Blues 5, Hurricanes 2

It's gone from bad to worse for the Canes.

The St. Louis Blues ripped the Hurricanes 5-2 at the RBC Center as David Perron had two goals and an assist, keeping Carolina winless in the last seven games.

The Canes obviously are a team generally lacking confidence. And what little they do have is fragile.

"You get a lot more confident when you work hard," Canes coach Paul Maurice said. "It's funny. Your confidence goes when your feet aren't moving and you're not hitting anybody.

"It's the simple, grinding things that we're just not willing to do and it starts with our best guys, in back-checking and stopping and hitting and not getting beat off walls. Doing it once doesn't make you a good guy. You have to do it every shift."

What now for the Hurricanes?

"The nice thing is when you wake up in the morning, you know what the problems are," Maurice said. "The hard part is you don't know where even to start.

"We haven't respected the defensive part of the game. It looks like we flip-flop back and forth -- 'All right, we'll be good defensively and don't work hard offensively' or 'Tonight we're going to score, so we're going to leave the D and hang them out to dry.' We've got to get that thing going both ways."

Trailing 3-1 after the first period, the Canes fell behind the Blues 4-1 after two. Scott Walker's goal made it a 4-2 game midway the third and the Canes had 17 shots in the final period, but the Blues (5-4-1) and goaltender Chris Mason (34 saves) held on.

The Blues added to the lead midway in the second on Andy McDonald's goal off a two-on-one rush. McDonald scored on a pass from Keith Tkachuk at 9:42, about a minute after the Canes' Rod Brind'Amour couldn't beat goalie Chris Mason with a shot in front that would have made it a one-goal game.

The Blues rolled to a 3-0 lead in the first before Joe Corvo scored on the power play for the Canes with 53 seconds to play.

David Perron scored at 7:32 to make it 1-0, then Yan Stastny and Jay McClement scored 16 seconds apart to make it 3-0. Stastny picked off a pass in the Carolina zone and scored, then McClement got a free shot in the slot.

The Canes had the only power plays of the first period. On the first, the Canes got decent shots from Ray Whitney, Eric Staal and Rod Brind'Amour, but the Blues killed it off.

On the second, after the Blues' Mike Weaver was called for holding the stick, Corvo took a pass from Nic Wallin and unloaded from the point. ...

Go figure: The Blues, who had scored five first-period goals this season, scored three. Carolina, last in the NHL in penalties, did not have a minor penalty in the first. ...

Chad LaRose had a good scoring opportunity less than two minutes in but Chris Mason made the stop. ...

Two fights already: the Canes' Jay Harrison and Brad Winchester, then the Canes' Tim Conboy and Cam Janssen about 3 1-2 minutes later. Let's call them a draw.

Swap with Albany

Here's a novel approach! Send the entire team to Albany and bring the River Rats to Raleigh! Kids playing in the minors are dying for a shot at the bigs and it might take the pressure off the big-leaguers and give them the chance to find the fun in the game again!! And certainly the motivation to get back to the bigs where someone else carries their luggage! Hell - what's the worst that could happen? Raleigh team loses a couple more games?!!

The good news in this rotten

The good news in this rotten start is how well Scott Walker has played. He's far ahead of his teammates in plus/minus, and he has only 9 penalty minutes -- I assume that's one fighting major and just two minors. There were moments last night when Cullen, Brindamour, and the often-maligned Wallin played well. I hadn't seen Wallin on the PP in a long time.

Walker

Agreed, he's played great so far, really gutting it out. He's probably been our best/most consistent player this season which is troubling. I thought Wallin looked really bad in the first period, he looked a step behind every shift. We need to get him on the ice in better situations (like not against their 1st & 2nd line, he's clearly too slow), especially at home

benching

I agree with Schelle92. Staal is overpaid and not producing. He needs to sit in the press box for a while.

...OR...

A conditioning stint in Albany.

It's not just Staal...it's 95% of the team.

this isn't baseball...

you can't just send a guy on a one-way contract to the minors and bring him back whenever you want.  Staal would have to clear re-entry waivers, which would never happen.  Teams would be lining up to claim him for half his salary.

Uhhhhh...

Yes, you can - if there was an injury.  Thought he was playing through one...no matter.  It was a joke.

not the same team???

this team is missing some of the people that were on the team last year , of course over the summer they were demonized and JR didnt think they were necessary and went and signed different players.....by the way JR how is that working out?. we are bigger, stronger ,slower and older ....and dont look anything like a eastern confrece finals team , if this keeps up we will proably stay away from the rbc and you can self impose an even smaller payroll cap neat year...

