Canes sign Coyotes wing Goertzen

Bookmark and Share

The Hurricanes have signed former Phoenix Coyotes right wing Steven Goertzen to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal pays the 25-year-old Goertzen $500,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 should he land with the Canes' American Hockey League affiliate next season.

Goertzen played 16 games with the Coyotes last season, scoring two goals and recording two assists. Playing the rest of the season with the Coyotes' AHL affiliate, the 6-foot-2, 216-pound wing scored six goals and earned eight assists, totaling 90 penalty minutes in 57 AHL games.

In a statement release by the Hurricanes this afternoon, vice president and assistant general manager Jason Karmanos said Goertzen adds "needed size and grit" to the team's group of forwards.

“He is an experienced depth player who will help Albany, and also can contribute at the NHL level,” Karmanos said in the statement.

Alberta Boy

Nothing wrong with adding another Alberta boy, can't have enough of those. I am guessing we won't see this guy much whether he makes the team or not, but if he does and gets to play minutes on our fourth line I've got no problem with a big, mean, Western Canadian Kid beating on our opponents.

other signings...

I think Casey Borer just signed, and at least one other AHLer that may have a shot at the big club. Hopefully JR will be thinking top 4 D-man, but we may need to wait until August to see what leftovers he can pick over.....

another other signings

Just saw we signed Jay Harrison, a Maple Leaf depth player. Big defenseman, good speed. JR said he could challenge for a spot with the big boys next year.

i also remember Him

And while some may think of feel Goertzen is bargin basement material, but don't seem to remember that if he is at Albany...that is where he will be coming to help out...and trust me...he does (according to his stats) has the savvy to come and jump right in...Just a Conboy & company did the last 2 seasons...so give the guy a chance, who knows...he just might surprise all of us....and what about Conboy ?? I have checked in with Phil up in Schenectady, but so far i haven't heard back yet...

Go Canes !!

Jim seems to think Bargain

Jim seems to think Bargain baement , he is letting seidenberg leave beacuse he wont pay for a good defensemenand adding a forth liner from one of the worst in the nhl......you get what you pay for..........

Pay per slots

It's not a 'bargain basement'... you have a lineup of 20 regulars and 3-5 guys who are going to come in and out (13 FW, 7th D)... you budget money into each position, every team does this, particularly teams like the Canes that are actually operating on an internal budget, below the Cap.

This has nothing to do with Seidenberg leaving... it has to do with depth.

As far as Seidenberg, he hasn't signed anywhere yet.  JR said LaRose was gone less than 48 hours before signing him, so I still say there's a chance he'll be back.

this guy is for the AHL our

this guy is for the AHL our forward lines are complete assuming ruutu signs.

Depth or more?

I am not familiar with this player, but he has good size and sounds like a scrapper. I'm sure he'll get a good look in camp.

Ryan Bayda Replacement

That's what I read this as.  Maybe less speed but more physicality than Bayda.  Also makes you wonder about Conboy and if he'll play at the NHL level next season.

Conboy on 1-way deal next season

Conboy's contract is 1-way next season, which basically means he's assured a spot on the NHL roster.

Conboy / Peters are 2 Way

Canes & Sportsnet.ca has Conboy & Peters as a two way, one year contracts

Prior to the 08-09 year

Prior to the 08-09 year Conboy signed a two year contract.  The first year was a two-way deal, the second is a one-way deal.  The salary for next year is only $500,000, which isn't enough, even for Karmanos, to guarantee his a spot on the big league, especially if one of the younger kids makes a big play for a roster spot.

Size

This year it is different. EVERYONE new drafted or signed has size.

Six footers are not big

Size does not mean someone is 6 feet or 6-1. Size is 6-4 and up and we don't have enough of those guys. Hey, is Nikos Tselios still available? He has size. So does Marek Malik.

Our tiny team, our NC tradition.

ha ha ha

Yeah, you're right!  After watching years of guys who are 5' 11" and below playing, I forgot what size was!

BTW, I'm 5' 11", and 2 years ago I went to the "Skate with the Canes".  Standing next to those guys, I was actually alarmed at how small they were.  I have my picture with Jeff Hamilton, and although he's listed at 5'10", I think they list that optimistically.  I also have a picture with Craig Adams, and we were the same height, although he's listed at 6'0".

Staal and Wallin were also on the ice and they both felt like giants to me.

I remember this guy

He scored his first NHL goal against the Canes last February (also Jussi's first game with the Canes).

Big 4th liner... he's listed at 6-2 215.
