Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford has his opinion on how to improve his team's woeful power play: simplify.
"What I see is that we'll try one thing and if it doesn't work, we try something different," Rutherford said. "We'll try five different things and if they don't work, we go back to the first thing again and try it again.
"We need to stick to a plan. We need to simplify. We need to go back to the basics -- get pucks to the net, tip it, get people in front of the net, get the rebounds."
The Canes have failed to score on their last 25 power plays and have scored just once in their last 34. Entering Monday night's NHL games, Carolina was 29th in the league in power-play production at 12.9 percent.
"Special teams can win or lose games for you and the power play has cost us a handful of games," Rutherford said. "Most special teams have their ups and downs, but our power play is about as low as it can get."
Rutherford noted that Ron Francis, the Canes' assistant general manager and an NHL Hall of Famer, could become more involved in working with the power-play units.
"We have the resources. We have the players," Rutherford said. "It's a matter of time, but it's not happening now."

Take a Lesson from Burke
Wed, 12/03/2008 - 00:18 — JRs_FaultI initially took my screen name here in reference to the gang-blame that so often dominates this blog... moving from JR to Friesen (and now, it seems, to Laviolette).
Then I listened to Brian Burke's press conference a few days ago when he formally took over the Leafs GM job.
Now I'm leaning toward actually blaming JR.
Burke explained in very simple terms how he likes to put together a team, a model of balance that JR could wisely emulate. Look at the Ducks team he leaves behind and you can see all of these principles at work:
"My philosophy is based upon 3 pillars :
1. Entertaining style- justify the price of the ticket win or lose, aggressive pursuit of the puck in all three zones, prefer to possess the puck, answering physical challenges; playing a style that allows younger players to develop in fear free environment
2. Financial and fiscal prudence-at the end of the day it is the fans and sponsors money and we try to spend it intelligently – it’s a cornerstone- doesn’t matter if you are profitable or not, you spend money as wisely as we can, its not my money.
3. Community service – not optional you want to play in a great city like Toronto you will give back to the community or we will find you somewhere else to play. Player will be more active then they have ever been before and if you don’t like it you will not play here."
"we believe in a top 6 forward group that has high skill level and the bottom six that have plumber mentality, being physical and blocking shots. Same with defense, the top 4 are skilled and the bottom 2 are plumbers. I have great respect for the plumber groups
I believe you build team from net out.
My teams all have the proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone truculence and belligerence ."
JR's teams (in the post-lockout era) have been built for speed and little else... he got it right the first season, because he was ahead of the curve in understanding what impact the new rules would have on the game. His bottom 6 are mostly made of guys that are basically Top 6 guys at lower levels that either are not, or never will be Top 6 NHL'ers.... not enough "plumbers".
Unfortunately, when a team built for speed gets beat down by injuries (as happened last year, I'm not going to give him that pass this year... several teams are faring as bad or worse) they lose that edge. A team built for speed has also lost much of the advantage it briefly had against larger (and, by definition, slower) opponents. Too many teams now have managed to get Big AND Fast... a valuable combo. Our Big Fast Top Draft pick was a bust (Mr. Ladd), but fortunately that has turned into Ruutu, who is playing in our Top 6, but would actually be one of Mr. Burke's "plumbers".
This year's Canes have not gelled into a unit, and the PP is the most obvious example of it. It was a joy to watch the 05-06 team bring the puck up the ice... ever since then, it seems if they fail on the first few tries in a game... they dump it for the rest of the night, or worse they turn it over in the neutral zone.
Having said all that, JR is PK's boy and I don't see him going anywhere soon. JR is also capable of being an Exec of the Year in this league... he needs to accept the fact that the type of team that could win it all just 3 years ago, is not the type of team it takes now that GM's/Coaches have figured out a new balance that will succeed more consistently.
cane fans???
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 22:15 — greg_98wow such whining and the season is 1/4 thru, the only way to satisfy yall is to win every game, changing coaches now is ricidiculos and would not help the cane playoff hopes, there is plenty of time for this team to come together and be competitive
To Greg-98
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 23:16 — esteban1949The season is 1/4 of the way through. But you forget 2 simple things.
