The Carolina Hurricanes lost an early lead.
They lost forward Tuomo Ruutu, who had a goal and assist, to a game misconduct.
Finally, the Hurricanes lost another road game, dropping a 5-4 decision Friday to the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center.
Paul Stastny had two goals and an assist for the Avs, the surprise Western Conference leaders and one of the NHL's best feel-good stories of the early season. His 5-on-3 power-play score with 13:39 to play pushed Colorado ahead 5-3.
But the Hurricanes, who led 2-0 early in the first period, didn't crumble. Ray Whitney, denied on a penalty shot early in the third, scored with 11:20 remaining to make it a one-goal game.
The Avs scored two goals in 32 seconds in the first period to tie the score. They then added another two in a 40-second span of the second period to move two goals ahead before Matt Cullen scored for the Canes late in the period.
Ruutu picked up a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct at 5:26 of the second after a hit from behind on Darcy Tucker, who was knocked unconscious and had to be removed from the ice on a stretcher (Tucker regained consciousness and was taken to a hospital). The Avs' Adam Foote was penalized for roughing after the Ruutu hit, but the Avs scored with 26 seconds left on the three-minute power play.
After Milan Hejduk scored on a slapshot from the left circle to make it 3-2, Wojtek Wolski duplicated the shot 40 seconds later for a 4-2 lead.
Cullen scored on a wraparound with 3:45 left in the second to make it 4-3.
The Canes took a 2-0 lead on the Avs in the first period on goals by Joe Corvo and Tuomo Ruutu, only to have Colorado tie the score on rapid-fire goals by Ryan O'Reilly and Paul Stastny.
Corvo had a power-play score and Ruutu a goal and assist as the Canes jumped to a 2-0 lead early in the first.
Corvo got his first goal of the season at 3:15 of the first off a cross-ice pass from Jussi Jokinen, with a big outside blast. The score came after Kyle Quincey was called for holding the stick at 2:37 as the Canes pressured goaltender Craig Anderson.
Ruutu followed at 5:49 for his second goal of the season, screening Anderson and getting a piece of Nic Wallin's wrister. The Canes were keeping the puck in the Avs' zone and getting scoring chances.
But the Avs shook off a sluggish start, found their legs and began to attack the offensive zone. After a pair of icings by the Canes, coach Paul Maurice used a timeout with 6:13 left in the first, but the Avs kept attacking.
O'Reilly scored on the backdoor with 3:45 left in the period, and Stastny then flashed in front of the goal and knocked a backhander past Cam Ward with 3:13 left in the period.
The Canes gave up two goals in 49 seconds Wednesday against the Islanders. ...
Cullen took a puck to the side of the face at the end of the team's pregame warmup at the Pepsi Center and skated quickly to the locker room.
Cullen was hit when a teammate's shot hit the outside of the post and the puck ricocheted toward him. Cullen, who wears a visor, was not injured. ...
With Tim Gleason out with an upper-body injury, the defensive pairings have Joe Corvo with Nic Wallin, Joni Pitkanen with Aaron Ward, and Andrew Alberts with Jay Harrison. ...

Aspirin
Sat, 10/24/2009 - 11:50 — wxray1I need an aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen. I'm not sure what to say. Except that i'm searching my basement for my panic button. It needs to be pressed.
One other point
Sat, 10/24/2009 - 11:15 — esteban1949I was looking at the standings thus far and here in the eastern conference are the point standings...but i'll be posting just the top point teams ...
Eastern div: Pitts. -18, NYR- 14,NJ.-10
Northeast: Buffalo & Ott.-11
Southeast: Wash. - 12, Atl.-9 ...and the Canes 6
my point is through out the NHL between 7-10 games have already been played...and the canes as well as other teams can't afford to allow this to go one and then come roaring back after the Olympics...the canes are already soar and bruised up already...can anyone imagine what the physical shape of the canes will be then ??
