Ryan Bayda faces a potential suspension after he was assessed a match penalty for an incident late in Thursday’s 7-4 loss to the Penguins.
Bayda exchanged high-sticks with Kris Letang during a scrum with 1:19 to play, sparking a pair of fights — one between Tim Gleason and Letang, the other between Patrick Eaves and Miroslav Satan.
Letang was assessed a game misconduct and Bayda a match penalty, which denotes an attempt to injure and carries with it an automatic review suspension pending a review by the league office. Bayda was unavailable for comment after the game.
“I didn’t get an explanation as to what happened,” Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice said. “Two players came together and it was a high-sticking match, but I didn’t get any more than that.”
An NHL spokesman said the match penalty was assessed for a cross-check with intent to injure.

nasty stick
Fri, 09/11/2009 - 23:51 — leonard123There is no room for dirty nasty use of sticks. This kind of behavior should be dealt with quickly. When the players know you mean business with suspensions, they will get the message. I love a good fight, and a fair fight should still be allowed but sticking seems to me to be akin to dishonourable play. Keep it real folks, if you must get the battle itch, why not try a combat sport like airsoft or paintball, but play with honor and good sportsmanship.

Automatic suspension...or not
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 19:59 — dan_canesIt used to be that a match penalty for intent to injure automatically meant a one game suspension minimum. Amazing how twice now that rule has been ignored. Colin Campbell must be on our payroll.
Seriously?
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 16:28 — cmm11Out of hand early? It appears WAStout has his black and red glases on. Cullen hit Crosby late and away from the play about 5-6 times throughout the game with no calls. One time, the puck was in the corner and Cullen dumped Crosby into Fleury...no call. The entire playoffs, especially DETROIT / ANAHEIM have been horrendous. Carolina was the perfect fit to upend Boston, but lack of team speed and depth will be their downfall.
Hilarious
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 16:27 — mpsullivan65I think its funny how the Bayda high-stick is characterized as an "exchange". When did Bayda get sticked back? It was obviously a cheap and desperate (and useless) attempt to shift momentum, but in light of the six or seven times Canes' players tripped Pens with sticks or feet, several times dangerously so, it was not surprising. Tripping, sucker-sticking (or punching for that matter), and other such cowardly acts aren't old-time hockey, its pure frustration from getting your butt kicked. Bring out the brooms.
Letting Them Play vs Officiating
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 14:50 — Benedict_CowherI admit - as a true hockey fan, I want to say "let them play" as much as anyone else - but after seeing what the league became after letting them play became the rule (pre lock-out) I realized that this is not the type of hockey I want to watch.
What I want to see is the fast, physical, back and forth game that hockey can be (specifically if teams like the Pens and Canes are going head to head)
What I do not want to see is the rugby match that hockey was, with every skill player being hooked and slashed and interfered with on every play.
Players are going to take as much as you give them. If the refs establish a pattern of officiating and stick to it, we'll end up with some entertaining games.
"with every skill player
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 15:23 — CharlotteCaniac"with every skill player being hooked and slashed and interfered with "
There is where your problem lies. How do you define a "skill" player? You either call it or you don't. You don't have a set of rules for one player and another set for other players. This is why you as Pens fans have to listen to the fans of other teams when Crosby draws penalties that would not be called if another player was involved. You aren't going to see it our way and we aren't going to see it yours.
The NHL has turned to garbage ever since they started changing the rules to improve marketing. First it was the crease rules, then the obstruction penalties, etc. Hockey is hockey. They try to manipulate the game for the sake of money. In the process they have created a different standard for each player/situation. Until they improve consistency and stop labeling players a certain way, most teams without a headlining superstar are going to yell foul.
