Rod Brind'Amour's job with the Hurricanes now has an official title: director of forwards development. General manager Jim Rutherford made the announcement today.
Brind’Amour, who officially retired from hockey on June 30, is responsible for working with all forwards in the Hurricanes' system, including drafted players in the Canadian major-junior hockey leagues, ECHL and American Hockey League (AHL).
"We wanted to wait on a title announcement until we got closer to training camp and could see what role on the ice Rod will have at camp," Rutherford said today. "We're really happy he stayed with the organization. He has really jumped into things here (Traverse City prospects tournament) and will contribute a lot to the organization.
"He will develop some players who are not on the big club, but he will also develop and work on some things he's noticed with the players with the big club. He'll be on the ice at training camp under the direction of coaching staff. During the season, he will attend most games in Raleigh when he's not traveling to Charlotte to work with players there."
Rutherford said Brind'Amour would likely watch the home games from Rutherford's box at the RBC Center.
"He'll observe and offer thoughts on players and anything that goes on in the game that he thinks should be changed or fixed," Rutherford said.
