Paul Maurice was on the ice today at Raleigh Center Ice, a coach leading the Canes through a normal practice. Afterward, the players preferred to talk about tomorrow, about the Sabres game, about moving on.
But how do they get out of this losing funk?
"Play like a team, first and foremost," captain Eric Staal said. "Just consciously be aware of keeping pucks out of our net and playing as a group, playing for each other, sticking together and going at it that way. That's the only way you can do it."
Maurice, the coach at the center of the storm, was asked how he would prepare his team for a game with so much speculation around about his job status following a miserable 4-0 loss Wednesday to the Montreal Canadiens.
"It's not a one-time thing. We've been dealing with that for a while," Maurice said. "The challenge is to not focus on anything more than one thing and to get that focus on one thing throughout your lineup, regardless of the style of game a player plays.
"We've clearly struggled defensively, but it seems we spend a lot of time talking about the offensive parts of our game and getting offensive players going. We weren't a good team last night in any parts of the game. Our focus has to be on each player playing that good, solid defensive game."
After practice, Maurice said one personnel move had been decided on: forward Zac Dalpe will be reassigned to the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) and Anthony Stewart would go into the lineup after being a healthy scratch. Stewart was on Eric Staal's line in today's practice with Chad LaRose.
"We have to get four lines off the bench," Maurice said, adding that Zach Boychuk could spend some time on Staal's line.
Maurice said he has sensed some frustration in goaltender Cam Ward. Ward was sensational Saturday in the 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins but was lifted in the second period against the Philadelphia Flyers and was not given a lot of help last night against the Habs.
"There would be some frustration in his game, and it comes from Cam believing in his heart he can play the way he did against Pittsburgh every night," Maurice said. "That's not a realistic standard. You pick your top five goaltenders in the history of the NHL, none of them played like that every night. ... We can't put him in that position, but we've done it."
Ward said that with such a busy schedule, no one is allowed to dwell too long on any game, whether a win or a loss.
"As miserable as it was in Montreal, and there wasn't a lot of good to take from it, today's a new day and you've got to prepare yourself for Buffalo," Ward said. "And work at just righting the ship. It's not as easy as it sounds but it's the way you've got to approach it. You've got to be strong mentally and this is a challenge for ourselves, but we've got to change within ourselves to get it done.
"I'm frustrated just like everybody else. You don't ever want to get to the point where you accept losing.""
Asked about the leadership needed to change the course of a season that could be swirling away, Maurice said to look to no one but him.
"It comes from the coach, bottom line. It's not on them," Maurice said. "We want to play a far superior team game, (and) I will ask them to individually prepare themselves. But this is now the time, in the most heat, that it's not on the captain, it's not on the players. It's on me."
How tough will it be with each game now feeling like a referendum on his coaching and job security?
"I'm not sure that that game-by-game started in early November 1995," he said. "This is the grind that you learn to survive and deal with it as a man, deal with your players, rally your troops, have direct and honest conversations with players that need to have those. And make sure that when you're standing behind the bench you show that confidence in your team. And you just do it every day, night after night."
Jeff Skinner, asked about dealing with the speculation about Maurice, about possible trades, replied: "There's no use talking about it really."
"We've have to go out and the guys in this locker room have to figure out how to get a win. We can't be looking for outside help. We just have to get a win and find a way to get it done."

Minority shareholders.......
Fri, 11/18/2011 - 06:55 — B11656Any second guessing by any of the new share holders? Can't really call them partners, they have no say in day to day and what goes on. Don't own enough shares. Just a ruse by PK to say LOOK WE HAVE LOCALS as owners. What, maybe 3, 4% of the team? Just biding time to see when this Circus tent falls. Any bets on Monday?