What do you want to see figure skating or hockey
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 14:34 — CanesRtheBestIt's the playoffs, let em play. Let them be physical. If you take the fiesty out of hockey, myself and the majority of hockey fans are going to give up their seasons tickets. The Bayda shoulder to head hit was not very hard, didn't even phase Letang. The CrossCheck to the chin resulted when Letang skated towards Bayda, looked like Bayda threw up the bar to keep him at a distance. Again didn't seem to phase Letang even a little. Anyway if the NHL were to decide to suspend Bayda, it might actually hurt the Pens more than the Canes. Bayda was only allowed to play 4:37, granted he got an assist on Eaves goal who was on the ice only 3:25. If Canes dressed a 7th dman, Babchuk, who scored more goals than Eaves and Bayda put together regular season, then maybe our Dmen wouldn't be suckin' wind at the end of 3rd period. 4 Dmen playing close to 30mins each with 1 playing less than 8mins is ridiculous. Kaberle played 7:23, I hope the Canes coaches realize the 4 goto Dmen had to play an avg of 10 more shifts than each of the Pens Dmen. Babchuk could have given them 20mins and gave Wallin a chance to play more than 11.
Hockey
Sat, 05/23/2009 - 00:32 — LetsGoPittI'd rather see skating and passing and shooting than fights. Yeah, a good hip check and stand up defense and a hard shot into the boards is fine, and there will always be hits. But play on an Olympic size rink with more ice behind the net for skating and less cluthcing and grabbing.
Classy Fans
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 13:28 — pens52I also want to agree with PittFan's posting about the Cane fans. You folks may be the classiest in the NHL. Totally opposite of the Philly "fans". Naturally I hope that the Pens continue on but if the Canes do manage a comeback, it would be fine with me to have the Canes represent the East. I would especially be happy for Ron Francis who is one of the most likeable people around.
Canes fans/Chinedict Arnold Cowher
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 13:27 — LetsGoPens71Agreed. Canes fans have class. Apologies in advance for the stupid stuff some of these "yinzers" from Pittsburgh say. It's so nice to be able to read these forums [try the philly.com garbage] without having to read nothing but senseless trash talk from LOSERS. There is no way that Sabres fans can be any worse than those a**hole fans from Philthadelphia . And as far as Cowher goes, nothing would make me feel better than to see the Pens shove that siren up his a**. I never did like the guy much, I think he is a great motivator whose Steeler teams won games in spite of him and lost games because of him. After the way he hung Roethlisberger out to dry that season after his motorcycle accident and appendix I lost ALL respect for him. He is all about him and nobody else. He can kiss my Black and Gold behind. Peace. Good Luck Canes, LET'S GO PENS!

Fri, 05/22/2009 - 12:56 — Benedict_CowherI just wanted to agree with PittFan - You Canes fans are great. By stating the truth (even when it hurts sometimes) you show a lot of class and bring out the best in this sport and other fans.

Fri, 05/22/2009 - 12:12 — pittfanas a pittsburgh fan, i gotta compliment you carolina fans. truly, in all sincerity. i mean it. i am honestly not being sarcastic. you guys have a hell of a team. even though the 'canes are being spanked by the penguins, your complailnts show thought and knowledge of the game. i cannot help comparing to what isaw in the philly papers during that series. THOSE people are animals. all they could do, especially when the penguins were DEFEATING THEM, was talk trash. i have nothing but good things to say about your team. especially ron francis, who al pittsburghers still admire from his helping us win two cups in the '90s.
as for the penalty calls. get over it. there have been calls against EITHER team that could have been called. this has been going on all playoffs in all of the series. all teams deal with this. but the garbage at the end of the game was over the line. way past the line. to compare it to any earlier hits is just not appropriate.

I'm sorry, but there is never a good time for cheap shots. You think just because the Pens knee-to-knee hits on our players happened in the middle of the game that they don't compare to the ending last night? Give me a break. At least your players saw it coming. I don't give a damn if it happens at the opening face off, in the middle of the second period, or an hour and a half after the game is over out in the parking lot. Don't try to rationalize your teams dirty actions in game one. No one here is going to buy it.

End of game penalties
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 12:04 — dan_canesBenedict Cowher...
The carryover idea isn't a bad idea. It would settle things down.
Another idea -- which would add fairness as well -- is that the game doesn't end as long as there is a power play for the team that is behind. One issue I frequently see is players taking liberties on defense when they are up by a goal with 15 seconds to play because they know even if they take a penalty, there is going to be a face-off and there won't be enough time for the other team to do anything about it. You can take that away by the game continuing until the penalty ends. It would be like an NFL game not being able to end on a defensive penalty if the team with the ball is losing.