 1. The vast majority of the 'whiners & complainers" are long time Season Ticket Holders. And like any other Business or form of entertainment. people including yourself do expect something for their money...do you not ? after all when was the last time you went to a car repair shop and handed the person behind the counter 200.00 for work they never did ? you wouldn't do it ...would you ?
 2. If the team ( the canes) can't find some kind of " consistant" play...then and before all of us know it...the season is 1/2 over with...and it puts even more pressure on everyone...So and while your point is and may very well be vaild, but unless you can or care to walk a mile or 2 in the shoes of the long time STH's...them please join me and the rest of us " fans" and try to enjoy what you can when you can...or is that asking a wee bit much before Christmas ?
Not that you are wrong...or don't have the right or freedom to have your say...but try looking at it from all sides and not just one...Have a good week...
Go Canes !!
This is NASCAR country
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 16:15 — figaroThis is NASCAR country right? If you don't have good parts (players) the engine (team) don't run. If you don't have a good driver (coach) you don't win. There 'ya go. Time for a complete overhaul...
Rowe v. Boudreau
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 16:04 — NetMinderI agree ... no comparison.
At the same time, though, Rowe is our AHL guy and he's waiting in the wings. So, in that sense, he's our Bruce Boudreau, and it's pretty obvious why he's here instead of in Albany. JR had it up to here with Laviolette last year. This year, he's seeing what we're all seeing ... a team that is frustratingly inconsistent.
The cup season was a touch of post lockout brilliance by JR and Laviolette. They came out of the lockout with an uptempo team that beat many of the other teams to the punch. Well, the other teams have figured it (and us) out. Many of them are just as fast, just as skilled and twice as big. Yet, we're still trying to play the same system ... and it isn't working.
Rowe is JR's ace-in-the-hole and he's going to play that card.
Agree 100 percent
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 18:37 — scomilLaviolette's time has passed. We will always enjoy looking back to what he accomplished here. Right now, we need what Rowe brings. He has gotten the most of his talent in Albany and his players have had the utmost respect for him. He's going to make sure that opponents do show respect for his players. That's what we need now.
The Cup in Carolina is History
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 13:44 — gsmacconnellSome random thoughts on the Canes and JR's comments:
*JR should look in the mirror for the problem. He created the team.
*As a STH we have not gotten what we paid for in three years. I don't expect the cup every year but I expect effort. Ten minutes of effort in a hockey game does not add up to wins. How about if we pay 1/6 of the ticket price?
*Give me Ruutu, Walker, Larose, Seidenberg, Wallin, and a bunch of AHLers. We'd win as many games and it would be fun to watch.
*Lance Armstrong has more Kahunies than most of the Canes.
*I vote for the Lady Bing award to be awarded to the Canes. They can't score and they don't fight except for Brookbank and Walker.
*The only thing Kristi Yamagochi and Brett Hedican left behind was memories of Dancing with the Stars, and we are reminded of it every time the Canes play.
*How many nights did Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, or Gordie Howe take off?
*How about the long promised All Star Game...JR. It would be nice to watch some players that care.
*The reason other teams take our players out, is because they can. Most of our players don't have enough respect for their own team mates to stick up for them when there is a cheap shot. (not you Scottie Walker). Also relates to the Kahunie problem. Howe and Orr never shied away from mixing it up.
*Give the players a PMS (attitude) pill and maybe we would see some hockey.
*Again we are on track to not make the playoffs.
*I'd be ok with one of the Canes dating one of my daughters.....they can't score, even on a power play.
*I vote for the Canes led by JR to go on strike. We can all save our money until the economy improves.
Brilliant
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 17:08 — Godman459Perfect summation of what is going on, especially with the inability to "score" stuff. Nice!
