MONTREAL
-- Maxim Lapierre's goal in the sixth round of a shootout gives the Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 victory Tuesday at the Bell Centre.

Canadiens goalie Carey Price made great shootout saves on Bryan Rodney in the fifth round and Matt Cullen in the sixth to finish it off. The Habs (10-11-0) have won eight times in overtime or a shootout this season.

A high-sticking penalty on the Canadiens' Jaroslav Spacek at 3:01 of overtime -- Spacek hitting and cutting defenseman Joe Corvo -- put the Canes (3-12-5) on the power play. Carolina fired away at Price, time and again, from the outside and in tight, but Price made every stop to take it to a shootout.

A goal by the Canadiens' Andrei Kostitsyn with 2:46 left in the third period tied the score 2-2 just when it appeared the Canes would grind out a gutsy win in regulation. Kostitsyn circled behind the goal and beat goaltender Manny Legace with a backhander.

 Earlier...

Brandon Sutter and Jussi Jokinen have notched second-period goals as the Canes have taken a 2-1 lead after the second, but goaltender Michael Leighton has left the game with an apparent injury.

Sutter, thriving on the top line, scored his fifth goal of the season for a 1-1 tie early in the second period. Sutter beat goaltender Carey Price on a give-and-go with Whitney off the rush at 3:28 of the second.

After sitting out a penalty, Matt Cullen set up Jokinen for a one-timer on the right wing at 6:20. Both Sutter and Jokinen scored in the 5-4 shootout win over Minnesota on Sunday.

Leighton left the game with a lower-body injury after making a lunging save on a Jaroslav Spacek shot with 12:48 left in the second. Manny Legace has taken over.

It took the Canadiens 5:41 in the first to get their first shot on goal. Max Pacioretty also put it past Michael Leighton for a 1-0 lead.

Pacioretty was to Leighton's left and Leighton shaded him to the shortside post, only to have Pacioretty sling the puck off the tip of his stick to the far side. It was Pacioretty's second goal of the season.

Each team had a first-period power play but didn't get a good scoring chance. The Canes' Chad LaRose had a good shorthanded chance but Habs goalie Carey Price made the stop with a sweep of the glove.

Price also made a nice save on an Erik Cole shot from the slot midway the period.

Drasticity

Hello to all in Caniac Nation,

Drasticity, yes you will not find this in Websters, my definition: The art of salvaging a hockey season with a team and managment that seem to be in "Bizzaro Land".

One point is better than none, two would have been better, two would have been the confidence boost the team needs, but phrases such as would have been, should have been, or could have been is in the distant past and JR holds the keys to the future.

Go Canes !!

Fri Oct 9, 2009

was the date of the last Hurricanes win in regulation. And their only win in regulation this year. Or one regulation win in 20 games.

Didn't Brind'amour win a

Didn't Brind'amour win a game in a shootout last season? I think it was Philly. Or maybe it was the season before.

Anytime, I think it's interesting that we rarely, if ever, see Cole in a shootout. There was a time when he was deadly in breakways or solo rushes. Haven't seen that in a long time.

Pretty sure it was the year

Pretty sure it was the year before, and yes it was Philly.  It was a fluke goal.  The puck popped up, and ended up bouncing off the goalie's back.

That was a special case that Brindy was in an SO.  It was his "old team".    Brindy is not the "go to" guy for SO.

To give perspective, in his career he has 4 goals on 10 shots.  Jack Johnson (yes, THAT JJ), has 5 goals on 10 shots.  And Jussi, our hero, has leads the league in 25 goals on 46 shots.

See http://www.nhlshootouts.com/CareerShootersMostShots.htm

All of us here

do have "different" perspectives on the situation with the Canes as a whole of how to tweak this, change that, shift and rearrange lines & players ... But the one thing all of us do agree on 99.9999% of the time is that the Canes as a whole, are NOT playing up to the standards and levels They Know, We the Fans Know that they can and are capable of doing. yes there is at times luck involved when it comes to being in the right spot when a puck comes your way and there is an empty side of the net begging to be filled...those times have been pretty rare for the Canes just as the victories have been...again while some of us maybe a wee bit more knowledgeable of how the game is played and those kinds of details. But NONE of us has ever coached on a pro level that i am aware of but speaking for myself, i know i haven't. So even in a fantasy league situation many of us are and will do great. So i guess it all boils down to this doesn't it? what needs to be done to salvage the rest of this season and as far as I am concerned If i was the Coach or GM...if you can't play your best for me...then you can't go home to play in the Olympics..but that is just me...and i say all of that to say this: Yes something needs to be done and done NOW..not after Christmas.but NOW.
while all of us do have a favorite player or 2 but it's about the team as a whole...as players & coaches come and go...but the team is what stays...and unless the canes as a team turn this around...I fear that one day there will be no Canes...just like those 425 jobs @ RTP disappeared today...nothing is guaranteed in our lives but for what we have Today...as none of us nor do the canes have a promised tomorrow. when i played in college sports...and we were having a crappy year, the coach used to say...play today as it was the final game of the series...who ever wins today wins the prize..sadly we don't see the canes playing like this game was the last one and it was for the Cup...as the way the Canes are playing all they get is a dixie cup for the water...would that look good in the trophy case there at the RBCC ?? i don't think so. And to add more "salt' to the wounds" did you know that even the Florida Everblades has a better record that the Canes do ? So Team...what are you going to do about it ?
Go Canes !!

third period

It seemed to me that for some reason the Canes decided that they were going to try hang on to a 2-1 win in the third period. They gave the initiative to Montreal instead of looking for a third goal. That is where they lost this game. I don't know if they were under orders to do that but that was what it looked like to me.

