Canes claim Nodl off waivers

The Canes have claimed forward Andreas Nodl on waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Nodl, 24, had one assist in 12 games for the Flyers this season and averaged 10:17 in ice time. He had 11 goals and 11 assists in 67 games last season.

Nodl, a native of Vienna, Austria, was a second-round pick (37th overall) by the Flyers in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Canes general manager Jim Rutherford noted Nodl, listed at 6-1 and 196 pounds, is a "young player who skates really well" and should add depth at forward.

one thing..

I don't think will ever happen, picking up one of Philly's goalies.  Talk about job insecurity!

A TRADE IS COMING?

Ok Nodl is a good waiver pick-up ,but Bobby Ryan is rumored to be on the market and makes 5.1m ,so Kaberle makes 4.25m ,not that the Ducks might want him ,but throw in a 2nd rnd pick and you have the top 6 forward that would make this team ALOT better and 850k is chump change ,if you figure that a average top 6 AHL forward makes about that much a year...Whatever combination to make it work imo would be worth the 850k ,he** the boost in ticket sales/concession's would be that much...What's to know here?

I'm not sure that

I'm not sure that Kaberle+2nd would get a team to take him off our hands for nothing in return, let alone get us a young first liner.

Kaberle

Kaberle is a detriment.  You have to add more to the trade if you want a team to take kaberle and his lack of production and big salary.  It would take a 1st and a star player to get Ryan and for a team to eat Kaberle's salary.

ANY COMBINATION

I did say any combination of UFA Dmen even a 1st rnd pick + Kabs or Gleason/Allen for a proven 1st line winger that would make this team a playoff team again...They would be hard pressed to balk at that offer.

I can't imagine a team

I can't imagine a team involving Kaberle in any trade.  He is older and with 2 years beyond this one still left on the contract, they would have to have some deep pockets because a buyout would almost be a certainty.

On the flip side, our 1st round pick should be a high one, at least a top 5 or better if things don't improve.  That would sweeten the deal.  Question is, would JR be willing to part with it for a guy who would be a great compliment to Staal and a known commodity?  Ryan hasn't had the best year, but he is a power forward who is young and has a lot of hockey left in him.  Reminds me of a Cole with a much higher upside.

That being said, we have had some solid success in the draft recently (Murphy, Skinner, Sutter, and the verdict is still out on Boychuk).  Paradis was a bust in 2009, but that was a weak draft outside the top 10.  Had we drafted in the 3-4 range that year, we could have picked between Kane and Duchesne.  Not bad.

Hearing the presser yesterday, this team lacks character in the dressing room.  Unless you think Ryan is of high character, you might be adding to the problem.  Given the budget, I don't know how you make this work unless you are willing to part with a young defenseman (Faulk), maybe Gleason, and some pretty high pick(s).  You could mix-match a young forward in there I guess but I don't know who that would be.

Thought for next Monday's question:  Who are the untouchables on this team/in this organization?

Trade

Not going to happen at that exchange.......Ryan had 71 points last year and was taken 2nd in the 2005 or 2006 draft. I bet it will take a 1st rounded and at least a player of significance (Kabs not it) to even make it to the table to talk, assuming they make a trade at all.......

Nodl

Head scratcher pick-up with so many young players on the Checkers that could have claimed a spot. Could another trade be in the works? JR's MO (pardon the pun) does not lend itself to a "block-buster" deal. He was burned a couple of times in his past to invest in high ticket folks........but, if ever he was to do something like a block-buster deal again now would certainly be the ideal time and also fit his "early worm" theory on trades before the deadline.

Kaberle is 3 year mistake

with probably a no-trade clause.  He can play at his salary level if he wants to, but I don't think he does.

Kaberle & Muller

One of the first challenges for Muller will be figuring out how to motivate Kaberle.  It's not simple.  Kaberle has lost the zip or enthusiasm for hockey more than anything else.  Muller, as I understand it, likes an up tempo, fast game.  Can Kaberle be a contributor?  We'll see soon enough.

He looked lost again. Trade

He looked lost again. Trade him somewhere for a 10th round pick.