Waiting for the Return of Ruutu, Cole, Gleason

I happen to agree with Maurice that the symptoms of the problem are obvious: (quoting Maurice)
"It's the simple, grinding things that we're just not willing to do and it starts with our best guys, in back-checking and stopping and hitting and not getting beat off walls. Doing it once doesn't make you a good guy. You have to do it every shift."

To me the obvious gap for the Hurricanes was that the team depended far too much on only two players, Ruutu and Cole, to provide consistent hitting. Accordingly, when Ruutu and Cole are out of the lineup, the Hurricanes struggle to beat any team, The other obvious glaring issue was the vulnerability of the Hurricanes to be dominated by the physically strong teams. To me there was simply no way LaRose and Whitney at forwards on the first line would work against teams built around physical forwards. It is not a new concept; and many people have called for the Hurricanes to add a large scoring forward to go with Staal. In the Blues game, the first goal was the result of the Blues outworking Staal/Whitney/LaRose. The second goal was the result of LaRose misjudging a chip and missing the puck with his glove. The third goal was also a breakdown. In short, the Hurricanes are killing themselves and the Blues obviously sought to pressure the Hurricanes into deadly mistakes in the Hurricanes offensive end. I don't blame Maurice or Francis for the slow start. No NHL coach on the planet can put together a winning strategy if the players throw pucks away in their own end of the ice.

i would agree

but what happened to the guys who either fill in for them or are paired with them at ? i hate to say thiss, but what would the Canes & bench be doing if those 3 were no longer on the roster ? isn't there more substance to the Canes than Ruutu,Cole & Gleason ? persoanlly if i was behind the bench...some people would be sitting for a while...and those hungry players who are trying and do make a concerted effort would get valuable icetime.i was in the other room with the knucklefests for both harrison 7 conboy happened...what started those ? it seemed both of those didn't do anything to ignight the Canes...from all the boo birds i heard...but seeing i am OT an expert ...all i can do is hope huh ?? Be safe out there...

Go Canes !!

Ruutu, Cole, Gleason

I agree with the idea that ice time is earned.  I thought it was a bad matchup for the Hurricanes to have Whitney/Staal/LaRose on the same line against the Blues because there was not enough physicality on that line and I believed the Blues would manhandle that line. Staal has tremendous talent, but he is not physical the way Ovechkin is physical.  It is unrealistic to play LaRose as a power forward.  On the other hand,  I thought Samsonov/Sutter/Jokinen were battling.  It doesn't make sense to me that Maurice can't get maximum effort out of each line, each shift and particularly when the team is desperate for a win.

Stats

Well, you look at the stats and you say you outshot your opponent 36-18, your powerplay went 2-5 and your penalty kill didn't conceded a goal; most nights you win with those stats. This is tough, Larose is right - they have pull out of this as a group, one shift at a time. As a fan it's pretty easy to point fingers right now, there's a lot guys not contributing, but it's the whole lot. If they're going to get out of this funk, it has to start at the top with Eric Staal. He's got to find a way to take this team on his back and score some goals. It starts with him and trickles down.

Trick or Treat

I will be sure to trick or treat at all of the Canes' houses this year. They were giving away some sweet stuff last night. From the giveaways to a pile missed PP opportunities, on multiple gifts from the refs, there is no way even an average team would have lost this game.

Horrible turnovers in their own end (not all of which were scored on... it could have easily been 8-1), Staal giving up the puck, then just plain giving up which earned him one of the hockey puck t-shirt packs tossed from the stands (which could have cost the Canes Walkers PP goal if the refs had seen it and stopped play). Please stop complaining about B'A's $$, he actually put a few good shifts together... it's Staal that owes JR the refund at this point, his effort was not even worthy of the term 'lacking'. A well earned -4 for the night. Ughhhhh.

This is deja vu all over again, feels just like the end of October last year. The PP going nowhere fast, not getting back and playing together on D... blah blah blah. This was one of the worst performances I've seen from this team. Period.

CONCERN

What started out as an early season lull is fast becoming a serious slump. The Canes look slow, sloppy and unsure of themselves. The forecheck is nonexistent. The "D" is nowhere to be found. Cam is repeatedly hung out to dry After a career year, LaRose is back where he belongs — on the fourth line. Cole is back on the shelf. Mo looks completely clueless. Aside from impressive victories over powerhouses Tampa Bay and Florida, the Canes have amassed a grand total of 3 points in the other 9 games. Up next? The Flyers and Sharks — hardly what you'd call turnaround opportunities.

Time for benching

Nothing seems to be working, perhaps benching or reducing ice time would wake them up, starting with Staal.

