Canes expected to announce Staal deal

Bookmark and Share

The Hurricanes have called a news conference today at 2 p.m. to make a "major player announcement" and it's expected the team will announce star center Eric Staal formally has been signed to a long-term contract.

Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said Tuesday that a signing could come soon. No figures were disclosed. It's possible Staal could receive a seven-year contract that would pay the NHL All-Star between $7 million and $10 million a year.

Staal's agent, Rick Curran, was at the RecZone this morning as Staal and the other Hurricanes players worked out. Curran would not comment on the the press conference, but said he hoped "good news" would come out of it.

Breaking News

Raleigh, NC—Engineering students at NC State University today have anounced a major break through in temporal physics, thanks to the recently operational Large Hadron Collider which straddles the Swiss and French borders. While orginially constructed to smash protons and attempt to create dark matter, the collider, based in Switzerland, has made an even more astonishing breakthrough. Graduate engineering student at NC State Justin Thyme explains:

"Initially, the device was for pure research, and we were not sure that once activated, there would be anything discovered that offered practical applications so immediately. We were, in a word, wrong," says Thyme. "Once powered on, the collider began to create a "warble in the space time continuum, which while small, was significant. So, doing what any scientist and hockey fan would do...we chartered a Gulfstream V aircraft at RDU, grabbed Ron Francis and stowed him safely aboard, flew across the pond and immediately shoved him through the gash in the space-time fabric."

And to great effect. This afternoon back in Raleigh, the Carolina Hurricanes will be annoucing that Francis, currently a front-office asset to the team, will be making a change in position...back to the ice. Due to the side effects of this "gash in time," he will also be 22 years old once again. While a new contract must be signed, the Hurricanes are confident a mutually beneficial arrangement will be reached before the scheduled 2pm press conference.

More details as they become available. Luke, back to you...

You just reported it about a day ago, Chip. Remember?

The original blogpost

The original blogpost speculated that we were trading Kaberle; then it was edited to state the obvious.  So that's why my post doesn't make sense any more.