Yep

I think it will be Rowe
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 13:23 — gmwannabeeJeff Daniels going to Albany meant one thing...Rowe was here to be ready to take over if needed. I think it is getting close. JR has made some great moves for us fans over the years. I think we should have gotten bigger and tougher during the off season though. And..I think that could have been done with some guys in Albany. If Rowe takes over..look for Gillies to be here. Here is Leightons chance with Ward hurt. Can he carry the team some nights? This team has no vision...too many players out of the same mold. I do think that some of the best parts of last season were the enthusiastic play of Albany call ups. I give Rowe credit for that...and feel he has the vision to lead this team and use HIS style. I am tired of seeing us getting waxed at home. JR...I know why you brought Rowe here. I think it is time....
JR-Coach-PP-Size Matters
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 11:11 — NetMinderJR is about to do what the Caps did last year ... fire the coach and hand the job to the guy who coached the AHL team. Tom Rowe is our Bruce Boudreau. Look for the bald guy to move up.
Considering that the Canes can't gain the zone 5 on 4, putting us on the PP is a defensive strategy that virtually ensures 2 minutes without a Carolina Hurricanes goal. Woo-woo!
Compared to the size and strength of the Ducks, the Canes looked like mighty mites. Wasn't the whole point in the off season to get bigger and add strength down the middle?
I've got news for you
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 14:39 — caniac11Tom Rowe is not our Bruce Boudreau. Bruce took two teams to the Calder Cup Championship in the AHL and he won the Calder Cup one year. Tom Rowe - zero Calder Cup finals and zero championships. In fact, Tom only won one AHL playoff series the entire time he was in Albany.
Sure, the call ups last year were good. But good doesn't mean you can win a championship.
If Tom gets the job, I predict the Canes will go further down hill.
Give us a break, Jimmy
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 11:05 — Sun"We have the resources. We have the players," Rutherford said.
Translation: "Don't blame me, blame the coach!!"
Pathetic - and totally incorrect, as well. You assembled this team, take some frakin responsibility for once.
Agreed
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 20:51 — Nico37Throwing the coach under the bus, very classy.
We're going to end up just like the NY Islanders - losing an excellent coach b/c of the GM's faults.
It's unbelievable that any fair-minded person could look at this lineup (to say nothing of our weak prospect pool, which is, of course, the doing of the GM as well) & think we're in the same class as Washington, Philadelphia, Montreal, Pittsburgh, etc (all of whom have far superior prospects to the Canes, too). We won't even start w/ the Western teams - but I truly believe if Nashville played in this division, they'd seriously challenge the Caps b/c David Poile knows what he's doing (& they're even cheaper than us!). We use the draft to stock Prickly Pete's darling Plymouth Whalers & do we ever have the NHL team to prove it!
As for the comment (can't remember commenter's name, sorry) about media in other markets holding the team more accountable, I agree with that, too. Luke does a very good job in his columns of writing honestly about the team, but that's about it. Forslund makes critical observations & will take them to task - on the radio, that is, rarely on TV. As for the others (Tripp, Chip & the rest) they're either clueless or shameless homers.
Hubris, JR - hubris...
Totally true
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 17:51 — joesmo18I couldn't agree more. What a total cop out. He needs to man up and admit his mistakes. He's probably still banging his head on his desk about the Staal contract. Wondering what he was thinking. Time to go back to the drawing board and gather some players that want to play and actually have some chemistry together.
getting set up
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 09:02 — rmmeliThe biggest problem (that Jim Rutherford never mentioned) seems to be their collective inability to get set up in the zone in the first place. The mindless approach that they use (presumably dictated to them by the coaching staff) over and over again that does not work is simply stupid. It doesn't take a Ron Francis to spot that. There is no creativity in the approach to get the puck in the zone and that lack of creativity runs through the whole of the team play from 5 on 5 stupid dump and chase to the PK where they seem to be the only team in the NHL that is incapable of even thinking about trying to score a short-handed goal.
Respect for Lavi
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 08:39 — HockeydogI'm sure Mr Rutherford kept his nose out of the powerplay until this point out of respect for the coach. I'm sure he saw the same things we did, but as a GM there is a line that should be crossed with care regarding the way a team is coached. You could say that by suggesting Ronnie Francis could become more involved with the powerplay units Mr Rutherford is prepared to cross that line.
