Before leaving this week for the NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Mich., Canes general manager Jim Rutherford had a number in mind.
Rutherford believed about seven or eight of the Canes' prospects would be invited to the team's training camp that starts this weekend. But two days in Traverse City — and two victories — have changed his mind.
"Based on my talks with our people here, I think that number may get to 10," Rutherford said today by phone.
It's just that so many of the Canes' prospects have performed well in 5-3 wins over the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings. Mike Murphy has been stellar in goal, while such players as Zach Boychuk, Drayson Bowman and Brandon Sutter have done what was expected of them.
"Murphy has been really good, but he's been good everywhere he's been in his career," Rutherford said. "He's given us a chance to win both games.
"Last night, against a Red Wings team that's a little older, they were really going in the first period but he kept us in the game. He's very quick and he's very focused."
Rutherford said there had been no big surprises, noting Boychuk, Sutter and Bowman had played well. Chris Terry, he noted, "has played extremely well."
Rutherford has been pleased with the effort and effectiveness of defensemen Jamie McBain and Michal Jordan.
"Jordan has really come a long way in the last year," Rutherford said. "We've seen a big jump in his development."
The Canes' top draft pick this year, forward Philippe Paradis, played better in the second game than the first, Rutherford said, as he adapted to the speed of the game against older players.
"This is a big jump for the guys just drafted and it's hard to get a real good handle on them," he said. "The Red Wings, for example, had a Swedish player who's 23. It's a big jump in terms of the pace of play.
"Philippe has played the way he's supposed to. He's played a physical game, been ion the puck, playing the body."
The Canes will have a light practice today, then face Atlanta on Wednesday. The tournament ends with a game Thursday.
