Brind'Amour not ready to retire

Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour said today that he had no plans to retire after 20 years in the NHL and would return next season.

"I made a commitment a while ago to play and I've got a contract to play it out," he said today. "So it's definitely what the plan is.

"Personally you have to believe in yourself. I would not play the game if I did not think I could still do it. And not just as a fourth-line player. My goal is to get back and contribute with this team as I feel like I can.

"That's what I have to do now. Next year I will come back and prove I can do that."

General manager Jim Rutherford said today that "nothing was cast in stone" when it came to next year's roster other than Eric Staal and Cam Ward being the "foundation of the franchise."

Rutherford said Brind'Amour needed to have a strong training camp before next season, and said that with the Canes' strength at center he will have to earn a position.

"Up until his point in his career, Rod's always been slotted into a spot," Rutherford said. "There's a little bit of a logjam there. There will be a battle in training camp and throughout the season to see who gets those extra minutes.

"But he's in the right frame of mind, he's not going to deal with an injury this summer, and he'll get equal opportunity just like everybody else."

Rutherford said there has been no discussion about Brind'Amour giving up the "C" as team captain.

"No one has brought that up and I don't think it's going to be an issue going forward," Rutherford said.

This past season was among the most trying of Brind'Amour's career. Coming off major knee surgery during the 2007-08 season, he needed another surgical procedure on the knee just before training camp. He struggled with his game before sitting out two games with a groin injury in early February, and at times was used as the Canes' fourth-line center, with reduced minutes.

"It was an extremely frustrating start of the season," he said. "Really, 50 games, or 60 games, it just didn't seem to get going tha way I wanted to."

But Brind'Amour was productive during the Canes' stretch run to the playoffs. His work ethic remains as strong as anyone's in the league. He's still a presence in the locker room and a leader.

"A real positive finish," he said. "In the last 20 games, I felt good. I think I had almost a point a game the last 20 games. So that was where I felt I fit in, and the team was winning. We got on a run and I was contributing."

Despite his injuries, Brind'Amour played 80 games this season. He closed with 16 goals and 35 assists, but with a minus-23 rating that was grating, that stung his pride.

Brind'Amour broke his nose early in the season and kept playing. He took a puck in the face in overtime of Game 7 against the Boston Bruins, got stitched up and kept playing.

"We went into the first round (against New Jersey) and did well," he said. "Then at the end, my feet went right out from under me, personally."

you offer nothing but uneducated, negative drivel to this blog. In all honesty, it is high time for you to make yourself "sparse".

I don't blame Rod at all for wanting to come back

After the difficult season he just had, I'm sure he doesn't want that to be his swan song. My hope is that we see Rod back healthy and playing the way we have grown accustom to. If he does, our team just got that much better. If it turns out that father time has caught up to him, I'm sure he has the dignity to walk away at that point.

Good point Otag1 about Rod being there to mentor Sutter. Brandon, although I don't see as a big offensive producer, could be a Brind'Amour type player defensively. Who better to learn from than Rod himself?

Good luck Rod.

Injury free Roddy

No doubt he was hampered by injuries at least coming in to the season. And since it's common for players to lose weight during the season due to the grind of a long schedule I don't doubt he never fully recovered. And when you play on a injured leg long enough you start to create bad habits. The real issue is that Brindy is such a gym rat that I don't think he ever allowed his knee to heal from when he blew it out last season. He ended up tearing some meniscus in his knee before the season started and then had a groin strain due to coming back too soon from that surgery. He is one player who actually needs to back off the training sometimes. If he gives the proper recovery to his body over the summer, then trains hard but within his body's limit he should come back fit as a fiddle. Then we can all see if he is done. His massive determination makes him hard to bet against.

ACL/MCL blow outs take time

This business of getting back from an ACL/MCL in less than 6 months is baloney. Heck, even under 1 year they are not the same. It takes time, especially for the over 35 crowd. Roddy was playing through it. He needs this summer. It will be 18+ months when we restart this fall. That is probably about as good as it will get for him, and we'll see. I'm betting he'll be back "close" to pre-injury.

The Captain will return

The Captain will return next year, the time off between now and the start of training camp will be the prescription needed for this warrior's knee to completely heal. Many players after major injuries do not perform again at their pre-injury level until the second year, regardless of age or sport. Rod will earn his ice time, expect he will perform to center the third line if not the second, as well as special teams and faceoffs. Jussi, provided we sign him, and I believe we will, can then play as a forward giving us a backup center on the roster, in this role he will provide some of the size, toughness we need at the forward position. Sutter will most likely earn, and he will have to earn the roster spot to center the fourth line. Rod contributes to the team as the captain in ways that are not always apparent to us fans. I would have Brandon Sutter's seat next to Rod's in the dressing room. That way Rod can help season the young center leading by example. Perhaps have Walker or Gleason on the other side.

Roddy

He'll be fine and we'll use him in situations where he'll add value - PK & critical faceoff situations. This year has been one of the toughest and I don't suspect we'll see the same thing from him next year. I feel confident that he'll be a positive contibutor night in and night out next year.