Pooped

The players looked tired in the third period. Through the first part of the game they were cleaning up loose pucks and winning battles along the boards. That started to break down about midway through the third period, and Montreal finally took advantage. Mo's orders were irrelevant by then. The Canes will continue to be hard-pressed to make up the minutes that Staal and Pitkanen aren't playing. Corvo and Gleason combined for 57+ minutes last night. Sutter played has played 20+ in the last three games, and I don't think he's ready for that kind of load on a nightly basis.

That the Canes have key players missing during a very busy stretch of the season is unfortunate. I'm pleased that they are on a three-games points streak and hope it is an indication that they have hit bottom and are starting to climb back up.

Struggling equals exhaustion

Off hand, I could say, why is this team always pooped because they are not winning, so they must not be putting in the effort, right?

Actually, it reminds me of swimming.  As a swimmer, I can easily kick off 100s, 400s, even 1500 yard swims without much effort.  Yet, I watch novices struggle to make 50 yards.

This is the Canes.  They are struggling so bad, and pushing so hard, they are actually digging the hole deeper.

All confidence is lost.  It's a train wreck.

xray1 -- well said

Well said and great observations.  Which Hurricane players would you place in the skating with confidence category and which players go in struggling category as you watch the team?

I think the numbers don't

I think the numbers don't lie.  Sutter just looks awesome out there.  Effortless, like the kids that sometimes swim in the next lane, and kick off 100's almost 2x faster than me.  Jussi looks pretty good too.

Fighting it are Brindy, A. Ward, Leighton and LaRose.  I dunno, LaRose -- when he is relaxed -- has a knack for fighting his way into the cracks.  I think the lack of goals/points is causing him to push and he isn't doing what LaRose's normally do.

The Shell

After the ten minute mark of the 3rd I kind of felt it was only a matter of time before the Habs were going to score, everyone could sense it. Carey Price stood on his head, amazing performance. Can't take anything away from our goaltending either last night, both were very good. Our d looked really slow last night especially late in 3rd and our forwards were mediocre at best. They've got to do a better job of sustaining a forecheck and having offensive puck possession. It seems too often they get possession, stop moving their feet, get separated from the puck, and the other team breaks out with ease. Because of this, it should not be a big surprise we can't score goals.

typical Mo Hockey

2 goals should be enough to win any game...just sit back watch the other team control the play...the puck and the game. Mo does not have such dismal win vs loss percentage for no reason and we are not talking a few hundred games here he has been at this for a long long time nearly 1000 games coached. Yet he has not learned  that you have to play the entire game with aggression and attacking style....not get up by a goal then back off...it is called Losing and Mo knows it well!

THIRD PERIOD

I totally agree.  The Hurricanes stopped attacking in the third period.

Like several of you

This game was winable...and while i too think that Capt.Rod is playing like he's either sick, injured or worn out and trying to play through it, but and while i didn't see nor did i hear Chuck kaiton say or imply that LaRose was a useful as bumps on a boar, but that he was trying to give his best efforts ...As for the shoot out, I too feel if the canes had been more agressive during the 4on 3 the SO wouldn't have been needed, but i did like what Chuck described when the habs goalie, price gave a dirty look to Rodney who almost beat him. So i too would have hoped that Mo would have had sutter give itv a shot...well tomorrow it's Toronto. lets shake this off and get prepared for them...

Go Canes !!

SHAZZ bAT!!!

SHAZZ bAT!!!

Post game

I was just able to catch the 3rd/OT/shootout. Let's start with the shootout, shall we?

Well, I'm sure everyone will be saying this, but what was Maurice thinking by putting in Rod the Anchor and Rodney? There were so many other options: Sutter, Cullen, Cole, etc. Also, that shootout was winnable. If I remember right, Ruutu had a wide open five hole. Samsonov and Cullen would have scored if they could lift the puck off the ice. Brind'Amour might have scored if he hit the inside of the net. Rodney's and Jussi's chances were the best ones, but I think Jussi should have tried to deke. Legace kept them in the shootout and gave them chance after chance that they couldn't capitalize on.

The OT power play was just a waste.

From the 3rd, I could clearly see that when Ward comes back, you won't be seeing Leighton sitting in the back-up chair. The 'Canes didn't seem to be generating scoring chances and were sitting back. They should have gotten another goal. LaRose looked like his old self again and he played very well.

