Big goals, huge win for the Hurricanes

Bookmark and Share

Talk about sudden victory.

The Canes have beaten the New Jersey Devils in dramatic fashion before in the playoffs. Remember Eric Staal's tying score with three seconds left in Game 2 of their 2006 series, in a game the Hurricanes would win?

But this was Game 7. This was with their season on the line. This was Staal scoring a game-winning goal never to be forgotten, with 31.7 seconds left, giving the Hurricanes a 4-3 victory.

"That's why he gets paid the big bucks," Canes winger Chad LaRose said with a big smile.

But don't forget LaRose. He had the primary assist on the winning goal, absorbing a hit from Devils defenseman Colin White to get the puck to Staal, open on the right wing.

"I saw White coming and I just threw it through his legs to Staller," LaRose said. "He had good speed coming up and found the back of the net.

"It's over and done with. Pretty amazing."

First, Jussi Jokinen tied the score 3-3 with 1:20 left, taking a Joni Pitkanen pass and whipping a shot past goaltender Martin Brodeur. Call it Finn-to-Finn combination.

Defenseman Tim Gleason also was a big part of the scoring play, going low to the ice, reaching out and poking the puck to Pitkanen on the left point.

Jokinen scored the game-winner in Game 4 with two-tenths of a second left and had another goal in the Canes' 4-0 win in Game 6. Now this.

"Gleas made a great play to get the puck to Joni," Jokinen said of Gleason. "Joni had his head up and he knows I'm right there.

"We've been doing that play since we were 14 years old. Great pass by Joni."

And, Jokinen said, a great feeling to win the series. The Canes move on, facing top-seeded Boston in an Eastern Conference semifinal series that begins Friday at the TD Banknorth Garden.

"I don't think we're satisfied with this," Jokinen said. "We'll be ready for Boston."

Shock at the Rock

sounds good to me. Other than that all I can say is that I was utterly and genuinely speechless.

Shock at the Rock

Shock at the Rock sounds like a winner.

Gleason and Pitkanen

Two great plays from Gleason and Pitkanen or else this would never have happened. The save by Gleason at the point and then the pass to Pitkanen and his gorgeous feed to Jokinen. Pitkanen has taken a lot of stick (sometimes deserved) from the fans this season, but he deserves a lot of credit as well. Jim has made no secret of his pursuit of Pitkanen and now we know why. Giving up Cole was not a popular move, but sometimes you need to make a bold move. One down, three more to go!

I too like that !!

Shock At The Rock gets my vote !!!

No more "Miracle" names

Not sure what to call this one but we have the "Miracle at Molson" and I like "Miracle Finnish" for game four of this series, but we shouldn't have two miracles in one series. "SHOCK AT THE ROCK" isn't bad.  Just my $.02.
Go Canes!

SHOCK AT THE ROCK

SHOCK AT THE ROCK

I like it!

For what it's worth, I like "SHOCK AT THE ROCK"!

hey Chip

How about " Ripped at the Rock " ?? Or Nuked at Newark, Tsunami @ the Rock, Tide Turned @ the Rock, The Crushing of the Rock ??
gee this is harder than i thought...time to go and turn on the ole tea kettle...makes me glad i don't write for a living, heck, i'd be out of work real quick huh ?? But i will say this in closing...the canes won't last long if they play Boston like the canes did during period 2 this game 7...Boston will eat the canes up, if the Canes falter like that...not being ugly or mean..just being realistic. As i want to see the canes do all they can do to hoist the cup up ...and not sit back with the stunned looks some of the Devils fans had after the final buzzer sounded ...
Go Canes !!

Miracle at the Rock?

How about these?

Game 4: "Miracle Finnish" (note the spelling)

Game 7: "Miracle at the Rock"

Yep Needs a Name

Yes, Carolina is still strong. You can't beat their goal tending and Jokinen just add to the team!!