@WAStout You are an obvious HOMER. There were missed calls both ways. And Crosby was only on top of Cullen because Cullen took him down. Cullen got away with the first one and got caught on the second. He should have quit while he was ahead.
@estaban (has to be the worst guitarist in history BTW)...
You hope Bayda isn't suspended? Why? Because you are a homer? He created the entire mess. Unprovoked elbow. Cross check to the face after the play had stopped. Ruled by the refs as an intent to injure. What's not to suspend for? We (the Canes) got a free pass on the Walker cheap shot. Time to take our medicine on this one.
Dear Dan_
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 12:20 — esteban1949As i stated before I didn't see the "offence"...as i had turned the game off at about 4 mins. or 3:50 something left to play. That is why i said what I did due to the fact that and while Bayda is a human being prone to make mistakes. But it is out of professional character for him to go and just for the hell or fun of it go head hunting with a stick in his hands with the intent to go ut and physically hurt some one...So and please do remember the manners your grannie taught you...unless her name was Ma Barker. As history showed how loving & kind her kids & etc were... have a safe & happy week end...and please don't go and play electricity in the bath tub. That saftey reminder was brought to you by the While E Coyote school of saftey engineering of Walla Walla washingto...Homer Simpson president & ceo
Go Canes !!
You're Right
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 12:13 — WAStoutI forgot Crosby does no wrong.
RE: Rules...do they enforce clutch and grab on dump-in's or what??
disgraces
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 11:43 — Benedict_CowherThe officiating in the play offs has been disgraceful in general. All too often, refs put the whistles away for fear of changing the outcome of a game, but by not calling penalties, they are doing just that.
I think the NHL needs to look back to pre-lock out hockey and remember how bad the game had gotten (and how many fans had left) before they rewrote the rulebook to actually enforce rules.
I do not understand why the NHL does not allow penalty minutes to carry over to the next game in playoff series. The current rules for final minute shenanigans are all well and good and should remain in place - but in a playoff series, knowing you'll start the next game with the opposing team on a power play may just settle you down a bit.
Also - I'm a pens fan - I do not think OV's knee was intentional (and god knows I wanted to say I did) I also do not think that Cooke's knee was intentional (word here is that it was not even a knee as much as it was a shin on shin) but whichever cane took a run at Craig Adams last night....boy that sure looked intentional.
And Bayda's cross check to the face does deserve at least a game....thing is, so did Kuntiz on the Caps goalie in game 2 of last series.
its the coach
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 11:36 — CaneiacYou can't really blame Bayda, he was just doing his job. Maurice sicked the dogs at the end to "send a message". Players don't really have that discretion to go out there and start fights like that. Why do you think the NHL fines the coack $10k for the instigator ruele? I'm really not all that impressed with Maurice. Sure the Canes have done well, but they did well before he showed up. In fact, they won the cup after he got canned the 1st time. It seems pretty bush league for a team in the Stanley cup semi finals to go out and start a punch up after they get blown out. Hopefully the Canes come back and win a few, but at this point they're getting out played and out classed by the Pens.
I hope the NHL does the right thing (for once)
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 11:06 — JadosaThe league has dropped the ball big time these playoffs, they have let too many cheap, dirty plays go. I wanted Cooke suspended after game 1. I wanted Ov punished last series but the NHL just let it go. They are setting a bad precident and they are asking for a serious injury unless they send a message that this type play will not be tolerated.
I agree, I think Bayda
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 10:58 — CaniacCathyeI agree, I think Bayda deserves a suspension for his actions. I want the Canes to win, but not at the point to where cheap shots are being taken especially at the end of a game they are already losing.
Wrong Guy??
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 10:18 — sasidechickAs I watched those two fights at the end of the third, the guy who was fighting Satan (Eaves) got knocked to the ground with Satan on top of him. Eaves then used a KICKING motion with his skate toward Satan and the linesman's head jerked back like WTF as he looked down at him. I am guessing they gave the match penalty to the wrong guy.
Don't be surprised if isn't EAVES who is suspended. Trying to kick someone with your skate is an attempt to injure.