It scares me to even have said or thought such a thing...But I as a fan can just hope and have faith in the front office, the coaching staff and the players on the team to do the right thing and the best they can. 72 games left in the season...and sadly it don't look good...i hope i am not repeat NOT trying to sound all doom & gloom, but after watching the last 3 games especially and seen many chances for goals and wins slip by due to lack of one thing or another...well i can just imagine how some STH are feeling right about now...I do hope & pray that the Canes as a team will get the attitude of no mercy,no prisoners and no quarter...but only time will tell won't it ?? Thanks for letting me have my say. enjoy the afternoon with your families ...and lets hope the canes can and will out play the Wild tonight, as they have a worst record than the Canes do...and they too are looking for a major effort tonight as well !!
Go Canes !!
Staal
Sat, 10/24/2009 - 09:49 — rmmeliCan someone tell Staal that the wraparound shot is becoming somewhat predictable?
agreed...
Sat, 10/24/2009 - 10:40 — whirligigi'm starting to think the guys with letters (Staal, Brindy, Whitney) are what are keeping us from gelling as a team. For instance, if they don't have enough confidence to take a stand against crummy play (which they don't right now) then there is little solidarity.
OLDEST TEAM IN THE NHL
Sat, 10/24/2009 - 07:15 — greg_98I did hear tripp say last night that the canes are the oldest team in the nhl,{avg age of the players} he was commenting on the fact that the avalanche was the third youngest team, its still very early to say how the canes will finish up this year but it is certainly not the start we fans were hoping for.
Am i wrong ??
Sat, 10/24/2009 - 05:36 — esteban1949Is it me or am i imagining things here ? The last 3 games including last nights fiasco, the canes could & should have won. While the spurts of fore checking have been great, but not consistant. the spurts of crashing the net are good but not consistant. Staying out of the box at key times is good as the Cane's PK is improving...but again...not consistant. here are what i see are the consistancies on the plus side for the canes thus far:
1. the grit and heart of Walker,Corvo,LaRose, and Pitkanen
2. The speed of Ruutu,Harrison, and Mr. Kostopolis,Staal, Jokenin
3. The ability the Canes have to keep the puck deep in the opositions end of the ice.
4. And the fustration on the faces of A.Ward,Walin,Samsonov, and the coaching staff.
as all of the players for the canes are (for the most part) very seasoned professionals who have the ability to surgically cut apart any team wether they have fresher & younger legs or not, but somehow the reverse becomes a reality.
I guess I'm just open;ly saying what many are thinking...and if the Canes do not come out on the ice tonight with bllod in their eye,and an attutde of "it's win or we lose the cup" mentality.then sadly folks what we have been seeing will continue on long before the olympics ever get here. No i am NOT trying to sound the "death nell" here, but as it was said earlier, what has started outas a season with hope and promise, has become nothing but a cattle feed lot pool of muck and mire...And yes folks...the Rats lost last night too 2-1 but it wasn't in OT or a SO either
Go Canes !!
Yeah - I'm the Bad Guy
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 22:58 — WAStoutAccording to some of you. Whatev.
It's too bad we don't play the Leafs after the Wolves so we can OFFICIALLY be the worst team in the league.
This is becoming a joke - FAST.
Avs showed you J.R. what a couple of 19-20 year olds can do. Let's trade for some more relics.
They tried
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 22:52 — esteban1949but got too sloppy and the canes had 3 chances with 6 mins plus left and if they had slowed things down a hair, and made better tape to tape passes...the canes could have tied it up...and who knows maybe the canes could have won in OT...but alas...we'll never know...but they tried...and i think Chad LaRose finally got an assist. hmmm...As both He and walker tried sevral times to wack it in the Avs net.
Another Disappointing Result
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 22:50 — abramsdougFor a year with tremendous promise, the Hurricanes continue to find ways to lose. It is a talented team; but the performance at this point is not up to the team's ability.
this is getting ugly
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 21:30 — MrKnockoffgiving them up in pairs! yuck.
