Read Anoop Desai's UNC barbecue thesis

Bookmark and Share

You may have heard of Anoop Desai. He's a UNC Chapel Hill graduate student who's star is rising fast thanks to a series of appearances on TV's American Idol.

Before he hit the big-time, however, the Chapel Hill native was an honor's student as an undergraduate within UNC-CH's American Studies department. For an honor's thesis, he chose a topic near and dear to the hearts of North Carolinians: Barbecue.

The 60-page thesis, which you can read in its entirety by clicking on the attachment below — courtesy of Anoopdog.com, a fan site — is an analysis of the various types of southern barbecue and its influence on the culture of southerners.

One section examines Allen and Son, the legendary BBQ joint on N.C. 86 in Chapel Hill. He introduces restaurant owner Keith Allen like this:

"Keith Allen embodies the white working-class south. His silver hair speaks to the thirty nine years he's spent tending the pits at his Chapel Hill restaurant. Allen wakes each morning before 3 a.m. to chop oak logs behind Allen and Son along N.C. 86 between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.

His first words the morning of our interview were 'you do what you have to do and I'll do what I have to do.' The single-minded dedication that Allen shows to his work is deeply reminiscent of the hard work of black and white field hands throughout southern history."

Hey......nobody said you had

Hey......nobody said you had to be smart to go to Carolina. It helps to have a fairly decent SAT, but you almost have to be wealthy and aloof and your Daddy needs an extra Benz or Beemer at the house for your use , but the most significant bottom line is........ if you're an ultra liberal snob with your nose firmly planted in the stratosphere, and so in love with yourself that you're all giddy about it, you'll fit right in. If you're none of those, you'd damn well better me a McDonald's Al-American

In response to the comment

I was in the Honors program at UNC. This is horrible writing, plain and simple. Why so defensive?

A comment on the comments

For all the ignorant people who are criticizing this paper by Desai, why don't you write a 60 page master thesis yourself?

First all, the paper is not bad at all.  There are no grammatical mistakes.  It is coesive and comprehensive, and should not be eliciting such horrendous response.  How can anyone be ashamed by this paper?  It is an average paper ( I would give it B), and mind you, this is a 60 page paper (--writing one takes lot of focus).

Secondly, Affirmative action does not have any effect on Asians Americans (this includes people from the Indian subcontinent--if you don't already know).    Also, to bring up affirmative action is immensely ignorant and just proves the point that the comments being written are of extremely racist nature.  This is post-racial world and learn to see people beyond their color (acknowledge it but don't discriminate).

Finally,  racist reactions to Anoop's paper is again evidence by the "Al American" comment.  Desai is of Indian descent.  He is not Middle-eastern nor is he muslim (his last name is desai- a hindu last name).  To criticize a paper is okay but to make personal remarks on the person because of your racism just shows how idiotic some people are.

Time's up

A thesis on BBQ!?
Maybe it's time to get rid of affirmative action.

I love all your notes these

This is the Stupidest Thing I've Read Today

How horrible! What is Anoop, part of the realty-TV, fame-whoring class?

I am surprised I have such a visceral reaction to this piece. Good lord, then the comparison to field hands?

Dood, you may not realize this yet, but hard-work and dedication to craft (especially your own business) is a common theme among those that succeed.

Now, back to your dress rehearsal.

I'm ashamed this came from a graduate of my school.

Very helpful post thank you