Anyway, a point is good, but we really need two. And we need to stop going into overtime. There was something else I wanted to say but forgot it.

That was Legacy

"From the 3rd, I could clearly see that when Ward comes back, you won't be seeing Leighton sitting in the back-up chair."

I think Leighton has played much better than Legacy.  That was Legacy who let in that soft goal that allowed the Habs to tie it up with less than 3 minutes to play.  Leighton played very well  until he was hurt in the second period and Legacy came in to relieve him for the remainder of the game.

A few comments re: Montreal

I agree that it borders on the absurd to put Rod Brind'Amour on a shootout.  Brind'Amour hasn't scored a goal in over a month.  He is lost out on the ice.  He is not +/- -17 and is simply a broken down NHL player who should have retired last year.

I don't have a problem with Rodney being used; but I certainly would not have put Rodney ahead of Sutter.  Also,  Whitney is a winner and he has been great in the clutch.

It's more of the same where Brind'Amour and LaRose are continuing to drag the team down.  The team cannot finish and cannot come up with goals on a power play.  It is virtually impossible to win consistently if there is a third line that does almost nothing positive offensively.

Sutter continues to be the best forward on the ice.  Whitney/Sutter/Cole are playing well as a team -- although it is really time for Cole to start putting goals into the back of the net.  Jokinen/Cullen/Ruutu are also making things happen.

Although I feel that Wallin is often out of position in most games,  I thought he played well tonight.  Rodney continues to be impressive and has the courage to make moves.  He could use more strength, but he has more than proved he deserves to be on the team.

I didn't like Legace's second goal; but he made a number of excellent saves.  All in all,  another exciting game, but the team still lets a victory slip through its hands.

It didn't appear to be Paul

It didn't appear to be Paul Maurice who made the shooting schedule last night. Ron Francis was huddled over the players giving instructions for the shootout, but that really doesn't matter...except  Brind'Amour as a shooter...whomever made that decision...well, it was  whole-heartedly foolish.

I bow to superior hockey minds who regularly post here such as AD and Esteban who probably have a better take on a "fix" for this team...if there is one available this year. And I don't think there is one.

As I see it we have several players on the ice who will never help this team move the needle towards consistent winning. And there's nothing (this year) we can do about it.

No team will take our cast-offs. Anyone we have worth trading is of value to the team. Even  if we trade a good player for another good player we've really accomplished nothing. Did anyone notice the tell-all, close-up shot of Mr. Rutherford? One could see the worry, concern. frustration. His countenance looked like 40 miles of unpaved roadway.

Even if we mount a reasonable comeback I suspect that rationally the best we could hope for would be finishing somewhere around 25th position (overall) or even lower.

A major tune is called for off season. Perhaps the Public Reklations Department next press relerase should read:
For Immediate Release: Brind'Amour, A. Ward, Wallin, Gleason, Yelle, Cole, Walker, Alberts.

Sorry boys, this is not intended as a mean-spirited gig, but only a well intended observation. If you're doing your best that's all anyone can ask, but if what we see is your best, get used to the cellar.

BUT, Like all else who yell "Go Canes" I'll be there next game or at TV-side if you're on the road...hoping we can rise about this Peter Principle we seem to have just now.

Playing the Odds -- the Brind'Amour decision;

I went to www.nhl.com to see what odds the coaches were playing with Brind'Amour.  For game winning goals (gwg),  the statistics are stark.  The Bring'Amour of the past (before 2007-2008) was a money player.  Since 2007-2008,  Brind-Amour has one game winning goal (gwg).  To make the decision to use Brind'Amour even more dubious,  his last goal of any kind came on October 10th.

0 gwg

Also, it is telling that LaRose has 0 goals, and Cole (with an
injury-shortened season) has 1 goal.  I agree completely that
Brind'Amour, A.Ward, Wallin, and Yelle, are horribly underproducing.  I
can't argue that Walker's poor goal production, 2 goals,  is helping
the team.  The same is true for Samsonov, who is one of my favorite players.  Yelle is a disappointment to me as well.  I don't have
issues with Gleason and Alberts; but that is  just my take and others
are far more expert than me. It is time for a shake-up of sorts.  Far too much salary is being spent on players who can't score when for the same or less money, better players are available.  A successful NHL team can't have half its top 9 forwards unable to finish and score.  Getting close, making great moves, and failing to score is little help to a struggling team.

Wallin,  A.Ward, Yelle, and Walker I think will not be re-signed.  I hope Brind'Amour will have his contract bought out next year.  The truth is I hope, although I doubt it will happen, that Brind'Amour is put on waivers before Thanksgiving.  We assume he could not generate interest anywhere, but we won't know until we try.  At least it would send the message that management and coaches are not living in  a dreamworld and realize Brind'Amour's playing days are over.  It's a terrible thing for a team to have its captain be the worst player on the team, if not the worst player in the NHL; and with a $3,600,000.00 salary cap hit,  it's devastating.
