Canes can't win for losing

SUNRISE, Fla. -- When will it end?

Friday, against the Toronto Maple Leafs? The next day, at Columbus? Next week? Later in the month?

The Hurricanes will win another game at some point, but it's hard to guess when. Or how.

For those who may be wondering, the franchise had a 10-game winless streak within a season in 1993-94. From Oct. 16 to Nov. 6, 1993, the Hartford Whalers were 0-9-1.

Then there was the 1991-92 team. It was winless for 14 straight games.

This Hurricanes team, which now has Eric Staal sidelined for two to four weeks, now has been shut out three times after the 3-0 loss Wednesday to the Florida Panthers. It has scored more than two goals just three times and been outscored 41-17 in the 10-game losing streak and 14-2 in the last three games.

The Canes (2-9-3) had 21 shots, a season high for a period, in the first against the Panthers. But goaltender Tomas Vokoun, shelled by the Canes in the Panthers' 7-2 loss Oct. 9 at the RBC Center, turned back everything. Coming off a shutout of the St. Louis Blues, Vokoun added another.

"I thought we played well," goaltender Cam Ward said. "Obviously it's no secret we're having a tough time putting the puck in the net. I thought tonight we were more deserving of a better outcome, but we've just got to stick with it.

"But it's not easy when you're on a losing streak."

Center Jussi Jokinen said the Canes "played really good hockey" in the first period. Carolina had three power plays, spent most of the period in the Florida end and had some good looks, controlling the flow of the gam. But, of course, couldn't score.

After going the first 20 minutes without a penalty, the Canes had four in the second period. The Panthers didn't score on their four power plays and it was still scoreless after two periods, but Florida was growing stronger as the game went on.

"Obviously Vokoun played a great game," Jokinen said. "We couldn't find any holes. We had lots of good chances but we just couldn't score."

The Panthers did, three times, with the last an empty-netter. Florida now has won its last three games.

The Hurricanes will practice Thursday at the RecZone. But practice alone can't put the puck in the net. That has to happen come game time.

"Obviously it's tough," Jokinen said. "The only way to get out of this funk is work hard every day. If we can play like we did the first 30 minutes today we'll win lots of games."

But when?

The season seems over before it really got started!

With our current losing streak now extended to 10 games, and no indication that we can turn things around, it seems clear that this team was never prepared for the start of the season. That was obvious from the drop of the puck back on October 2nd. I think enormously of Paul Maurice--he's a class act and a quality person. However, ultimately he is responsible for making sure his team is ready to play--and they weren't. I don't envy JR's position--and he admittedly had a role in this mess--but at some point changes likely need to be made, probably starting at the top.

i went & checked

and the Florida Everblades do have a better record than the canes do...but they haven't played as many games as they are 3-4-2...hmmm...and they love to fight too !!

Go Canes !!

How Low is Low?

Watching last nights game, I can say the Canes showed some promise. But what I don't understand is how Coach Mo said he was going to give the 4th line more ice time. I guess he did to start but it tailed off during the game. Now that Boychuck is recalled, start playing the young guys by giving them more ice time. The veterans sure don't need it. It's time to rebuild but when will JR do it. This team is better being small and faster not big and slow. If a trade is eminent hopefully JR will get his moneys worth by doing this. If this team misses the playoffs, hopefully this team can bounce back with the talent it has coming up and we can get some young talent by trade or draft picks next year. But if coach Mo is fired after the season who out there would come in and take over.

Step up by stepping down

Geez, I hate to say this because I love the guy and will always wear his replica jersey proudly, but it's time for the Captain to step up by stepping down. For 2 years in a row he's been dead last in the NHL in +/-. His fitness level and work ethic are unquestionable, but his mobility is not at the NHL level any longer. It seems to me there are 2 reasons he's still around: 1) he's a fighter that doesn't quit, 2) the Hurricanes franchise is loyal to a fault. Both of those qualities are double-edged swords in this case.

This should be the first of several changes. But it would be a signal to the fanbase that the franchise is ready to turn the page and commit to rebuilding. And it would be another sign of leadership from a great leader. The image of Brind'amour lifting the Cup will be forever etched into my memory as a Canes fan. But that was then, this is now. Let's give Staal the C and start dealing with the current reality head on.

Even More Frustrating Is...

The fact that Mo still has a job.

I'm sorry, but if he were coaching any of the other 29 - he would be gone by now.

No. Not all his fault - but that is the risk of coaching - YOU are the fall guy in rough times. This IS a rough time.

Put the friendship aside and let's move forward to try and salvage this wreck.

When anger turns to apathy...

Right now it seems much of the fan base is angry and disgusted by this team. They have lost the capital gained with the deep playoff run. What's really dangerous is when anger turns to apathy...