I agree that JR's comments
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 10:03 — CanarseI agree that JR's comments are a signal. They are a signal that he is not happy with the coaching. I think Laviolette would already be gone if JR had his way. PK doesn't want to pay for the guy to sit at home.Â
I thought Francis was already involved with the PP?Â
Say what you will about coaching, but the team doesn't have a guy tough enough to stand in front of the net. They also don't have a guy on the half boards with a scary shot. They lack skill and size and it shows.
Paying for someone to sit at home
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 14:13 — mumsyb13Whatever the solution may be, PK may pay a bigger price if the fans sit at home and don't show up for games.
Re: Paying for someone to sit at home
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 17:56 — joesmo18Thats true, but I wonder if it would help if we actually had a media market that was more wide-spread and on top of what was going on with the Hurricanes. Another words, hold the team more liable in the public arena. That way, changes with the team might be a bit quicker... Just a thought.
Dear Chip
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 08:35 — esteban1949Please sir...take what we all have said to JR with the disclaimer that while we fans may not know everything..but for those who have watched in the seats and on TV see what isn't going on. Now that doesn't mean we the fans or JR is lying, but obviously one of the two needs to get their eyes checked. i again say that I am as one voice am not trying to be mean spritied, have an ugly attitude, but I do sympathise with the loyal anf faithful STH who feel they are NOT getting what they paid for. And if it does come down to business..and NOT family entertainment ...the When the Circus comes to town the next time RBC can expect a sellout compared to the Canes, and the play of the team as a whole. As i do like and appreciate the efforts of players like Sutter, LaRose,Dwyer who and while are still trying to prove themselves...have played with more heart and soul than some of the "other" healthy players who have been on the ice. grant you none of them are super stars (yet) but i'd rather have a team made up of little people like those 3 and play their hearts out, than to have last years Redwing type of team today here in carolina who are like a car with clogged fuel injectors one week,a dropped cylinder the next, and so on. Grant you players like Sutter and even Zach Boychuk have a ways to go before they reach their peak...yet it feels that because of thier intencity of play...far out weighs any stats they may lack...but again...I am no expert...we the fans rely on JR, the Coach, and ALL The players to give 1000% yet for the monies paid ...the fans are getting gyped..even the Chicago Cubs when they'd fall on their faces in the late 60's & 70's played their hearts out...that is why even when they lost terribly the fans were dragging their feet in having to leave, because the fans knew they were there to see the best the team had, not the left overs...I appreciate your efforts Chip, and i am thankful i don't have your job, because like being a professional sports figure and a cop on the beat...no matter what you say or do...it is never good enough is it ?
Go Canes !
This team is broken. No
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 03:42 — VThis team is broken. No chemistry, coaching sucks, and nobody in the org is doing anything about it.
Clock's ticking...
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 10:34 — GENOsounds like a coaching change is on the table.
JR on the Power Play
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 01:32 — abramsdougIt is a positive sign as far as I am concerned that JR is voicing his views on the power play. Obviously, getting decent shots with bodies in front of the net and getting rebounds are all essential. I disagree that the Hurricanes' power plan plans seem to be variable; but JR is truly an expert. It is conceivable that the fans in the stands and watching on tv are all mistaken; but I doubt it. Unless my eyes are lying to me, there hasn't been much creativity in the power play. Neither have my eyes seen angry Hurricanes hanging around the net pounding bodies, blasting in rebounds and blocking the view of the goalies. I have watched numerous NHL teams on Center Ice and their approach to and execution of the power play is dramatically different frin ours. Other NHL teams with effective power plays do keep the play simple; butamong other things they operate at an extremely high level of intensity in front of the net. JR please step in and find the team a beast who will bang bodies in front of the net and scoop up rebounds. Fixing the power play will remedy much of what ails the Hurricanes at the moment.
???
Tue, 12/02/2008 - 01:28 — WAStoutIt took you 34 PP's to figure that one out JR? Could have told you that last season.