Fri, 11/18/2011 - 00:34 — Philcobrown23 have a better career winning % than Paul Maurice! Time to get rid of Mo! Hire Ted Nolan or bring up Jeff Daniels from CLT!
Not Daniels
Fri, 11/18/2011 - 10:30 — DavidMeyerI like Jeff Daniels, but this is not the right time for him to come up. We don't need an NHL rookie coach right now. That would be both cheap and wrong. We need a coach with much more experience leading veteran NHL players, not the young guys. Our young guys are not the problem.
We need a fresh perspective; someone from far outside the Hurricanes organization, not another homegrown talent or retread. Remember the breath of fresh air that Laviolette was when he was hired? That is what we need; hit the reset button. The current guys are mentally down and need a fresh new perspective. And a primary focus on defense, which for us is, and has been, a mess.
And please. . . no Ted Nolan.

Fri, 11/18/2011 - 10:52 — gmwannabeeI am trying to think of some who are out there. How about Larry Robinson? He can at least bring in a defensive scheme to maybe cut down on shots Ward has to see. I will say this: when Robinson was coaching NJ and Maurice was here the first tour, I went to a pre game practice I think during the playoffs at RBC. What I remember was, when the hurricanes practiced it looked like the players were all loud and no real structure. When NJ came out, you could hear a pin drop. No yelling or anything. Just organization and a whistle blow once in awhile. Crisp passes and good drills. It impressed me at least. I always feel in any sport on any level, you are only as good on game day as a result of how you practice.
Please just get rid of this guy.
Thu, 11/17/2011 - 21:21 — awesomecardsIt was just a few days ago, after our loss to Philadelphia, that Maurice said we were starting to "find our identity as a team." Well, this is it. Our identity is losers.
That will remain our identity until a coaching change occurs.
I had tickets to Monday night's game, because I wanted the Skinner bobblehead, and this sorry organization couldn't even get that right. I am greeted at the front door with a "sorry we don't have your bobblehead" letter. The bobbleheads showed up later in the evening, but the hockey team did not.
Skinner Bobblehead
Fri, 11/18/2011 - 14:26 — Caniac5I think the fun thing about the Bobblehead is it has NO affiliation with the Hurricanes organization on it. (LOL) Skinner is in a suit holding the trophy. There is not ONE hurricane emblem on it.
What does that tell you?!
this guy has got some kinda
Thu, 11/17/2011 - 20:52 — toddchrissthis guy has got some kinda job security!!!!!!!!bet they wish they would ve signed ray whitney 2 years ago.but hey, you got about 2 nhl defensemen and you got about 2 legitimate scoring threats out there and you wonder why we cant win games, plus good ol Mo behind the bench, that guy has some real fire in him. Maybe the top brass have got just what they wanted because a moron can see this team has got nothing. and hey keep telling us how about them kids in minor league system., they have gotten a chance or so to play whether it is the fourth line or not and none of them has done anything but skate around,if you cant score in the nhl then your not needed, like baseball , a thousand kids can catch a ball and snag a hot grounder but if you cant hit a curve ball then your not going to make in the bigs!!!!!We have got a bunch of minor leaguers out there and and have tricked everyone to believe that they are the next big thing!!!!!!!!!

Interesting tweet from Dalpe
Thu, 11/17/2011 - 17:10 — CanarseHe almost sounded happy to go back to Charlotte. "good bunch of guys, for sure." Is that a shot at the Canes locker room? I can't imagine the young guys are getting a lot of support from the vets.
"We have to get four lines
Thu, 11/17/2011 - 16:45 — rmmeli"We have to get four lines off the bench" - what a moron.
You've got to love
Thu, 11/17/2011 - 16:35 — HurricanesUNC12You've got to love Maurice. Only a game removed from playing the top lines (Staal, Skinner, Sutter all over 20 minutes) to death and keeping the fourth line off the ice for the entire 3rd period he issues this quote ""We have to get four lines off the bench."
But wait it gets better, lets not forget in his press conference after the game his response to a question on that topic "the guys on the ice [were what kept the 4th line off]" followed by Maurice storming out.
Getting all four lines involved comes right down to you Maurice. So which is it?
