Canes make a few line changes

MONTREAL -- Dwight Helminen, recalled from the Albany River Rats after the injury to Brandon Sutter, was at practice today at the Bell Centre and centering the fourth line with Wade Brookbank and Dan LaCouture.

The Canes have made a few line changes, moving Matt Cullen to center on a line with Ryan Bayda and Patrick Eaves. Chad LaRose, who scored two goals in the 4-3 win over the New York Islanders, will play on Rod Brind'Amour's line with Sergei Samsonov.

Eric Staal's line remains the same with Tuomo Ruutu and Ray Whitney.

The defensive combinations, with Joni Pitkanen out with a knee injury, were: Tim Gleason-Joe Corvo, Niclas Wallin-Dennis Seidenberg and Anton Babchuk-Josef Melichar.

Cam Ward was first off the ice Monday and will start in goal Tuesday night against the Montreal Canadiens. Ward made a franchise-record 57 saves Saturday against the Islanders, who fired 60 shots on goal, but was surprised to learn he couldn't top his goal-tending coach, Tom Barrasso.

In a March 1989 game against the Chicago Blackhawks, the former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie had 57 saves in a 6-5 victory.

"I did not know that. That's kind of cool," a smiling Ward said.

Told that Barrasso faced more shots (62) but also gave up more goals, Ward joked, "I won't bring that up to Tommy. He's my pal."

As for the Islanders' onslaught, Ward said: "Obviously, we don't want to get used to giving up that many shots. I'm just happy we were able to hold on and seal the win."