And with the Coach giving lots of playing time to vets who aren't getting it done, while barely playing the kid who has scored our only two goals in the last three games, apathy is likely not far around the corner.

We've got kids with offensive potential, NOT safe bets like Dwyer and Ryen, sitting in Albany who would love to get a shot.

Rutherford can yak all he wants about maybe having to start an early youth movement. I see Brindamour, LaRose, Samsonov, and a host of others doing nothing out there. Sit some guys in the stands and let some of the younger guys come up and get a much needed fire lit under this team.

Taylor Hall Sweeps

It's pretty sad that we're not even through November and we're already in the Taylor Hall sweeps.

While I

As a fan have no real answer to what to do let alone how to do it, but after watching how the Canes did play with great energy for all of the first period...and slowly watch it drop off just after the second period progressed...it is times like these that tests the metal of not only the players, but we, the fans as well. As i got an email from my daughter ( the one in spokane who I by the ST's for) and she asked me what was wrong with the Canes ? And all i could tell her was that as hard as many, many of the canes players are working and playing their hearts out, it isn't jelling or coming together as they & we fans had hoped. She assured me that the worst that could happen is it gets worse...Just like having to wait for the Chicago Cubs to try to yet again make it into and win the world series...Maybe next time...and today is The Day !! Hope is a greeat thing...if that is all one has left huh ?

Go Canes !

Time to Begin Transition to a New Era of Hurricanes Hockey

It's a common dilemma for any organization: when to begin the transition from one generation of well-respected but aging players to the younger next generation. The answer is patently and painfully obvious -- the time is now. Every time of adversity and crisis is a time of opportunity. Sutter has proven he deserves at minimum to center the third line and absolutely deserves more ice time. Jokinen performed quite well on the first line as a center and has played well and intelligently all year. For whatever reason, some key veterans have struggled this year and their time on the ice is marred by mental mistakes and a lack of will of compete in the hard, dangerous spots on the ice. The key is to use this time of disastrous play to honestly and objectively assess the type of players needed for long-term success. It's not rocket science: the power play is totally unproductive and kills the momentum of the team. This failure has gone on for almost four years. It will take some new personnel to fix the lack of potency. Babchuk's emergence as a scoring defenseman last year salvaged a power play that was in a word awful. In his absence, the Hurricanes did not find an offensive defenseman who scored goals on the power play. Despite his tendency toward becoming frustrated and taking bad penalties, Pitkanen is a huge talent; but his skill is not the 100 mph slap shot. Ray Whitney and Jussi Jokinen are the Hurricanes' net presence. Both are excellent forwards but no other NHL team would view them as the players to post up in front of a goalie -- which speaks volumes about the lack of a power play. It's time to move some well-loved and well-respected veterans and to bring in some hungry, fresh faces. It doesn't take a total rebuild, but it does involve some very painful decisions. Bring up some of the young players from Albany. Begin by putting Brind'Amour on the fourth line. Healthy scratch Wallin and bring up some speed and intensity from Albany -- even if players like McBain ideally would be allowed to mature a year in Albany. I'd try Boychuk on the third line and on power plays. If the experiment takes, I would bring up Bowman as well. The worst that could happen is the Hurricanes stay in the cellar and are able to get a top three pick next year -- hopefully a game changer forward who matches well with Staal. It's a low risk, high upside approach. It is also a critical time in the franchise's history. If the Hurricanes management choose the prudent course of re-vamping the team, Hurricanes fans have to embrace the decision and support the team. Inevitably younger players will make some amazing plays as well as some truly mind-bogglingly poor plays. I know I will be excited to see the raw talent on the ice and am ready to cheer for a team in the throes of transition. I prefer that approach to the present approach of a team struggling to get its veterans to crash the net and play each shift as if it were their last shift in the NHL.

Look no further than what

Look no further than what the Chicago Blackhawks have managed to do.  They put their youth out there and it has worked well.

Definitely won't work with this poor coaching staff however.

Agreed

It's always hard to rebuild and is for most teams and fans.  I believe we have a lot of great talented players down in the AHL right now.  We will probably hear of a trade or two either today or early next week.  I feel like I might be buying a new jersey in the next two weeks though.  I know I'm going to travel up to Raleigh for at least 20 games a year.  One thing that I think people need to know is that we are not going to suck as bad as Pittsburgh.  We will not have five top 5 picks in a row.  We have drafted better than that and have players that have been waiting a couple of years to play.  Look at teams like Colorado and New York Islanders and they are pretty surprising playing the amount of youngsters they have. They also have like one or two veterans like Doug Weight or Adam Foote to help them.  Is the season lost already? Probably not.  Do we have a chance to make the playoffs? Could with a 10 game winning streak.  Go Canes.
