The Carolina Hurricanes have obtained defenseman Derek Joslin from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for future considerations.

Joslin, 23, has played in 17 games with San Jose this season, totaling one goal, three assists (4 points) and eight penalty minutes.

"Derek is a young defenseman who will add depth to our organization," general manager Jim Rutherford said.

The Richmond Hill, Ont., native is in his third NHL season, and has totaled one goal and six assists (7 points) and 26 penalty minutes in 53 career NHL games, all with San Jose.

Joslin, listed at 6-1 and 210 pounds, had 32 points (5g, 27a) in 55 American Hockey League (AHL) games with Worcester last season.