Next year will be better

Way too early to write off Rod...
He played all year in a nasty brace, and was visibly unstable on the ice for all but the last couple dozen games of the year. That was after the team sat him out for the two games he missed.

I expect next year to be much better than 07-08 for him, with a reasonable time off to continue his recuperation.

Roddy is our captain but:

The issue is not his age, his work ethic or his heart (We all know where he stands). The true problem is that for most of the season he played with fear of being hurt again and did not forecheck offensively, did not touch anybody defensively and as a concequence when he tried to play with that "finess" he became a defensive liability. I love our team and I have a feeling that Roddy is going to play next season as if he had something to prove, and as long as he realizes that he does not have to prove it to us (the fans) or his management team, but to HIMSELF everything is going to be oh right!!!

RPADI'S COMMENTS RE: BRIND'AMOUR

Well said.  I saw the same thing all year from Brind'Amour.  I hope it will improve next year.

my opinion

I don't think you throw him out just because of the fact he's 40. Mark Recchi's still playing great at 41 and Chris Chelios is f-ing 46. Its all about performance, and without his freak injuries Rod probably wouldn't have missed a step. Despite what happened in the playoffs, he proved down the stretch (of the regular season) that he can still play like a two-time Selke winner. Perhaps a fresh start and going to training camp is all he needs to get back there.

Off The Subject

I know this is not the subject being discussed, but can anyone tell me if a compilation of the best plays of the season has been made and where I might find/purchase it?
We had such heroic seventh games I thought someone may have put the year together and if they did, I want one.

Thanks

As an old gal, this youtube stuff is new but once I got there I had a great time.  Lots of good stuff on our guys.  Thanks so much.

The captain to rest ?

i hate disappoint everyone, but with His work ethic, after a couple of weeks with his family and etc...trust me, he'll be back in some sort of fitness center working his booty off preparing for summer camp. he has been here long enough to know how JR is and will possibly do. So if JR is saying "publicly' that the War Chief will have to earn a spot...trust me he will...contract you say ? in today's world...contracts are made and busted faster than we can take our next breath and no one even blinks or thinks about it...Go figure...

Go Canes !!

Glen Wesley knew when it was

Glen Wesley knew when it was time to go.

We'll believe it when we see it

I hope JR's tough talk is backed up. We've heard this bluster before about veterans and when push came to show, JR's testicles crawled up into his large belly. Rod has been a true warrior but there comes a time when the team has to make the decision for the athlete. Some team would pick him up if he got cut and the Canes were stuck with most of his bloated contract.

Our old team, our new tradition.

I wouldn't bet against him.

I wouldn't bet against him.

Time to Go Roddy

I think it is time for the Rod to sail away into the sunset. To hang on as a reserve fourth line player only tarnishes his rather successful career. I also think that it would be better for the teams health if he retired. Rod Brind Amour is one of only a handful of players that "had" the ability to workout extremely hard and not affect his game. Too many young players have come along and tried to work out like Rod, only to injure themselves. His training regime is not for most NHL players.....just look at man games lost to injury to fluke injuries (groins, flexors,etc...) Every year since Rod came along the canes have suffered high numbers of injuries. I still insist that the love affair with trainer Pete Friesen needs to end. I dont see teams like Detroit losing hundreds of man games lost to AVOIDABLE injuries like groin pulls. Petes training methods are not generally geared toward NHL hockey.

Players like Brind'amour,

Players like Brind'amour, Gary Roberts and a hand full of others are a huge part of the reason why our team is where it is... Why would you even consider saying a dumb comment like that, instead why don't you go to www.nhl.com and educate yourself!

All teams go through the injuries including Detroit and to say that working out is the reason why somebody will get hurt is pretty sad (Oh hold on maybe that's how Lindstrom and Pavel got hurt or Havlac... Never mind the 6'3" 230 lbs guys pounding you everytime you touch the puck!)

-Advise: Get outof the couch and play a sport!!!

Rod

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Brind'Amour return to his pre-injury form. But in all seriousness, he's almost 40 years old. I don't see him being able to get better at that age, especially after suffering major knee injuries.

I think it's time for him to hang up the skates. I am not sure he can last another whole season without his game suffering too badly. I would love to be wrong, though.

Brind'Amour

I liked what Jim Rutherford had to say about Brind'Amour when he stated that with Staal, Cullen, Jokinen, and Sutter, the center position players are excellent and that the Hurricanes would evaluate Brind'Amour as they would any other player. I feel certain Brind'Amour would not want it any other way for next year. It would be fantastic if Brind'Amour's play next year returns to his pre-injury form. It is certainly understandable that Brind'Amour's knee injuries required more than a year to recuperate.

Jussi's flexibility

Let's not forget that Jussi also went out to the wing quite often (including on Rod's line at times)

Rod

I think Rod has earned the right to continue playing and retire when he wants. Give him some rest this summer and I'll bet he will suprise a lot of people come this fall.

Amen!!!

Amen!!!
