Second-period goals by Zach Boychuk and Brandon Sutter helped propel the Carolina Hurricanes past the Minnesota Wild 4-1 Thursday night in the championship game of the NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Mich.
Boychuk and Sutter pushed the Canes ahead 3-1 in the second period. Boychuk's goal, which was unassisted, was his fourth of the tournament while Sutter scored short-handed after a tripping penalty against Brett Bellemore.
Stefan Chaput added the final goal late in the third for the Canes, who were competing in a prospects tournament for the first time since 2005. Carolina finished 3-1, beginning the event with 5-3 wins over New York Rangers and the host Detroit Red Wings.
Mike Murphy started his fourth straight game in goal for Carolina and finished with 31 saves. Murphy played all but the third period of the Canes' 7-3 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday — five Thrashers goals came in the final period.
Chris Terry scored for the Canes in the first period, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The Wild outshot the Canes 11-5 in the period, scoring on a power play.
The Canes played Thursday without injured defenseman Michal Jordan and forward Justin McCrae.

Fri, 09/11/2009 - 15:21 — esteban1949even without know who some of the " other" players for the other teams were...it is good to see our group do as well as many of us knew they could. But will that put "extra" pressure on the likes of Boychuk,Sutter, Chaput & Murphy for the upcoming season ? As Stefan has a better than average stats there in Albany. man i am so happy i aint a GM for the rats or the Canes...I'd be eating and living on rollaids 24-7...
Go Canes !!
Great news from this tourney

Now, onto hockey. I know this tournament isn't the be-all, end-all, but you have to take it as an encouraging sign that the guys who we expect to score, scored. And our goaltending (on paper) looked great from the guy who has to be good. Peters by no means is third in line anymore.
Good stuff. It will be fun to watch them in camp.