TIME FOR BENCHING

I totally agree with canseh.  If the ice time were reward-based, players like Tom Kostopolous and Scott Walker would play 30 minutes a night.  Eric Staal would be watching from the press box (he might as well be there as much as he's doing on the ice).  If he were to be healthy scratched one game, I'm guessing his half (donkey)ing would evaporate pretty quickly.

slow,slow,slow

The glaring problem is that the Canes are skating too slow as a team. The difference between the opposition and the Canes in most of the games is really obvious. Why, I have no idea. The result is an inability to get the puck out of the defensive zone quickly or put pressure on the opposition.
Oh and where is the much-vaunted defense? They look like they have no idea how to play together.
I agree that those fights were unnecessary.

Disappointed STH

It was a painful game to watch--we were slow and sloppy--and you could feel the team's confidence slip away with each missed opportunity. I also thought that the early fights were a big mistake. We were outskating the Blues in the first 6 minutes, and seemed to get totally sidetracked by the fisticuffs. Rather than energizing the team, it seemed a distraction. Let's get back to playing Canes hockey while there is still a lot of season left to play!

I would agree

after the first 6-8 minutes it seemed to be all down hill dispite a few flashes of good skating and working the Blues end and getting the puck to and in the net.

heck the canes were to make St.Louis sing the Blues...not the Canes fans !! Off to philly...Gee Toto...the run for the cup, part 2 aint !!

Bah !! Humbug !!

Ugh. Games like tonight are

Ugh. Games like tonight are attendance-killers.

same old thing

It's fast becoming a broken record. Not clearing the puck. Goal. Chad trips up. Goal. Sloppy pass. 3 on 1. Goal. At least they stayed clear of the penalty box. This team right now isn't getting any of the breaks because they're not forcing the other teams to make a bad play so we can capitalize in the mistake. Seems like a puck hits one of our players skates and it goes directly to an opposing players stick. When that happens to the other team, the puck seems to go right over our sticks to their stick. The bottom line is this team isn't doing enough of the little things to win games rather than lose. Calling up people from Albany (which many clamor for) is a short term fix. The team can't afford to do that because the sooner they get here, the sooner they accumulate time towards free agency. If they bring up Boychuck and Bowman and already having brought up Sutter, you risk the possibility of having all 3 become free agents at the same time. This team can't afford to get themselves into the same mess that Chicago will be in at the end of this season. Part of that is due to stupid contracts (Campbell and Hossa), part to bringing all the young talent up at the same time.

Mo Must Go?

I'm sorry...but what is the excuse THIS time???

A "full" season of Mo's systems is NOT working. Go back to the 1/2 system OR Mo must go.

It's not what you have done for ME, but what have you done for ME lately.

JUST like my job, pal.

Hitting Bottom

We may be seeing bottom here. Not sure. But Canes fans recognize this syndrome. It's the same one that has the team showing up on some occasions, and others not. The one that had them, time after time last season, coming back in the third.

My theory (which is just that--a theory) is that Brind'amour's injury, demotion, poor performance, etc. compared to his huge salary has weakened his confidence as a captain, (and everyone sort of senses it). So, he probably doesn't feel like he can step up and open his mouth too much, as captain, considering he's performing like a fourth liner and getting paid like it's 2006. It feels like every man for himself out there. No real leader for one reason or another. Or maybe it's just a weird transition time for this club.

How sad

like the first 2 people who posted thus far...i too am sadden that for what ever the reason the canes are starting off slow...had what 6 chances on the PP to score and did not take advantage of all of them, too much passing when shots at & on the goal wer need...Some of the canes did the best they could on and by themselves but as a team...one would think the canes were the now Charlestown Chiefs...who couldn't win worth beans...but this is the NHL...not the federal league is it ? No wonder the fans could be heard booing the canes as often as they did...And Chuck Kaiton diodn't sound too happy either...a loss of 4-2 was bad enough but for what the 2nd or 3rd time the canes gave away an empty netter for an extra body that didn't do the job...Sorry Folks...Mo or Somebody ought to fined or taken out back to the ol wood shed for making that mistake 1 time too many...

and here they go to philly next...sigh...maybe After theOlympics they'll wake up...but by then it might be too late...Check the points/standings and you'll see what i'm talking about...I am not jumping ship either...but i'd like the dumb thing go out to sea first...but then again...people in hell want ice water too !!

Go Canes !! P L E A S E !!!

Hard to Imagine

It's hard to imagine that this team out on the ice is essentially the same team that went to the Eastern Conference finals. It's truly ugly hockey thus far this season. What a shame.

More of the Same

I've come to the conclusion that this team needs to be in dire straights before it will play good hockey. That is precisely what happened last year, and they are on the verge of being in the same dire situation this season. By no means am I jumping off the bandwagon, but you really wish that these guys could motivate themselves to consistently play well regardless of their position in the standings.

Believe they are making this game too complicated....
