The Canes have agreed to terms with defenseman Brett Carson on a one-year, two-way contract that will pay Carson $500,000 on the NHL level and $105,000 on the American Hockey League level in 2010-11.
“Brett got his first shot at being a regular on the NHL level last season, and proved that he could provide a consistent, solid presence on our back end,” general manager Jim Rutherford said. “We’re happy that we were able to get this deal done and bring him back, as this really strengthens the depth of our defense.”
Carson, 24, established NHL career highs in games played (54), goals (2), assists (10) and points (12) in 2009-10. The Regina, Sask., native ranked second among Hurricanes skaters in plus/minus, with a plus-5 rating, and was fourth on the team in blocked shots (89).

Rodney and Carson are both
Tue, 07/20/2010 - 11:21 — Hockeydad92Rodney and Carson are both solid signings. The Canes / Checkers D corps are getting well stocked. Let's hope some of them bulk up and pan out. Now if we can just come up with a way to add a few inches to the forwards....
I blame Jim Rutherford for

Thanks!
I think he's being sarcastic
Tue, 07/20/2010 - 12:48 — ocolumnI think he's being sarcastic in reference to posts on some of the other stories on Canes Now.
My question: Does this makes Carson a UFA or an RFA at the end of this coming season? I'm sure one of you guys can answer that.
UFA
Tue, 07/20/2010 - 17:38 — sittler27He'll be an UFA.
If he plays at the NHL level and has a solid year it might serve both sides well to negotiate a longer term deal before the end of the season. However with the uncertainty of a declining CAP JR may want to keep space clear to sign the bigger guns.
RFA
Mon, 07/26/2010 - 00:30 — sittler27My bad..... he will be a RFA next year. Only way he will become an UFA is if Canes don't tender him a contract before the deadline like they did this year. Of course, that all worked well for the Canes this year and they got him for less plus a two way contract. I hope he has a good year and the Canes decide to sign him to a longer term deal.
Carson and One Year Contract
Tue, 07/20/2010 - 20:48 — abramsdougJim Rutherford works on the premise that he will pay a young player after the player proves himself. Carson is excellent and was very, very dependable in 2009-2010. To get bigger money, like Tlusty, Carson had to prove himself on the ice over the 82 game grind; and therefore both got 1 year, one way contracts offered to them. Tlusty took the offer, which I thought was a hockey intelligent move. I really like Carson; and I think he will be rewarded in his next contract for proving himself. My guess is that Harrison will likely be waived down to Charlotte, as occurred this year. Of course, Harrison might well be somewhat of a late bloomer and if he reaches his full potential, he could be a strong, stay at home, physical defenseman. It probably did not help Harrison in 2009-2010 that he had some lingering injuries. Whatever happens, I really like how the Hurricanes defense is looking, including depth in Charlotte.