I didn't see the "trading of
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 10:22 — gocanes2I didn't see the "trading of high sticks". I saw the Bayda's elbow to the head which seemed to spark it all. Unfortunately, the vs. announcers didn't really explain what had really happened and what the actual penalties were. Can someone explain?
trading high sticks?
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 09:08 — pensfaninkcI realize as a Pens fan that I may see things one-sided at times, but there was not any trading of high sticks. Bayda threw an elbow into Letang at the end of an icing touch-up and then followed it with a cross-check to the chin of Letang. Very unfortunate, and because it happened at the end of the game, I think he does need to be suspended for a game -- it's not like he really served any time for his indiscretion during the game in which the infraction happened.
I grew up in Minnesota and am a huge hockey fan and the purists will disagree, but this crap at the end of games has got to end -- the idea that you are sending a message is baloney.
Impact of penalties
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 12:05 — neijnaAs a Hurricanes fan, my biggest objection relates to who gets the penalties and the resulting impact. The referees have been inconsistent and the result has been to the detriment of the game. Carolina has a great team and fans that support them. They deserve to have the opportunity to settle this on the ice.
In game 1 -- whether the officials saw it or not -- a player kicked another player's leg out from underneath him. The act, which I have reviewed ad nauseum, appeared intentional and deliberate. Ruutu is an agressive and attacking forward who has been productive not only offensively, but also on the forecheck overall. His involvement improves the power play and creates havoc for a goalie.
Cole, while able to play in game 2, was not able to practice. His potential unavailability most assuredly affected the team and its approach to the game. For my part, a suspension should have been levied equivalent to the games missed on Ruutu. And, I find it curious that Matt Cooke, who lobbied so hard for Ovie's suspension for the knee-on-knee to Gonchar, did the same to Cole.
In the end, I would prefer this series be settled on the ice by the full compliment of players available to each team. The refererees should either put their whistles away or take them out. But this mixed bag is nonsense. And overall, the Canes have gotten the short end of the stick. Case in point, the goalie interference call on Cole's jockeying for position with Gil. The Canes are down anywhere from two to three players. The suggestion of a suspension for the act in question is offensive when I look at the overall lanscape and what has played out.
I am curious to see how the officials handle the games in Raleigh. And while I credit the good play of Fleury, Crosby and Malkin, now its our turn. Prepare for the Storm. GO CANES! CANES in 6.
Canes in 6?!?!?
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 12:24 — mikeinpghDo you mean 6 weeks? They'd need that long to beat the Pens 4 times. You must be doing some nice drugs there pal!
trading high sticks
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 10:04 — abramsdougI agree with the Pens fan. I think the end of game fighting is totally unacceptable. The time to play hard is during the game and between the whistles. I think Bayda acted completely inappropriately. If you want to send a message use Western Union. If you want to prove you are a hockey player, prove it on the ice when the puck is in play. He is a better hockey player than that.
Embarassing
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 10:58 — wxray1I found the whole situation embarassing for Bayda, the Canes and hockey in general.
I'm not a "fighting needs to be out of the game guy", but THIS kind of stuff needs to be out. Makes me not want to watch the game.
Go Canes, please make us proud, no matter how this series goes...
I have to agree with you.
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 09:23 — gocanes2I have to agree with you. That was a BAD move on Ryan Bayda's part. Seems uncharacteristic of him. I'm sure he'll be suspended and deserves to be.
1 Game at least
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 08:43 — MrKnockoffI'm guessing two, but at least one game has to be coming. Pretty dirty play, imo. I didn't think Walker should have been suspended, but this one was nasty. I'll be really surprised if there isn't a fine and suspension.
I did Not
Fri, 05/22/2009 - 06:11 — esteban1949see the " alleged" incident as i turned off the game when it was 6-4 with 4 something i think it was to go, as i knew then, it was over for the day. But and again the officiating as a whole has been poor...but last nights game for the most part was good...but again...i didn't see the scrum or the fight.
I hope that after " further review" the NHL will NOT suspend Bayda. But if they do, They do. there is nothing we, the average fan can say of do about it.
Go Canes !!
