Tom Tancredo, the former Colorado congressman whose speaking engagement at UNC Chapel Hill Tuesday ended early and abruptly due to a protest, has issued a statement about the incident.
Tancredo, on campus to discuss his opposition to in-state tuition benefits for illegal immigrants, mocked the tolerance of the "open borders left."
Here's his entire statement, which he sent out today in an e-mail.
Dear Friend,
The open borders left once again proved just how "tolerant" they are yesterday when they rioted and shut down a speech I tried to give at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Riley Matheson, a former intern at Team America, and his group Youth for Western Civilization asked me to speak on the issue of in state tuition for illegal aliens. And the so called purveyors of tolerance and diversity showed just how open minded they are when it comes to diversity of opinions.
Hundreds of protesters yelled obscenities, tried to put a banner saying "No One is Illegal" in front of me. They even broke a window. The police used mace and threatened to use tasers, but no protesters were arrested or disciplined. There is no freedom of speech on hundreds of university campuses today for people who dare to dissent from the radical political agenda of the socialist left and the open borders agitators.
Bay and I are not deterred by these radicals and we're both going to be speaking on more campuses this week. We are also helping bring my friend Virgil Goode to UNC next week to make sure our message gets heard, and I plan to go back there again.

Thu, 04/23/2009 - 11:30 — IngersollOk, so I am a student here at UNC right now. Whoever it was that reported there were "Hundreds of students," got some bad information. Everyone I talked to who was there including friends and faculty said there were about t 40-50 people outside. And out of those, only some were yelling and being riotous. However, with all the hoopla before hand, why were there only about three police officers there in what they should have known would be a contentious situation?
Furthermore, what the students did was ridiculous, I could not believe how they acted when I heard. What can I say, out of every 28,000 people there are going to be around 50 crazy people especially on a college campus where people are all fired up to "change the world." However, every student that I have talked to about this (and I have talked to a lot, what can I say, I'm popular) feel the same shame that this has happened and hate that we are being judged by the actions of a few of us. And the Chancellor of UNC did apologize and actually sent us all a letter berating us for what happened.
So, in conclusion, a few students went WAY overboard, not ok. Almost all students here condemn their actions, very ok. Tancredo was wronged, but has exaggerated some (a very normal problem) and went slightly overboard.

I saw the video that the useful Tancredo idiot did of the talk. The only problem I saw was when Tancredo tried to rip down the banner held by two girls and couldn't do it. Riot? A laughable description. Profanity? The only profanity I heard in the video was some young woman using some very colorful language at the idiot that broke the window and got glass on her. Tancredo ran like a little girl. If he was truly interested in giving his talk, he could have. I suspect he was more than happy to use it as a money raising opportunity.
I saw and heard nobody in that room trying to shut him up. I saw people listening and then Tancredo escalate the situation when he didn't have to. A real man would've risen above the situation. Unfortuately there are no real men anymore.
My ultimate reaction to Tancredo's statement after watching that video is that Tancredo is not telling the truth, all in pursuit of money.
Real liberals are all for people like Tancredo to have his say. Real conservatives are the same. The fringe idiots from both sides are not. Don't make the mistake of confusing liberals and conservatives with the fringe elements. If you do you're wrong AND stupid.

What I am saying is that when you resort to the type of hostility that they brought to the arena, then you sometimes have to deal with the consequences. Which might be unintended for punks that think they are tough in a group setting, but would never try that stuff if their own safety was at risk.
The protestors rights end where Mr. Tancredo's right to deliver a speech in a safe environment to people who want to hear the message begin. Most liberals don't get that. Reminds me of the scene in Rocky 5, where the Don King like promoter creates the riot and then when Tommy Gunn gets finished of by Rocky, he's standing there taunting him saying, "Touch me and I'll sue."
When you do that you deserve to get thrashed. That is the angle I am coming from.
