Canes-Rats affiliation to continue?

Bookmark and Share

Will the Hurricanes be affiliated with the Albany River Rats next season? Good question.

General manager Jim Rutherford had this to say about the American Hockey League team:

"In all likelihood we will be affiliated with Albany this season. We will know in the next few weeks."

Odds are, the Canes will continue with that affiliation. And while Rutherford does not want to comment further, the guess here is that it's possible it will be the last season the Canes and Rats are affiliated.

How about this: the Hurricanes buying an AHL team, putting it in Charlotte and expanding its "footprint" in the state? Seems like that would make sense.

The Rats have been the Hurricanes

The Rats have been the Hurricanes’ American Hockey League partner the past three years, but that really hasn’t been enough time to establish the pipeline between Albany and Raleigh.

Piper Needed

I think if the rats infestation continue, we would probably need to pay Peter Piper to lure down away into the river and drown themselves. However, with all that evolution going on, I'm not convinced that rats will die drowning, they probably learnt how to swim.

I certainly hope that the Hurricanes will continue to be affiliated with the River Rats next season. Not sure whether they are AHL ready, though, I guess only time will tell. Kahuki Sites

Not so simple

It's funny reading the posts how people think money grows on trees. What dummy would go out and buy an AHL franchise for this state? For any state, for that matter? Not a wise investment.

Moving a team to Charlotte sounds good but how expensive is it to turn on the lights at TWC Arena and put the curtain up? Plus, the travel expense in the AHL is huge and moving a team south makes no sense. While it would be good for the Canes to have a team nearby, not sure if Dave Andrews would support it.

Hockey is dead in Greensboro and not enough $$$$$ in Winston-Salem to support it. Heck, there's barely enough $$$$ in Raleigh for the parent club (see weeknights during the season where less than 10,000 actually show up).

Our team, our tradition.

Sometimes moving a hockey team south makes sense

A lot of people thought it was a bad idea to move a hockey team from Hartford to Raleigh. You could argue that the Hurricanes are the exception that proves the rule - look at the Coyotes' troubles, for example - but you can't blame JR&PK if they're thinking what they did at the NHL level might work at the AHL level, too.

I hope they continue I love

I hope they continue I love going to River Rats games. If not, hopefully someone else signs on as an affiliate with them.

weeknight games

"(see weeknights during the season where less than 10,000 actually show up)"

Wow, sounds like you haven't been to a weeknight game in like 4 or 5 years.

Albany has had some of the

Albany has had some of the worse attendance in the A.H.L. Even when they had Calder cup playoffs two years ago they could not draw a crowd. They drew some of there best crowds playing home games at Glens falls, not in Albany. This season the Rats having a big season ticket promotion and are banking on a Adirondack Phantom , Albany River Rat rivalry to spark attendance. I don't think that the twelve games between the new rival fifty miles to there north in Glens Falls will make up for the whole season. I think that Glens Falls will pull from what crowd Albany has during the non rival games. While I would love to see the Rats stay in Albany. I think this will be their last season in NY. If overall attendance does improve with the phantom, rats rivalry it will probably go down again if the Phantoms relocate as planned in Allentown,PA. But that relocation may not happen and Glens Falls may become the phantoms new home for some time. Either way if attendance is not up the rats will be gone.

As someone who

has lived here in Winston area for all but 20 years now, I did see the monarchs & the generals play...compared with the everblades...they didn't play at the same caliber as the everblades. If i had a voice or had Jr's ear, I'd say Charlotte. As Winston has had a couple of SPHL Teams in the last 6-7 years and they really aren't all that hot or have quality players on a "consistent" basis. i did go to several games this year because the Joel where they do play is near my house. But in comparing the ECHL & the AHL caliber players...I would say and plead with the JR & Mr. Karmanos to pick Charlotte...and even from here in Winston, I am sure the promotions dept. at the RBCC can find a way to work out package deals for bus trips to and from the tirade...as when i was living in Spokane we had one travel agency that had bus trips from Spokane to Calgary many times...and the buses ( some times 2-3 bus loads, but the average was 2 bus loads) were full...so if there was AHL Hockey coming to North Carolina, despite the economy...then Charlotte is the best bet. I know that if the RBCC promo dept. could work out a package deal for bus trips for Canes home games it would or might be slow at first depending on the prices and seat locations...especially coming from Winston area...but after it caught on...the canes or the AHL affiliate wouldn't have to offer any racy pictures of "stormy" in a speedo to get things going to draw crowds to get the ball rolling...uhhh on second thought...i hope the promotions department never ever offers " racy pictures" of stormy in a speedo !!

But i can see that and while The River rats are a good fit at present time ...but yes logistics with the economy is a point to be seriously considered...

esteban rolls off and heads for the kitchen...waiting for more news of the Canes, Rats...

Go Canes !!

Greensboro Colisseum...

...is too big and too expensive for an ECHL team and even for an AHL team unless the folks there turned out in numbers far greater than they ever have before. I talked with Jim Rutherford about that several years ago and that was his thought.

For ECHL Winston-Salem would likely make more sense as the arena is more suitable but it would have to be well-run and promoted to draw enough.

Charlotte would be a better choice for moving up to AHL and the demographics are similar to Raleigh but with more people to draw on. Norfolk has attractions, too.

Good point about Winston

That is a good point about Winston being a better home for the ECHL team.  It would work better financially and would still attract some interest from Greensboro.

Echl in Winston ??

Only if they had quality players on a "consistant" basis...and not having cage(ice rink) fights all the time...Winston is a large enough community, but i'd be leary of it. due to the lack of turn out for the SPHL games...

Furthermore

With his shiny new player development title, Ron Francis will be commuting between Raleigh and the affiliate sites more often. Would the Canes buy a team and move closer to home just to save RF some time on the road?

