UNC system officials say it's particularly difficult to decide on tuition hikes this year because the state's economic certainty makes it tough to know how the legislature will react.
As Jim Phillips, a member of the UNC system's Board of Governors told me this morning:
"People are more concerned about the economy than they have ever been in my adult lifetime. We don't know if this is short or long-term. I get completely mixed signals from the General Assembly. It leaves us to figure out, what our job is all the time, really, what is the right thing to do for the people of North Carolina."
The UNC system's board will likely decide on tuition and fee hikes next month.
