knee. It looked really bad. I thought it might be a season-ender.
Like You Chip
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 17:57 — esteban1949i too saw the replys and man i just knew his knee was all but gone...but 6 weeks is alot beter than being out until april or the remaining 80 games of this season. And how about Rosie putting Chara on his butt ? every body should have done the same to thorton, sheridan and a few other bruins...thanks Chip
Go Canes !!
at least its not his knee,
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 17:20 — cpjuengeat least its not his knee, thios shouldnt scare him away from continueing to play that fast style of hockey, like it seemed maybe his neck injury did for a few years.