I've seen enough to know

I've seen enough to know that Greensboro won't support a hockey team any more. No matter what you build, they won't come in large enough numbers to keep it afloat. Add to that, the Greensboro Coliseum is deeply in the red every year and would have to ask for more rent $$ and a bigger cut of the ticket and concession sales than any hockey team would be willing to give.

Hockey in Greensboro isn't

Hockey in Greensboro isn't going to happen. This is a long-winded explanation.
I've been living in Greensboro for 19 years, and I've seen a lot of hockey in this town. Unfortunately, not many other people have.
People loved the ECHL Generals, but the bottom line is that people were showing up to the games just to see the fighting, which was, and still is in abundance in the ECHL. When the Panthers had their AHL affiliate here for the 95/96 and 96/97 seasons, things didn't go well. Attendance was poor and the fans didn't like the skill level of the players. They still wanted to see fighting rather than skating.
We all know how horrible the attendance was when the Canes were here. That doesn't need to be rehashed.

A few years later, there was another ECHL team in town, but they couldn't stay afloat. By the end of it, the staff weren't even getting paid. And the league certainly wasn't getting its dues and whatnot. As much as some people would appreciate it, it's just not going to work in Greensboro.

The last go-round here in town, some of the players would come to my restaurant (less than a mile from the Coliseum) and hand out free tickets. They would do the same thing all over town and they still couldn't get anybody to show up for games. Some of the players told me that on weeknight games, they were lucky to get 200 people in the stands.

I suppose people will call me a pessimist, but this isn't a case of "build it and they will come".

The last go-round, some of the deepest pockets in Greensboro were involved in the Generals, but they were a financial disaster. If I remember correctly, Greensboro was already in trouble with the ECHL to begin with for previous debt. They were forgiven that, but they piled some more debt on top of that.

I don't think any hockey league will touch Greensboro because of our past troubles and our outstanding debt. That's reason alone to say that it won't work.

unfortunatly that all

unfortunatly that all sounds about right.

what a lot of people dont get too, is the buy in for echl and ahl affiliation is sometimes worth more than the team itself.

richmond had that problem with the renegades several years ago.  the team would play well and draw a decent number, but if they werent any good people fled in droves and the team, which was likely near breaking even was then losing money in bunches... most of which was going just to carry the ECHL flag.

i bet rutherford would love to have a nearby team in greensboro, but it makes no financial sense.  charlotte is established and has a team, and  a nice arena... plus the 2-3hour drive could have call ups in no time.

don't forget about the in

don't forget about the in columbia!!!

Bring em to CLT

Has anyone here been to Time Warner Arena in Charlotte? I caught a Checkers game there last season and the place is sweet. It's all state of the art brand new stuff. I'm sure that if they wanted to move an AHL team to the state then they would wanna put them in the best facility. Plus I go to Charlotte a lot and would love to see both teams!

Why not both?

I'd love to see the Hurricanes have a Charlotte AHL team (keep the Checkers name!) and Greensboro gets the current Charlotte ECHL team, with a Hurricanes affiliation.

Will Charlotte and G'boro be ok with being farm cities to the Triangle? Not sure, but Charlotte is well served for professional sports (assuming the Bobcats stay in town. And the Triad isn't exactly a hockey mecca, though they were gracious hosts to the Canes in the early years.

Players skating elsewhere in the state and working their
way up to the mother ship (RBC Center) would be a way to increase interest in the team and and the sport across the state.

I've been saying this for

I've been saying this for years. Not only does it make sense from a logistic stand point (i.e. having replacement parts close at hand) but it's a fantastic marketing tool. Chartered bus trips from Raleigh to Charlotte to watch the AHL team play. Trips from Charlotte to Raleigh to watch the big league team play. Expanding the team presence in the Charlotte area which will only help get more games on TV, get more fans at the games, and generate more money.

It would be a nice gesture to have the team in Greensboro, but from a financial standpoint it makes much more sense for the AHL team to be in Charlotte. With that said, what about the ECHL affiliate moving to Greensboro? The team already owns the Everblades (or was that Thewes, can't remember). I know that the Everblades own their own rink, which they won't in Greensboro. That said, it would be great if all hockey in North Carolina were Hurricane Hockey in some shape or form. It just makes good sense. Make the Canes North Carolina's team, not just Raleigh's and watch the fan base grow.

And this is why Charlotte makes sense over Norfolk

Good points in above post.  Although Norfolk is "AHL ready", the market doesn't match well.

Interestingly, the AHL president was on XM Homeice this morning.  He was talking about the value of stability of franchise locations, but admitted they will always have some movement.  There was also discussion about the value of having teams close to the parent.

AHL Locations

Greensboro has already had 2 AHL teams (Monarchs and Generals) over the last couple decades and both eventually folded. I don't think there is enough interest there for an AHL team. Charlotte already has an ECHL team. For me, the most logical choice would be to have the Norfolk Admirals as our affiliate. It's close by and already in an established market.

Correction

Correction to my own post....if memory serves both the Generals and the Monarchs were ECHL not AHL.

I sort of think

I sort of think the team owes a big one to Greensboro and it's hockey fans....

I realize that everyone here in Raleigh likes to try and forget about the Greensboro days... and it wasn't the finest moment of this franchise.... But if the City of Greensboro had not given the 'Canes a place to play when they came to NC they they may not have made it here at all....

Bring an AHL team to G'boro.....

charlotte

If I was a betting man, I'd bet on Charlotte. Just saying

were you winking when you

were you winking when you typed that?

my first question was

my first question was charlotte, greensboro or even richmond va... they are looking for a hockey team.

Better Yet...

Bring it to Greensboro. Charlotte already has the Checkers.

Greensboro misses the Generals!
