Canes send Aaron Ward to Anaheim

Bookmark and Share

The Canes, in their first transaction on NHL trade deadline day, have agreed on a deal that will send defenseman Aaron Ward to the Anaheim Ducks for goaltender Justin Pogge and a fourth-round draft pick.

"It is tough, no matter the stage of the career you're at," Ward said today. "When you're a young guy you're always nervous about going to a new team. When you're an older guy there's still that level of anxiety going to a new team but there's also a consideration when you have a family.

"I've got three kids. One's in school right now and I need to go grab him before someone tells him his dad is going cross-country. At the same time you have to feel fortunate you have job."

Ward is due to be an unrestricted free agent after the season. He was a healthy scratch Tuesday in the game in Toronto.

The conditional fourth-round pick originally belonged to the
Boston Bruins. The Canes will receive the pick in either 2010
or 2011.

With #4 and #7 gone, there

With #4 and #7 gone, there won't be so many gripes on this forum about the slow/old/non-scoring Canes defense.

and...

you can add Alberts to that list.  Watching him and Ward try and clear the zone this season has been sheer torture.

haha, amen!

haha, amen!

Quite a return for Wardo...a

Quite a return for Wardo...a guy who was available on the waiver wire for nothing earlier this season. Pogge is a depth goalie and the 4th rounder is a nice return. It looks like Whitney may be staying afterall.

Walker

Really hope that he has a good run in DC.

Great haul for Ward

I was shocked to see the Canes get a 4th round pick, and a goalie in Pogge for Ward. Even though Pogge will probably be nothing more than organizational depth at the position, it's nice to get him and a 4th round pick for Ward, who's pretty much done.

Now MOVE WHITNEY!!!

I don't think

this trade means Manny is going anywhere this season, though stranger things have happened. I think most likely they are bringing in someone to bolster the Checkers in the AHL for next year. It would not surprise me if Cam and Justin Peters are the Canes' regular goalies next year given how well Peters has played this year, unless they keep Peters in Charlotte just to get more PT.

Goalie go-round

Does this imply Manny might be going?

This means Manny won't be

This means Manny won't be resigned for next season and they will rely on Peters as a backup (they have probably seen enough in 4 games). Pogge will be in Charlotte together with Murphy.

Pretty decent haul for Ward.

Pretty decent haul for Ward. Pogge is pretty much a bust, but the 4th rounder is good.

POGGE AND POTENTIAL

Pogge is likely to be in Charlotte next season; but he has potential.  The Hurricanes organization does an excellent job of nurturing young players who have been under-appreciated elsewhere.  I am not suggesting Pogge will be challenging Cam Ward for playing time next season; but I think he will be a player who can contribute if another set of disasters strike our goalies as occurred this season.

I totally agree, I think

I totally agree, I think Pogge at some point will burst out.  His career potential a few years ago was very high, but he hasn't played up to it since 06 juniors.

I think we cultivate our goaltenders very well, and always have, and with Barrasso helping out I think Pogge has the potential to get back to where he should be.
