Brind'Amour returning to Raleigh

Canes coach Paul Maurice said today that team captain Rod Brind'Amour was returning to Raleigh and would not play in the games in San Jose and Phoenix.

"Roddy has a nagging injury that's not getting any better, so we're sending him back," Maurice said. "We want him to get some treatment the next four or five days."

Maurice said the injury is not related to Brind'Amour's knee problems but was a "lower-body, muscular injury he's been dealing with for a while."

The Canes will call up forward Jakub Petruzalek from Albany (AHL) and place forward Scott Walker (upper body injury) on the injured reserve list.

Petruzalek, 23, is second among River Rats skaters this season in scoring with 34 points.

Defenseman Niclas Wallin, who has been slowed by an ankle injury, is with the team but still unable to play, Maurice said.

Questions

A few questions: * We beat Phoenix. Wonderful, but didn't Michael Leighton earn another game in the goal slot against Phoenix with his perfrormance against San Jose? Are we punishing his success? Cam was in there for 17 consecutive games. * After his contributions last year didn't Wake Brookbank deserve more ice trime instead of being relegated to gathering splinters on the bench as a healthty scratch? * With Brookbank gone, is there anyone who will defend themselves and the team members besides Gleason? Can't remember when Babchuck or Frank Kaberle dropped the gloves or laid a real body on anyone or am I wrong about that? *What are we doing to get the names of Samsonov, Ruutu, Corvo and that scrappy little fireball LaRose on long term contracts? * Love Ron Francis, but when are we going to get him off the coaching bench and place him in a talent scout/development role? Does his current position indicate Paul Maurice's position is compromised and that Paul is a short timer? Sure hope not. *Are we going further into the playoffs than many think? I believe so!

home game

I was thinking that Rod probably would have missed the entire trip if the first game was not in Vancouver. It's a "home" game for him in front of family and friends.

Dad's Influence??

While I'm not at all surprised at the fact that Rod is finally shutting it down... I find the timing interesting, to send him home 1 game into a west coast swing w/o obvious injury in the VAN game. It was reported on the FSN broadcast that Dad Bob B'A was in attendance. I wonder if there was a father - son consultation.

Groin

I think most of us knew he had some physical issue this year. When I read he was sent home with a lower body muscular injury I thought groin right away as well. I do agree that sometimes being a leader means knowing when you are hurting the club, but Roddy is a workaholic to the extreme and I am sure he felt that playing through it was the best course.
Plus none of these guys got to the NHL by giving up on anything, whatever the cost. Coaches, trainers, and management should have put him on the shelf for this a long time ago, rather than trying to ride an injured hero so long.
I can't imagine somebody in the above mentioned group didn't know there was a physical issue. But now it has been done, so get some R&R Roddy so you can come back as the player we know you are.

Leadership

Sometimes leadership means NOT trying to "do it all".

I still feel that last year the team goofed by having all these injured guys come in the last few games (not Brindy, of course, but Culler, Williams, etc.). If our leaders try to play through things they shouldn't, then the other guys will too.

Roddy needed to do this. I don't know what it means for the team tonight, but it is better than having a guy out there just struggling.

groin injuries

wether they are minor or serious aint no joke at his age, the last time i did skate and play ( oh so long ago) i too was recovering from a total knee (left) rebuild, and like Ripskinny, i favored my other side (weaker) and ended up sitting out 12 games due to a groin pull. And sitting still for this D man was tough...

anybody up for some "fishing" at the shark tank ?? hehehe...

Go Canes !!

Brind'Amour

It has been a comedy of errors to have Brind'Amour in the lineup when he was obviously unable to perform. I think it is in everybody's best interests to have him return to Raleigh and try to get healthy -- however long it takes. If he can return to form that would be great; but if he can't, the coaches need to keep him out of the lineup. No one player is more important than the team as a whole.

"Lower body muscular injury"

Sounds like a nagging groin problem. I tweaked a knee playing college hockey (Ferris State, Michigan) and my unconscious favoring of the knee led to groin strain. That is a tough injury to overcome. Best of everything to our Captain, and I'm going to be optimistic and think he'll be back up to snuff just in time for a play-off run.

Good Move

To be honest, over the past two or three games I've seen an improvement in Rod, but I don't know if that is due to him getting better or the players around him getting better. One game he played just like the old Brind'Amour and it was great to watch. I think time off for whatever reason is needed. He knows he can come back and get the respect he deserves. Swallow the pride and be glad we have some good AHL call ups that are hungry to get a chance.

I would also like to comment that this gives Staal another chance to show us how much he is worth. He did it last year for a little while and I have no doubt he can do it again.

PS- No matter what any one says the fact that Rod can win the big facesoffs is important and he needs to be around for that fact alone.

No matter how hard Rod has

No matter how hard Rod has had it this year, I think all Caniacs are cheering for and supporting him. He has looked a lot sharper lately and hopefully he'll find the back of the net soon.

Get better Roddy

People have been calling for him to take some time off all year, me being one of them. I just hope he can get better and get back to helping the team make a push to the playoffs.
