Boychuk reassigned to Albany

Bookmark and Share

Zach Boychuk is headed back to Albany. The winger played in the last two games for the Hurricanes after an injury to Ray Whitney.

Boychuk, 20, notched his first NHL point with an assist on Tim Gleason's goal in the Canes' 3-2 loss Saturday at Columbus.

Boychuk, the team's first-round draft pick in 2008, averaged 14:35 of ice time in games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets.  He has four goals and five assists in 12 games for the River Rats (AHL) this season.

Can't wait to see him back!

Boychuk was just plain fun to watch these last couple of games and I can't wait to see him back here. I have a strong feeling the 'Canes will find their game again and soon. Perhaps knowing the level of talent waiting in Albany to take over for the veterens will help those already playing in "Bigs" to step it up so as to keep their jobs! Great Job, Zach! Here's one fan who is excited about our future, both near and long term.

This is a joke.

We have several players in Chad LaRose, Stephen Yelle, and, although I hate to add him to this sorry list, Rod Brind’amour who are utterly useless right now. The rest of the team is not much better, but these three are basically stealing from the organization by collecting a paycheck.

Boychuk has been one of our best forwards in the last two games. How can you justify sending him down, even with Whitney returning? Have we really written off the season before Thanksgiving?

Like all of you

i too was " surprised " but i do feel that he will be back, and while he is there @ Albany, trust me he'll work even harder...and it also brought to mind that the canes did renew their Affliation with Albany as a team for this season 2009/2010...it does make me wonder what PK & JR are going to do at the end of this season...As the canes do have alot of "valuable" players down there ...

Thanks for the info Chip...

Go Canes !!

I'm not surprised about

I'm not surprised about Boychuk going down. He is virtually a clone of Whitney, in terms of size and skill -- and limitations. If Whitney is ready to play, then he will play. Not only is he an alternate captain and the team's leading goal scorer, it makes sense to play Whitney if he's trade bait. Other GMs will want to see proof that he's not hurt. Caniacs will see plenty of Boychuk in future years; be patient. We didn't do Tanabe any favors by playing him so much so young.

Mixed feelings on this one

Ultimately he's better off with a full year in the AHL. Clearly, Sutter is a much-improved player because of it, even though he looked NHL-ready at times last season. Heck, even Staal's and Ward's year in the 'A' during the lockout paved the way for their emergence the following year. From a player development perspective, I'm behind this move. Barring injury, he's a dangerous top-6 or maybe even top-3 forward next season.

However, it's hard not to have noticed that in the last couple of games he's proven he belongs. He made more plays around the net than some of our veterans have made all season. His speed led directly to a great scoring chance. (Like how he blew by Kessel?) He looked a little confused deep in the offensive zone a couple times, but mostly he's said and done the right things. He's clearly not a guy that will be on the AHL-NHL bubble for long.

So, I hope the media (hint, hint) questions JR directly about his reasons for reassigning Boychuk. I hope it's either 1) because it's in the best interests of Zach Boychuk, or 2) because we have a deal for a top-6 forward in place. The only other reason I can think of is that management is more or less throwing the towel in on this season and doing what's best for next year. If that's the case, let's call it a rebuilding year and be honest about it. Because what's best for *this* team *right now* is to put the best available players in the lineup, and that includes Boychuk.

Zach Boychuk is headed back to Albany?

Then WHO is gonna score goals? The Canes need to SCORE GOALS...Seasoning players is NOT the top priority now J.R. If anything bring Bowman and Boychuk back. I think Bowman is a better scorer than anybody we have except for Staal/Whitney. Boychuk is more of a setup player ,and we have plenty of them we need a player(s) to SCORE period. Drayson Bowman has that IT quality in his shot. You put him in the high slot like Brindy plays on the P.P. and the puck is in the net NOT drawing iron ,end of story, Unless J.R. is giving up on the year bring the young guys up for 10 games what's that gonna hurt except the teams we play. If they workout fine if not back to Albany but, you can't score with smoke and mirrors folks and we can't do ANY worse...cmon J.R.

Bowman and the Power Play

From what I've seen of Bowman on AHLlive,  Bowman might be worth trying on the power play.  The power play is 0 for 20 +/-.  Bowman does have an amazing shot and is a natural scorer.  I didn't think he looked slow at all; but even if he is,  there are players with great scoring skills who are not blazing fast.  Stillman was as slow as a broken clock, but he could find ways to score (not that I am advocating bringing Stillman back even though he scores against the Hurricanes with regularity).  It's hard to get a worse result on the power play that what we have seen beginning with the Penguins series and continuing to the present.

I'll 3rd that

I too thought Boychuk played pretty good. As John Forslund likes to say, he was a growing concern on the ice. I really think Cole taking him under his wing was really good for Eric's game, that line was gaining chemistry by the shift. And while I don't want to be too optimistic, had Boychuk stayed up and put a few more games under his belt, he might have looked pretty good with Cole and Staal! Like y'all have said here, we don't know what the thinking or reason was, but dang it the team is in the cellar in a bad losing streak and this kid was showing promise. Let's not be afraid to win here, front office.

Boychuk reassigned

I realize Maurice, Francis, and Rutherford know vastly more than me; but I would have kept Boychuk on the team. I acknowledge that everything I have read about young players is that despite their desire to stay at the NHL level, a year of seasoning in the AHL is vastly better for their long-term development. From my untrained eyes, however, I thought Boychuk brought speed, puck-handling, intensity and scoring power to the Hurricanes. I wonder if the reason for the decision was as much wanting not to risk rushing Boychuk and having him completely ready next year to start in the top nine as a judgment on whether he was able to compete now in the NHL. Still, I am disappointed for him. I thought he earned the right to stay.

I'm shocked

I think he has been one of our best forwards. His line with Cole and Cullen has been amazing. I was expecting him to stay for much longer, so I was surprised when I read this. How about we sent Rod down to Albany instead.

I'm sure the coaching staff and JR have a reason for this (I hope).
