So what's the Canes' next move? Cam Ward will be out at least three to four weeks, general manager Jim Rutherford says, so a goaltending decision must be made.
The best guess here is that the Hurricanes will sign a goaltender and that it will be Manny Legace. He's 36, he's experienced, he's won 177 NHL games.
Legace had a preseason tryout with the Atlanta Thrashers and has been playing for the Chicago Wolves (AHL). He would be able to hop in and team with Michael Leighton.
Rutherford has not said what direction the Canes will take, but it seems like signing Legace would be the best option if the Canes can make it work financially.

It would have been nice if
Mon, 11/09/2009 - 09:59 — Hockeydad92It would have been nice if Mo could have found some game time for Leighton early on, he is a capable netminder when playing behind a NHL defense. When he saw the Flyers we were a bunch of lost puppies going thru the motions. Why not bring Peters or the other kid up from Albany to back up and while your at it get the multi discount bus fare and send a hand full of those guys that want some NHL time. Give Brandon and Zach 20 minutes a night and lets see what they can do? This is a prefect opportunity for Drayson Bowman, Samson, Terry, or Dwyer or all of them to get some valuable NHL time. Is Yelle or Kostopoulos that much of a upgrade?? So i guess JR signs Legace and he is our savior, who knows......
Right on!
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 21:28 — AN0NYM0USI fully agree with you, on all counts. Someone like Legace wants something that we have--an opportunity to play at the NHL level; Legace has something that we need--a NHL-calibre goalie with experience. A one year (5-month) contract would work for both sides. I would think $700K would do it.
He's currently playing with
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 21:40 — caneshockey77He's currently playing with the Wolves, so I don't think we'll have to go over league minimum to get him here, I'm sure he'll take any chance to get back to the NHL.
You are right!
Mon, 11/09/2009 - 10:22 — AN0NYM0USWe're trying to make lemonade out of lemons. Stay thirsty, my friends.

I think you guys have
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 20:40 — caneshockey77I think you guys have misread what the team said.
He will be out a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks. When there is a laceration to the muscle, the muscle first has to heal (which could be what the 3-4 weeks refers to) and then physical therapy will be needed to stretch the muscle out and get all of the flexibility back. You also must take in to consideration that the organization will not want to rush back their franchise goalie during a failed season. They also wouldn't want to throw Peters into a losing situation where he will be sitting on the bench. Albany has a very good team and I'm sure they would rather keep him as the starter there. This information reinforces that they will be looking at bringing in another goaltender. Rutherford will be in negotiations, which is very much a poker game, and he doesn't want to give up all of the info and say that Ward will be out for 3 months and seem incredibly desperate. Instead they throw out the 3-4 weeks instead as that sounds much less serious than what it most likely will be. This way they can have some leverage in negotiations, sign someone like Legace or Fernandez for league minimum and hope to get rid of them when Ward can come back or at the deadline.
What are farm teams for?
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 19:27 — trooper95Uhhhhh, call up Jutin Peters and give him the NHL experience. SaintMateo is dead on, there is no need to sign another goalie, Cam is expected to be back in 3-4 weeks. Mr. Rutherford is saling this ship called the Canes, I just hope we do not go over a waterfall.
Go Canes :~) !!
If Cam is only going to be
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 18:19 — SaintMateoIf Cam is only going to be out for 3 to 4 weeks.... I do not see where it makes sense to sign a goaltender.... I could see if Cam Ward was expected to be out for the season..... but 3 to 4 weeks is AHL call up material.... no need to wasted a contract or cap space on signing someone and then end up w/ 3 NHL goaltenders until the deadline.....
It doesn't make sense.... unless Cam is going to be out until April or something like that....
