ATLANTA -- The Hurricanes will officially enter a bid next week to host the 2011 NHL All-Star Game, general manager Jim Rutherford said Wednesday.
Rutherford said the bid would be made to the league next week in New York. There will be applications from other teams, he said.
The Phoenix Coyotes were to host the February 2011 game in Glendale, Ariz., but because of the unsettled financial situation surrounding the franchise, bids are being accepted for the game.
It's estimated the All-Star Game, if held in Raleigh, could have an economic impact of $10 million for the area.

All-Star Game in Raleigh
Thu, 01/21/2010 - 15:13 — schelle92I won't be holding my breath. They've been promising this for years. I'll believe it when they start selling tickets for it.
Who?
Thu, 01/21/2010 - 17:01 — richardfocWho has been "promising this for years?" Not the Canes. They would love to host an All Star game but it's not just a matter of asking. The league has to approve the bid before the game can be brought here. Hopefully with the new high-end hotels (Umstead, Renaissance at North Hills) and the Convention Center we can be considered.
Does anyone else remember this
Thu, 01/21/2010 - 12:54 — amccarthRight after the team officially moved to the RBC center, within a year or two, the team ran a promotion pushing for the sale of season tickets with the promise that if a certain goal was reached that they would get an All Star Game within 3 years. I know that the goal was reached that year but I know that was a minimum of 6 years ago, probably more. It is hard to believe the team on the issue now after that total failure.
there were many factors
Thu, 01/21/2010 - 13:23 — hockeyhickthat led to Raleigh not hosting the All-Star game, most notably the lack of high-end hotel and convention space. The concession by the league was that the draft was held here, with an agreement to revisit the opportunity to host the all-star game at a later date.
There will be an all-star game here in raleigh in the very near future. It isn't the decision of just the team to host it-there are many, many factors and parties involved. so saying you don't "beleive" them is a tad bit on the silly side. it's not like the Canes don't want to host the game-it would be great for the team and the city.
If there is any party to "distrust"in all of this it's the NHL. THEY are the ones that all but guranteed an All-Star game. But again-it was based on (1) the team selling x number of tickets, and (2) expansion of the available hotel space, among many other factors that the team had no control over.
There were other stipulations
Thu, 01/21/2010 - 13:13 — biggssalvatoreThe season ticket threshold was met but there were other stipulations. The triangle area at that time did not meet the needs with appropriate hotel accommodations to support the event nor did we have a convention center needed for the events of the weekend. There are now new hotels in the area (The Umstead, etc) as well as the downtown convention center that make Raleigh a more feasible location for the event. Gary Bettman has stated that we have been "on the list" since that season the promise was made, and now we have the facilities to make it a reality. I doubt we will get it next year, but sometime in the near future is a real possibility.
That's
Wed, 01/20/2010 - 23:12 — esteban1949A good idea, and even here in the triad sporting events like the CIAA &NCAA events and the like do help bring much needed revenu...hope the canes get it. as i feel that the RBCC has what it will take to put on the event. Thanks for the info Chip !!
